Inspired by the white bag thread, it just got me curious. I’m not a journo! Although, I suppose that’s what a journalist would say.. Grin

Have you / do you take drugs? What did you take and why did you?

I’ll be honest and go first, I occassinally use MDMA and I do use coke on nights. But I don’t have kids and I’d stop as soon as I was having them

Back in the nineties, yes. I was a massive pothead for about five years, and have tried ecstasy, speed, coke, mushrooms and acid in my time. Mostly ecstasy and speed whilst clubbing. I was never a regular user of hallucinogenics as they didn’t suit me.

Most of my friends were the same, and I probably gave up class As a bit sooner than most of them, several still do coke in their 40s and 50s. I don’t judge, but it’s not for me now I’m a parent.

I was never a big drinker, too much alcoholism in my family and gave up nicotine fifteen years ago.

I don’t regret any of it, and it hasn’t negatively affected my life in any way, so I guess I’m lucky.

alexdgr8 · 25/01/2021 22:58

no, never have and never would.

alexdgr8 · 25/01/2021 22:59

never tobacco either, and no alcohol since age 16.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 25/01/2021 23:01

Had a very strong (didn't realise how strong) hash brownie at a uni party, thankfully a house party where I lived as I had to take myself upstairs as I felt rough. I'd had the odd drag of a joint passed round uni parties before but this was not like that. Thankfully my boyfriend at the time looked after me.

When I say rough, I was dizzy, feeling sick and out of it, and thinking the bands on my posters were coming out of the posters which was freaking me out more than anything. I managed to lie down for a bit then sat bolt upright and projectile vomited like in The Exorcist.

I was rough as arseholes the next day. Put me off doing anything like that again!

One thing I find strange about MN is that so many people insist that taking drugs is just fun, no big deal - yet on threads about, say, cocaine addicts, posters insist that addicts are victims who probably only tried drugs because their lives are traumatic. Which is it? Confused

Norwayreally · 25/01/2021 23:03

Tried cannabis a couple of times when I was a teenager but it never really made sense to me, it just made me fall asleep so I never understood the hype. Haven’t tried anything else.

Calmandmeasured1 · 25/01/2021 23:03

Never taken any drugs.

RickOShay · 25/01/2021 23:03

Used to. Nothing for years now though.
I got the paranoia fairly early on with weed, but did take ecstasy and speed at raves,

Impatientwino · 25/01/2021 23:05

The odd bit of cannabis in my 18-21ish student days, Marlboro lights in my early twenties and now just too much wine/gin.

I remember being in a nightclub toilet (20 odd years ago) and two girls were crouched over the sink next to me snorting a line of what I assume was cocaine and one of them just shrieked and as she lifted her head up blood splattered up the back of the sink and the mirror! She absolutely freaked and blood went everywhere! Don't think I've ever moved as quickly!

Goodness knows what she had snorted but that was enough to put me off trying anything!

Impatientwino · 25/01/2021 23:07

Oh I do remember taking proplus before going to a few all night clubs!

Chalkcheese · 25/01/2021 23:08

I did a lot of drugs when I was younger. I'm not going to pretend it didn't fuck me up a lot and it's taken me all the years since to try and get my life and mental health back together. I have a very addictive personality. I had some great times especially on MDMA/E but I would happily have traded them for a slow steady peaceful happiness with no crashing depressions or dreadful rock bottoms

You could say the same thing about some people just drinking alcohol for fun / socially and it’s no big deal, whereas if someone is an alcoholic it’s very sad and unfortunate. It depends on the person and the circumstance.

I speak as someone who did have an addiction problem but I can still appreciate I’ve had friends who did drugs just for fun.

Chalkcheese · 25/01/2021 23:09

I also count alcohol as a drug, so I don't drink either. I've not lapsed with drugs, but I have with alcohol on occasion. Not for a while now though. I think alcohol is the worst drug of all really.

wewillmeetagain · 25/01/2021 23:16

I'd say the only drugs I've never taken are heroin and crack. Weed made me mentally ill and things like cocaine and speed are all fun and games until you get the horrific come downs. I'm allergic to mdma/ecstasy it makes me violently sick. However I have to say that LSD was such fun, I literally laughed for 8 hours! I don't touch anything now and very rarely even drink alcohol.

