Inspired by the white bag thread, it just got me curious. I’m not a journo! Although, I suppose that’s what a journalist would say.. Grin

Have you / do you take drugs? What did you take and why did you?

I’ll be honest and go first, I occassinally use MDMA and I do use coke on nights. But I don’t have kids and I’d stop as soon as I was having them

Sadly, no. When I went to university the first thing they did was warn you that people would be offering you drugs and you should be very careful. Didn't see or be offered any in three fucking years - I was obviously hanging around with the wrong crowd.

Since then, I've known a couple of weed smokers, but they never offered me it and I never asked. Plus there's my crackhead neighbours, but I avoid contact with them at all costs.

JudgeRindersMinder · 26/01/2021 09:09

@VienneseWhirligig

Accidentally smoked half a joint once (was completely blotto and mistook it for a roll up). I was so ill for the next two days that even the smell now makes me queasy. Nothing else, too chicken.
This was me too-was actually glad as it killed off any curiosity and made me stay right away
TheOneLeggedJockey · 26/01/2021 09:18

I worked my way through all the dance music associated drugs in my 20s, mostly pills and cocaine.

I tried mushrooms in Amsterdam and had a terrible experience.

I admit, I thoroughly enjoyed those few misspent years and had some unforgettable nights.

DH and I did it once or twice after we got together, but haven’t since we had kids.

Was very much recreational, and while I don’t regret it at all, I am a lot more aware of the drug trade, and it’s for that reason, along with being a parent and being in a job I take seriously that means I’ve well and truly moved on from that.

No mental health issues at all, even if my usage back then was ‘grabbing some serotonin’ each time!

IamTomHanks · 26/01/2021 09:18

Plenty of weed & hash. Can't wait to go home to Canada in the summer and buy a great big brownie. Grin

An ecstasy pill once, but I have ADHD so that wasn't as fun as it should have been. Never had a desire to do Coke or anything Hallucinogenic.

squeekums · 26/01/2021 11:20

Yes ive tried many many things, some great nights out, zero regrets

Why did I take them

Because they are fucking amazing. The feeling you get on MDMA is like nothing on earth for me. The total feeling of peace, euphoria and oneness with everything is just indescribable.

this describes it for me, i completely get what @Uncomfortablynumbed means

Depends on the drug but....

Your feelings of 'peace, euphoria and oneness with everything' is just peachy but is it worth the devastating consequences of the drug trade.
(I know some drugs are worse than others). Are those moments of euphoria really worth the misery and exploration of so many other people.
How can you reconcile your personal pleasure over ruining other people lives.
Do you just not care, do you just think it doesn't make a difference or do you not believe that it's true? I find it hard to understand peoples mindset on this.

To be honest the only 'excuse' for using (some ) drugs has to be that you literally don't care about the consequences on other people. At least that's an honest answer.

BTW I have a close family member who was convicted of being a drug dealer - he didn't see any issue with it. 🙄

Psychoactive drugs are powerful things, they can be amazingly enjoyable and they can be terrible.
We could make some of the terrible parts go away if we legalized and regulated drugs- I acknowledge that this is not a straightforward or easy thing to achieve.
I hope that in the future we come up with safe and regulated ways to explore the therapeutic properties of recreational/psychoactive drugs, imo they have much to offer humanity🌏🌎🌍

as you have pointed out most of the problems that come with drugs are caused by the fact that they are illegal, thank you for putting forward the argument for legalization of drugs 🙏

MustardMitt · 26/01/2021 11:51

I’ve smoked weed and done coke in my time but not for maybe 15-18 years.

I have to admit, I quite fancy a joint.

GeidiPrimes · 26/01/2021 11:52

Interesting fact - before drugs legislation happened in the 70s, there were about 500 registered addicts in the UK. 50 years after the 'war on drugs began we now have 10,000+.

GeidiPrimes · 26/01/2021 11:58

Got that 2nd figure wrong, more like 200,000

rainbowdashsneeze · 26/01/2021 12:01

Yes, I started using drugs at a very early age. I used ecstasy MDMA GHB cocaine and amphetamines and even dabbled in smoking crack cocaine as a teenager I've also smoked cannabis as my step father used to grow it in the house I have also abused pharacueticals throughout my life. I have children and on occasion when they have gone on holiday with their dad I have had a dabble. It was a coping strategy from an abusive childhood and I suppose it's something I may always go back too when in times of crisis. I am a professional and very good at my Job and I make decisions about people's lives that have had similar experiences to myself. I don't judge anyone!

rainbowdashsneeze · 26/01/2021 12:01

Forgot to mention MKat and LSD!

