To wonder why shoppers are surprised at post-Brexit customs and duties?

Wherrsmaclickypen · 27/01/2021 16:18

Shoppers are apparently 'dismayed' 'shocked' and 'angry' to receive bills for import taxes and handling on their online shopping from the EU. It not just media reporting - there are lots of annoyed and confused comments on retail social media pages. Many are angry at the retailers for not posting UK specific warnings. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We have come out of the EU. What exactly did people think was going to happen?

PS If there are any pro-Brexit knitters out there, who enjoyed shopping at Hobbii, Ritohobby et al, you have brought this on yourself, and the rest of us.

Project Fear is Here.

Bloody pissed off though, it should be Brexiteers shouldering those costs, unfortunately that's unworkable though.

I reckon there’s a way. Brexiteers can apply for their new blue passports, like they wanted. When doing so they have to surrender their burgundy ones. Remainers get to keep their burgundy ones.

If you have a burgundy one you get to live and work in the EU. If you have a blue one, you don’t. And you have to join the long non-EU queue when you go on holiday, while the burgundy passport holders can breeze through in the quick EU one. If you have a blue one you have to pay customs charges. If you have a burgundy one you don’t. If you have a burgundy one you can sell your fish to the EU. If you have a blue one you can’t.

I wonder if 52% of the electorate would take up their new blue passports...

HerselfIndoors · 27/01/2021 20:53

I agree tilder. And I feel like a twat that even as a staunch remainer myself, I wasn’t fully aware of how disastrous it would be, and deludedly thought a deal would mitigate things.

I also don’t understand at all how anyone but a complete blithering idiot could want to end free movement. It’s a huge loss and I’m so angry about it.

SusannaSpider · 27/01/2021 20:54

@Lockdownlumpy

Well that's 15 mins of my life I won't get back. It seems you are right, I've read through it again and I can't find the part I thought I'd read before. Damn, that's annoying. Twice as annoying that Brexit is even impacting on goods coming from outside of the EU.

SusannaSpider · 27/01/2021 20:56

My burgundy passport had already had the EU removed before Brexit happened. I was none too impressed.

NiceGerbil · 27/01/2021 20:57

'
The thing is what we paid in was dwarfed by the benefits of being in the single market /custom union.'

Not to mention all the grants etc to, ironically, industries like farming, fishing...

HerselfIndoors · 27/01/2021 21:00

Love it Buddy :)

I have pondered that you should be able to apply for individual EU membership on the basis of being a remainer, but we should have thought of that when we were voting so we could record it.

SabrinaThwaite · 27/01/2021 21:03

I wonder if 52% 37% of the electorate would take up their new blue passports...

Fixed it for you Smile

Yeah but we have sovereignty & lots if fish now OP. Don't we???

Only a blithering idiot can't weigh up the pros and cons of both which there are many.
NiceGerbil · 27/01/2021 21:13

Both which things?

bp300 · 27/01/2021 21:15

@NiceGerbil

Both which things?
The pros and cons of continuing with or ending freedom of movement.
SabrinaThwaite · 27/01/2021 21:19

The pros and cons of continuing with or ending freedom of movement.

Ah, good.

At least bp300 is being honest that shafting the entire UK economy is worth it because “free movement”.

NiceGerbil · 27/01/2021 21:20

What are the pros of ending free movement?

HerselfIndoors · 27/01/2021 21:31

Well to conclude that I think free movement is a good thing, I did obviously consider the possible prod and cons. I thought about it, that’s how I know what I think.

Buddytheelf85 · 27/01/2021 21:31

The pros and cons of continuing with or ending freedom of movement.

Of course the Brexit vote has had no impact whatsoever on overall net migration figures, even though the number of EU immigrants to the UK has dropped to its lowest level in record. The government is just letting non-EU immigrants in instead because we need them. So I think it’s fair to say that anyone who voted to leave because they thought ending free movement would reduce overall immigration figures really was a blithering idiot.

bp300 · 27/01/2021 21:34

@NiceGerbil

There are too many to list. There are over 18000 criminals in the Uk from the EU. Hundreds of thousands of EU immigrants who are not net contributers. Strain on public services. Increased demand for housing. Etc.
HerselfIndoors · 27/01/2021 21:35

The only pro that I can see for brexiteers of ending free movement is if they don’t like immigration and think that it will prevent polish or Lithuanian etc people from moving to Britain to work.

But as we need people to come and work here, we will have to have them from somewhere, somehow. So it doesn’t end immigration. We’ll still have people coming to work here from other countries (which I am fine with) but we lose our freedom to move around The EU unhindered and work there/live there.

What are the many other pros?

Daphnise · 27/01/2021 21:35

If you insist on buying foreign stuff, then you'll have to pay!

And please stop moaning.

HerselfIndoors · 27/01/2021 21:37

bp300 but it’s a 2-way street. Our criminals could go there too, we could move to the EU and use there services, brits are famous for moving to Spain and France for example.

Theworldisfullofgs · 27/01/2021 21:40

Daphnise

Why? Is it annoying? I felt like that about eurosceptics.

18,000 EU criminals?

That’s an interesting figure.

Latest UK stats (March 2020) report that there are 4,144 EEA prisoners in England and Wales.

I’d be very surprised if NI and Scotland had locked up the remaining 14,000 or so.

Hopefully they do. Those countries can choose their own immigration policies. I don't know any British who have moved to Eastern Europe but millions have moved here.

The rest are convicted criminals living amongst us.
Theworldisfullofgs · 27/01/2021 21:48

We benefit from FoM. We have an older population and falling birth rate.

We benefitted massively through doctors coming here. It costs £163,000 to train a doctor and then more to get to consultant level. Add nurses, physios, care workers, the european banking community that used London as its base...
