To wonder why shoppers are surprised at post-Brexit customs and duties?

Wherrsmaclickypen · 27/01/2021 16:18

Shoppers are apparently 'dismayed' 'shocked' and 'angry' to receive bills for import taxes and handling on their online shopping from the EU. It not just media reporting - there are lots of annoyed and confused comments on retail social media pages. Many are angry at the retailers for not posting UK specific warnings. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We have come out of the EU. What exactly did people think was going to happen?

PS If there are any pro-Brexit knitters out there, who enjoyed shopping at Hobbii, Ritohobby et al, you have brought this on yourself, and the rest of us.

@Alwaysandforeverhere

So no different to Us or other imports then. Shame for those wanting to import cheap maybe we will have a bit less throw away culture.
Most of the high quality durable clothing which is the antithesis of the throwaway culture you mention comes from Europe. So it will now be considerably more expensive, and involve more paperwork and middlemen fees for UK citizens to purchase. Or for UK retailers to import and resell. So its not about 'cheap imports', but it is about accessibility and affordability of certain (desirable) markets.

Do anti-Brexiters get sexual pleasure out of these threads? Every time they turn into a wankfest of superiority.

anti-Brexiter are pissed off enough and struggling too much because of the consequences to find any pleasure in it.

Grow up, it's a bit more complicated than a "I told you so" when it impacts your life and finance.

bp300 · 27/01/2021 18:29

@Theworldisfullofgs

Do you actually know anyone who works in health. It's grim.

If we didn't have lock down sceptics or covid sceptics and we had less people going "me, give me what I want" we would be in a better position in terms of the economy.
It's the lack of decisive action fuelled by sceptics that has brought the economy to this position.

It sounds like your making excuses blaming other people for lockdowns which were clearly never going to work. The long term damage caused to the economy by locking down will never be recovered.
AethelsWhiteGoose · 27/01/2021 18:31

I don’t feel superior but I do feel sad that my in-laws can’t send any presents or Dutch goodies to their grandchildren in the UK.

It was mentioned but project fear you know....

Kendodd · 27/01/2021 18:31

@bp300

Myself and all the Brexiteers I know are all anti lockdown. Will the people who are pro lockdown compensate me the £100k I have lost due to the lockdowns? If so I will happily contribute towards brexit.
Right, so you're comparing the damage of lockdown to the damage of Brexit (apparently most economists think Brexit will be worse) and you voted for Brexit!

LastTrainEast · 27/01/2021 18:32

It always applied to imports apart from the EU so not sure why it's so shocking. I have an idea that would help. British people could... make things. We could grow things and build things and sell them to other British people (and other countries if they wanted)

I don't know why people thought it made sense to buy cotton reels from Portugal and string from Germany in the first place, but if it's not so easy now then that is good news.

I'm sure we would very gladly admit you were right if only we were relaxing in the sunlit uplands we were promised.

TheMethodicalMeerkat · 27/01/2021 18:37

Lots of people, leavers and remainers alike, didn’t/don’t really understand the intricacies of “Single Market” and “Customs Union”. And of course Boris went on tv on Christmas Eve and stated that there would be no non tariff barriers to trade. Bollox of course but between the general public’s lack of understanding of the issues, the lies spun for years and the deal only agreed with days to go, I’m not all that surprised so many people didn’t join the dots and realise they as individuals would be impacted too.

Does anyone know if it works the otherday? From UK to EU? Guess you'll still be charged?

Yes, and this is so damaging to UK businesses who export to Europe.

That figures.

Why am I not surprised!

And I think you're projecting.

I'm not commenting on your posts as it is derailing this thread and you haven't giving one argument except 'lockdowns don't work'. Where they have adhered to restrictions elsewhere, they are reopening and their economy is in better shape. Look at Asia. Collectivists societies have done better than our individualistic one.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2021 18:42

Difference between Brexiteers and everyone who isn't one, is that Brexiteers hate being wrong and everyone else would love to be wrong. Funny idea of a wankfest

bp300 · 27/01/2021 18:42

"Right, so you're comparing the damage of lockdown to the damage of Brexit (apparently most economists think Brexit will be worse) and you voted for Brexit!"

Remainers keep making the ridiculous request that that people who democratically voted for Brexit should be the only ones who pay economically for all aspects of it. I'm just making the point that it is as ridiculous as me asking the pro lockdown people to sell their assets to compensate the anti lockdown people for the money they've lost.

We've lost about £40k so far. More if I look at our pensions.

Haven't lost my parents though. Or the in laws, who are very vulnerable. I value my parents, anyone's parents, more than £40k.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 27/01/2021 18:53

exactly.

Rarely have I wished more that I was wrong.

Nobody voted for Covid. Bit of a difference.

You're forgetting that no one voted on whether we should lock down.

The last general election was supposed to give the Tories a mandate to 'get Brexit done'. They were voted in and did indeed 'get Brexit done'.

I give short shrift to any Brexiteers moaning about how the Tories have handled the pandemic. You voted for those idiots, so live with it.

Im glad to hear they are OK but they could stay in if they wish to and it would cost alot less that 40k to ensure everything they need is sent to the property .Personally I don't know anyone who has died of the virus but I have heard of multiple suicides of people in their 30s who's lives have been ruined by lockdown.

The trouble is... Brexit means Brexit.
We would have known about the tarrifs and taxes because we were told at the time.
We now don't want to accept it.

Our European neighbours seem to understand what it means. I sell overseas, I check they are aware before sending. They do. Funny how British people don't seem to be aware ?

We have a populist government who locked down because it was popular with 90% of the electorate. If 90% of the electorate wanted herd immunity then they would have proceeded with that which was the original plan so I believe my point stands.
QuentinInQuarantino · 27/01/2021 19:12

I'm on both a sewing group and also an expats in Spain group and coincidentally read the same story on both groups from the respective people involved. A UK mum had sewn her son a hoodie and sent it to him in Spain, he'd been charged €30 to get it.

It was handmade and a gift, so I can see why people might be surprised.

LApprentiSorcier · 27/01/2021 19:14

How do you know 90% of the electorate wanted lockdown. I wasn't asked - were you?

Wherrsmaclickypen · 27/01/2021 19:15

Bravo on almost managing to conflate the merits of lockdown with Danish wool tariffs 🙄