DedlyMedally · 26/01/2021 12:06

I use weed with a similar frequency to people who use alcohol. I don't really drink though. Alcohol always makes me feel really lethargic the following day.

I've used MDMA a couple of times and it was great, I may even do it again, but it's not worth the next few days whilst I have things to do.

I've tried mushrooms/truffles and LSD a few times. I credit am experience with too much mushrooms for kicking me out of chronic depression that affected me from basically as early as I can remember to my mid-20s. I had serious plans to off myself at 30 (or beforehand if I didn't feel I could make it) and after that trip I couldn't really relate to those feelings.

I wouldn't really reccomend it outside of a clinical setting though. It could just as easily have gone in the other direction.

iklboo · 26/01/2021 12:09

No. Never even had so much as a drag of a cigarette either.

Lillygolightly · 26/01/2021 12:19

Have always been terrified of drugs, especially after the Leah Betts case many many years ago. I even hate being too drunk, I don’t mind being a bit tipsy but hate drunk. I used to smoke cigarettes, but not smoked in years now.

I remember after an operation being prescribed a high strength codine and absolutely hated how spaced it made me feel. I took it once, the first dose and never took it again after that and just put up with the pain as it was preferable to the side effects of the codine.

Gas and air during Labour was amazing though, after my first birth I positively looked forward to the use of gas and air in my subsequent births.

HippoOnMyRoofEatingCake · 26/01/2021 12:23

The narrative that alcohol is ok and illegal drugs are somehow inherently more dangerous or antisocial is really deeply ingrained... It's kind of impressive if you think about it.

Like, logically everyone knows they're the same thing, almost nobody disagrees when you point it out, but you still have grown adults downing a bottle of wine every Saturday night while admitting they're "terrified of drugs". And threads full of people proclaiming that by some miracle, they manage to have a family and a professional job despite sometimes taking illegal drugs, as if that should be some kind of revelation.

Amazing.

FunkBus · 26/01/2021 12:24

I've taken more or less everything at one time or another. I used to take MDMA pretty regularly and I loved it, I do kind of miss it now.

I had a lot of mh issues and anything to escape the pain was ok by me. Now on medication so don't feel the need to even drink really, I feel pretty much ok most of the time. I probably wouldn't take anything again, but I definitely wouldn't touch cocaine again, the industry is too grotty.

HippoOnMyRoofEatingCake · 26/01/2021 12:25

Like this whole Leah Betts thing. Imagine if we could use just one story about one young person dying from alcohol consumption (and there are obviously MANY to choose from) to put half a generation off ever even trying alcohol! That would really be something.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 26/01/2021 12:27

I'm really not interested in drugs but have tried truffles from amsterdam on 2 occasions to enhance spiritual practice during ritual but tbh although it wasn't unpleasant it didn't particularly enhance my meditation.

cherrypop86 · 26/01/2021 12:30

No but I had a mild addiction to prescription painkillers and still have some issues. I've never taken anything recreational and not even had weed.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 26/01/2021 12:32

You're so right. In the space of about four months I knew of two young men who died by choking on their own vomit during the night. It's devastatingly easy to drink to fatal levels, especially for young guys who like to show off in front of their mates.
PatsyStone39 · 26/01/2021 12:32

No. Smoked hash a bit when I was a stupid teen. I don't drink now either and I literally have to be dying to take a paracetamol. I even had my DS naturally. None of it stems from sanctimony btw, just the fact i am the unluckiest bastard on the earth and i avoid anything that could possibly kill you. Because i'm the one it'll happen to! Grin

zukiecat · 26/01/2021 12:32

No, never taken any drugs, I've never smoked, and I don't drink either.

Just never had any desire to do any of those things.

Lol, it was an argument not to use drugs as you know. If you use drugs (certain drugs) you have blood on you hands and you know it. If you are ok with that then that’s your call but to try and argue any differently is pathetic. It’s shows you have no morals at all and care more about yourself than all the people who die and suffer because of the drug trade.

It’s the hypocrisy that gets me. At least the seriously screwed up druggies generally don’t claim to care about anything other than getting their next fix.

Depends on which drugs obviously. Not all drugs are equal. There are good arguments for legalizing certain drugs but as the situation is now if you use certain drugs you are clearly extremely cold hearted.
