To still have my Christmas tree up?

It’s just so nice to have some sparkle right now on these long cold nights.

There is some historical precedence re leaving it up till candlemass.....

Colleague thinks I’m ridiculous 😂

The real tree in our conservatory is gone, as are most of the decorations, but I have decided the tree in our living room is definitely staying till Candlemas. I'm enjoying having it up for longer, but I have removed all the Santa/angel type decorations and the baubles saying Merry Christmas, as those were starting to feel a bit anachronistic. Grin It now looks more like a winter tree - think icicle- and snowflake-shaped ornaments, that kind of thing.

Mad stuff.

Just keep the lights on and get rid of the tree lol. Shakes head.

Bit difficult with a pre-lit tree Grin

I've still got clear my window lights up. Trees is only down because my cat knocked it over and everything fell off.

MissMarpleDarling · 29/01/2021 01:25

Got my clear

Ponoka7 · 29/01/2021 01:39

My real one was on the point of falling down, but I've got other decorations still up. My artificial tree in the dining/kitchen is still up and I'm thinking of converting it to a Easter tree.

To still have my Christmas tree up?
WanderingMilly · 29/01/2021 01:44

I still have all my lights up and candles etc., but not the tree. I've seen trees still lit up in any number of houses though so I think people are leaving decorations to cheer themselves up. Doesn't do any harm.

Holothane · 29/01/2021 17:49

We both spotted lights in a garden outside just as it was getting dusk I’m buying my fairy lights next week for the bedroom even dh agreed it’s a great idea. He loved the lights in the garden.

Riapia · 29/01/2021 18:50

Candlemas day is traditional.
Some take theirs down on plough Monday 11 January, start of the agricultural year.

Brawsome · 29/01/2021 18:53

When you put it up again next Christmas won’t it just remind you of lockdown?

IDKNABYBIF22 · 29/01/2021 23:39

@Brawsome

No; I work outside the house from 7am - 7pm 5 or 6 days a week (in the NHS, back in my normal role with no redeployment like the first lockdown), so this doesn't feel like lockdown for me tbh. If I was working from home and seeing it all day I'm sure I'd be sick of the sight of it by now, but I quite like how cosy it makes my living room look in the evenings. Planning on leaving it up until the 6th of Feb, then will replace with something else fairy light related.

Brawsome · 30/01/2021 16:04

Fair enough! Quite like the idea of welcoming spring with some nice fresh lights myself. Embracing the inner pagan.

happymummy12345 · 30/01/2021 19:10

Not at all. I'm superstitious so usually mine only ever goes up the first weekend in December, and always comes down on the 6th January.
However due to circumstances this time I didn't actually get to finish the tree and turn it on until Christmas Day, I didn’t finish it properly so I was happy with it (doing the last move of lights, making sure it looks right and securing the leads to the table leg so they can't be seen. Tree has to go on a table because of the height of the window) until Boxing Day, and we, well I just hadn't had long enough to enjoy it and couldn’t take it down on the 6th. So I've left the tree up until Candlemas on the 2nd February. Not even sorry. (Everything else, cards, sons Father Christmas sign from the window, ornaments and decorations are all away though). Will start closing the shutters again when I feel we’ve subjected the neighbours to it enough).
I always miss it when I have to take it down, the room feels so empty and dark.

GCAcademic · 30/01/2021 19:14

Might as well just leave it up for next year now, OP.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 30/01/2021 19:16

Took mine down a week ago so YANBU, OP.

ImRealHonest · 30/01/2021 19:19

But... arent you desperate to get your house back? By 29/12 I’m always wanting normality and tidiness.

I have to move furniture around to fit a tree in, and I always want my living room back. If it wasn’t for that, I may not take it down.

Sheleg · 30/01/2021 19:20

Take it down, FFS! It's nearly February!

LOTM · 30/01/2021 19:21

Does it still have any needles left? Or is it just a Christmas stick now?

happymummy12345 · 30/01/2021 20:24

I'm not sure if the "take it down" and "...is it just a stick now" comments are aimed at me or the op. Sorry if not me.
But if so my tree is artificial so it's exactly the same as it was.
And I will take it down on Tuesday 2nd February. As I said it's usually up first weekend of December and down 6th January. But since it wasn't properly finished the way I wanted until Boxing Day last year, I decided to leave it up because I hadn't had enough time to enjoy it. 2 weeks wasn't enough.
And last year some people put them up the beginning of November so how is it any different? If it can be up all November and no one minded why can't it stay up all January? Month before or month after? Exactly the same IMO.

Ginsodden · 01/02/2021 14:19

And the tree is down! I replaced it with some lovely dragonfly fairy lights and kept my mantel shelf arrangement, so still have some sparkle!

I thought it had held up remarkably well in terms of needle shedding, however I ended up shin deep in needles whilst taking it down. Good job I didn’t sneeze on it or anything!

Glad to have found like minded bonkers-ness on this thread though 😂

Good job you remembered Candlemass is tomorrow @Ginsodden !!

FinallyFluid · 01/02/2021 22:51

I was desperate to keep mine, but it was becoming a parody of itself.

So on Sunday, when I was feeling brave, I started to take the lights off, so then we had to follow through, the room now looks.........well normal... and a tad boring.

Mudmudingloriousmud · 01/02/2021 22:54

Mine is up, definitely getting brighter outside so I'm thinking of taking house Dec's down this week and maybe the tree!!

FinallyFluid · 01/02/2021 22:58

Question...................

Was there any correlation between price paid and longevity of the tree ?

I will go first we paid £100 for the tree and it was fine, fine tree until about last week.

anomletteandaglassofwine · 01/02/2021 23:00

We took ours down today. I miss the sparkle, but the sittingroom looks huge!