MrsBobDylan · 25/01/2021 23:25

Everything except heroin. I am now as clean as a fucking whistle. No nothing, even alcohol got slung out by my mid 30s.

You'll be astonished to hear I can't do moderation. These days I put all my obsessive energies into learning geeky shit via YouTube. Sorted Grin

Choccorocco · 25/01/2021 23:25

Yes had an absolutely brilliant time in my 20s and 30s out clubbing with a brilliant gang of mates taking ecstasy, coke, occasionally speed. Never liked spliff much. Eventually grew out of it when the responsibilities of more senior job positions meant I needed to be able to function properly on a Monday. Would still say yes if it was offered, occasionally. Feel very lucky indeed to have been part of that culture at that time, before camera phones etc. Would be a nightmare now, with photos of people getting spangled.
Agree with pp that mdma had a very positive effect in terms or overcoming lots of anxieties. Being part of that loving, welcoming, clubbing community was amazing. Happy days!

LimitIsUp · 25/01/2021 23:30

I think most people should have answered yes since alcohol is a drug, albeit a socially acceptable one

My OH likes a whisky cos he likes the taste and the fuzzy feeling of a couple of drinks. My uncle drinks because he had a bad car accident and he has PTSD and he feels like the alcohol helps.

I use drugs occasionally because it's fun and I enjoy the feeling. My friend uses drugs because he had a traumatic upbringing and he likes the feeling of oblivion when he takes a lot.

Both scenarios can be true.

StudentProblems · 25/01/2021 23:36

Yes, but no longer. No kids though.

Disneymum1993 · 25/01/2021 23:46

Pretty much tried most things except heroin and crack. From age of 13/14 experimented with lots including legal highs mkat and salvia which were lethal you were high for days with them!
Had some great times in my teenage years but know a few people who died when we were young due to ecstasy tabs and drugs being cut with stuff.
Scary to think in 7 years time my oldest will be the age I was when I started to experiment !

Now at nearly 30 and with having kids it doesn't interest me in slightest been there done that and wore the T-shirt.

I'm rather boring now .

ShrikeAttack · 25/01/2021 23:48

Pretty much everything, I came of party age in the late 80's when things were kicking off. I've always been fascinated by the human desire to take drugs and alter perception. I don't think there's many drugs I haven't tried. I'm in my late 40s now and haven't really bothered for years, I do occasionally take hallucinogens and psychedelics, I think if you're solid mentally and are interested in the human mind they can be very instructive. It's not for everyone though.

I'm very pro-legislation. People are always going to use drugs, I'd rather that was divorced from criminality. I guess drugs are very much like alcohol (although more multitudinous in their effects), the majority of people will be able to use them without issue. It can become a problem for some, usually connected to past trauma.

Drugs aren't inherently bad. The illegal drug industry is absolutely bad.

OwlBeThere · 25/01/2021 23:51

Plenty back in my younger days, E, speed, lots of weed, drinking, poppers, acid. But nothing more than the odd joint and drink since I had my kids and now I don’t even drink. No reason why I did other than curiosity, and no reason why I stopped other than it just not being my thing anymore.

crazyontheweekend · 25/01/2021 23:53

Well I grew up in the hedonistic 90s so did quite a lot of Speed and E at raves from about age 16-20.
Everyone was doing it. Very few of my peers weren’t.
It was all very Madchester/Acid House.
Dabbled a bit in weed, coke and lsd too.
In my 40s now with 2 degrees, a career, a mortgage, a husband and DC and don’t drink or smoke now. In fact my body is an organic, plant based yoga temple now Grin

ShrikeAttack · 25/01/2021 23:53

Disney salvia divinorum doesn't keep you 'high' for days! It's a very intense, but short trip, that lasts about five minutes!

GeidiPrimes · 25/01/2021 23:54

Addiction is nearly always a response to trauma/poor mental health, an attempt to fill an emotional void. Recreational users who can pick up and put down at will don't have that obsessive relationship with the drug that the addict has. Just like some people can use alcohol with no problems but others become alcoholics.
