Inspired by the white bag thread, it just got me curious. I’m not a journo! Although, I suppose that’s what a journalist would say.. Grin

Have you / do you take drugs? What did you take and why did you?

I’ll be honest and go first, I occassinally use MDMA and I do use coke on nights. But I don’t have kids and I’d stop as soon as I was having them

No.

Rosebel · 25/01/2021 23:57

No, I watched my brother destroy his life on drugs so never wanted to try any. He's been clean 15 years and his body is still fucked.

TeachesOfPeaches · 25/01/2021 23:59

Used to use MDMA as a teenager and utterly adored it. Never got into coke and never liked weed.

meeeeh · 26/01/2021 00:05

I took MDMA and cocaine recreationally and regularly (couple times a month) in my 20s. Now I'm 32, a mother and teetotal. I'd say alcohol was probably one of the most dangerous drugs for me where I'd be the most out of control.

Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 26/01/2021 00:06

@unmarkedbythat

My friend is a NHS mental health nurse and she said every time a person takes drugs, the drug grabs a bit of serotonin from your brain that you can never get back.

Argh... there are very good reasons to listen to MH professionals warnings about recreational drug use but that sort of non fact is unhelpful.

Why don't you think that is true?
wirldsgonemad · 26/01/2021 00:07

I'm in my forties now and haven't had anything for over 20 years but in my late teens I was wild and tried ecstasy, Coke, speed, cannabis, acid etc. I even had crack once. Lots of partying for a couple of years but then I grew up (at 20) and really focused on studying then work, then family etc.

PoleToPole · 26/01/2021 00:10

BiBabbles sorry just seen your comment to me. I feel the term "recreational" downplays the effects and consequences, and normalises it in a way. Illegal drugs would be better, and more accurate. Taking illegal drugs should not be seen as a pastime.

I am so, so sick of seeing things done to women (and occasionally men, though I mostly treat women) without their genuine, informed consent, and drugs play such a huge part in that. As does alcohol.

Its on this thread too, the "bet you were fun as a teenager" Hmm. Ffs, dont teens and young adults have enough pressure on them without thinking they will be ostracized or a killjoy if they dont take illegal drugs? Without supporting an awful oppressive industry? Can we not just stop this bullshit of you are boring if you don`t take drugs?

Yohoheaveho · 26/01/2021 00:13

Perhaps what the nurse really meant was something like
'some psychoactive substances may cause negative changes to neurotransmitters and/or receptors in the brain'🤔

It's a well known fact. There's a huge body of evidence demonstrating permanent brain changes with many types of drugs, including with recreational use. You must know about the strong link between cannabis and psychosis?

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 26/01/2021 00:19

No , never wanted to , seen the horrendous effects on babies withdrawing !

Josette77 · 26/01/2021 00:20

I'm in Canada. I love weed. I don't drink but I take edibles on Saturday night.

ShrikeAttack · 26/01/2021 00:21

That's very true @GeidiPrimes, I've taken opium, heroin and prescription opiates, (years ago, from curiosity and because they were there), and none of them had any appeal to me, I think because I wasn't in physical or emotional pain in any way. They had no job to do really, and therefore no long-term or repeated use appeal to me.

Likewise cocaine, it's a very brittle drug, it gives a confidence, where it may be lacking, but it's unfeeling, very self-centered. If somebody has felt very diminished in their own life and never able to centre themselves I can see that taking it may be the answer to all their problems (temporarily obviously).

I don't think drugs are an immediate road to addiction and horror. For the majority of people drugs are an enjoyable but brief flirtation. For some, use of high THC weed strains can be calamitous mentally, others may become addicted to opiates or crack/cocaine or prescription benzos.

The problem doesn't really lie with drugs, more society and how drugs are used by people who have been damaged by the society in which they live.

I should try and switch to edibles I currently vape which is better than smoking but even so.... you're able to make it work for you then I guess 🤔

Oh absolutely, I have always felt like this, never mind the 'war on drugs' we need to focus on the why people need so much anaesthetic!!
However I don't think its always and only about dealing with pain, it can also be be just curiosity, hedonism, exploring the mind exploring your own thoughts connecting with people, all sorts of things.

GeidiPrimes · 26/01/2021 00:29

Why don't you think that is true?

I've never heard this either, and I learned a bit about the chemistry of drugs and addiction on the brain in rehab. Habitual drug use does screw your pleasure centres up though due to overload, but these can be relearned once abstinent. The brain is very good at forging new neural pathways.

Byeckythump · 26/01/2021 00:31

I took a lot of ecstasy and quite a bit of coke/speed on the dance music scene between 17 and 23. Loved it, had some truly amazing nights. Then left Uni, got a proper job and moved in with a mainstream boyfriend and that era naturally ended.

Never touched cannabis after a family member went psychotic on it. Not sure why I thought the drugs I used were any less bad, even less so now I know more about the drug trade. I was terrified of mushrooms and LSD but would happily take a pill bought off some random on the dance floor Hmm.

Now I drink peppermint tea on a Saturday night and a baileys or two at Christmas!

ShrikeAttack · 26/01/2021 00:32

Why ruin some errant nonsense with the truth!

I'm not 'pro' drugs, I'm ambivalent, I do know quite a few people who microdose with mushrooms or LSD that have found a really positive effect on their mental health.

Opiates are amazingly helpful in pain regulation.

Amphetamines are used for treatment of ADHD.

Benzos are very useful for anxiety.

Cannabis has many therapeutic uses.

It's not binary. Bad. Good. It's a very nuanced argument.

Harm.

Benefit.

CounsellorTroi · 26/01/2021 00:37

Nothing illegal. Never smoked. Drink in moderation.

ShrikeAttack · 26/01/2021 00:38

Well yes @Yohoheaveho! If you read my previous post I'm very interested in the effect of drugs on my own psyche, I've had some very informative and interesting experiences on psychedelics and still use them occasionally in considered circumstances.

(And also had much joy using MDMA, and never had a comedown, never!).

RootyT00t · 26/01/2021 00:39

Never

IDKNABYBIF22 · 26/01/2021 00:51

I've tried one cigarette, one cigar, and one spliff. Didn't like any of them. Never tried any other drugs; when I was at school years ago Leah Betts (died on her 18th birthday after taking ecstasy and drinking too much water) dad came in to give us a talk, and it put me off trying anything. Plus none of my friends ever really experimented, so no peer pressure. I used to go clubbing a lot and probably looked like I was on something to the bar staff as I would just drink water after I'd had 3 alcoholic drinks; hate hangovers and dancing is thirsty work!

MrsMarrio · 26/01/2021 00:54

No, completely anti drug here, never tried and never would, same with DH. Never seen the point in it and seen close family member destroy themselves through drink and drugs (I'm tea-total too)

I do like a drink but Leah put me off drugs forever.

NC for obvs reasons Grin
I smoke weed most weekends. I work full time and have for 20+ years. I love the stuff and view it as no different to a glass of wine. It totally chills me out and anything I’ve felt anxious about is a distant thought. I also suffer from insomnia and it really helps me to sleep.
I don’t drink or smoke cigarettes and have never done any other type of drug.

Royalty2k · 26/01/2021 01:19

I smoked some weed once & it made me so paranoid. I thought someone was in the house trying to kill me. Never again!
