Drugs. Be honest..

Inspired by the white bag thread, it just got me curious. I’m not a journo! Although, I suppose that’s what a journalist would say.. Grin

Have you / do you take drugs? What did you take and why did you?

I’ll be honest and go first, I occassinally use MDMA and I do use coke on nights. But I don’t have kids and I’d stop as soon as I was having them

I smoked weed & skunk quite a few times & enjoyed it... because I've got an addictive personality type plus I get paranoid too easily I chose not to make a habit out of it.

However I did binge drink far too much & began to lose my memory after nights out; then age 36 I had my last drink due to being prescribed anti psychotics for my MH illness.
I've been teetotal for 8 years & I missed alcohol for ages as it had given me confidence. But I think I would be an alcoholic by now if I hadn't been forced to stop drinking.

I really dislike the use of Cocaine. Mainly because of the deaths & misery caused in South America & other places.
I can always tell when someone is coked up.
Working in a hospital I've known young & older people have strokes & heart attacks caused by coke. No one talks about it, but basically, there's nothing glamorous about the stroke rehab ward!!

Jonnywishbone · 25/01/2021 20:42

Weed and mushrooms, ecstasy a couple of times until I was 22 got a job and that was life. Regard anyone who takes them as a bit of a loser these days.

The best I have ever felt is when running in the country or doing weights in the gym.

Friedmushroom · 25/01/2021 20:42

Very rare I do any now but I’ve definitely done my fair share and, mostly, loved it! Daily weed user for around 10 years, magic mushrooms - back when you used to be able to buy them in Head shops, E on nights out/festivals, and LSD occasionally.

Most people in my circle do and have used. I’ve pretty much got it out of my system but still would at festivals etc. I’m shocked at how many here don’t or haven’t - had to laugh at the “do you have dodgy neighbours?” assumption on the drug letterbox thread. The most intelligent, successful people I know are the most hedonistic.

EileenGC · 25/01/2021 20:42

Never have, never will.
I've never tried alcohol either though, so I guess I'd have to start with that if I were to have any.

flangeface · 25/01/2021 20:42

I took a lot of party drugs like ecstasy and MDMA when I was in my late teens and early 20s. I had loads of hedonistic fun with my friends and went to lots of parties and festivals. Met some amazing open minded people and have no regrets.

Did coke a bit in my 20s and really disliked the way it made me feel and in general really dislike it.

I don't do any now as I have a family. I don't view weed in the same way, it works wonders on my anxiety and I think it should be legal.

PeanuttButtaCup · 25/01/2021 20:42

Never touched anything, I do drink occasionally. I’ve just never really been interested.

Bence69 · 25/01/2021 20:43

@whoamongstus

Coke, some MDMA very occasionally. Not often - I probably have a handful of big nights a year. I don't have kids, I don't think I'd carry on if I did. I do drink but very rarely.

I'm another one who's surprised by all the posters saying they don't know anyone who takes drugs etc etc. I move in reasonably naice circles and have a professional job and it's not unusual at all.

Amazed at the about of people too who say they have never touched it.
WaxOnFeckOff · 25/01/2021 20:43

In my 50s and never, alcohol was always enough. DSs are 20 and 19 and have said that they haven't either. DS2 had a puff of weed but didn't like it. He's away at Uni and could be doing anything but he is very honest and said to me that he'd thought about it and been offered stuff but turned it down. Got drunk aplenty though and propositioned by an older woman as well. DS1 barely leaves the house and hasn't been out in clubs and pubs etc, he says he hasn't tried anything, I think he is being honest also but isn't as candid as his brother.

Dh used to be a mental health nurse and has seen the issues that drugs cause so I think has had lots of chats with DC.

Christmasfairy2020 · 25/01/2021 20:44

No never. What job do you do to waste so much money

whoamongstus · 25/01/2021 20:45

@dingoesatemybaby

Once. Years ago at a music festival.

MDMA, cocaine and speed.

The comedown was the worst thing I've ever experienced.

Never again.

Christ that's a hell of a lot to smash in all at once for your first time taking drugs, no wonder the comedown was horrendous!
PoleToPole · 25/01/2021 20:45

No, I never have and I absolutely never would.

I`m an HCP, and due to the nature of my field I see a lot of female drug users (both "recreational" Hmm and sex workers), seeing the effects day in day out is enough to convince me.

Not just the physical effects of the drugs, but what is inflicted on them when they are in that condition and cannot genuinely consent, or when their inhibitions are lowered, or when their reasoning is impaired and they are coerced Sad.

VetiverAndLavender · 25/01/2021 20:46

Oh, and I'm early 40s. Never smoked, never drink. (I don't eat as healthily or exercise as I should, though.)

Growing up, I saw how people act when they drink. Not terrible violence, not even falling-down and vomiting from excessive drinking, but just enough to make me decide that I didn't want that for myself. I took care to marry a man who also doesn't drink, smoke, etc. and have never regretted that decision.

madmara · 25/01/2021 20:47

No, never took anything other than alcohol, not even a puff of a joint.

I came of age around the time that Leah Betts died and her hospital photo did more to keep me and my friends away from drugs than any lecture from teachers.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 25/01/2021 20:47

No - never. Never smoked a cigarette either. Haven’t drunk alcohol in the last few years - I had two non sleeping kids and alcohol messed up my sleep and I preferred sleep to anything at that point. They sleep fine now but I’ve kind down of got out of the habit.

I was given codeine in early labour and it terrified me. It was the one time I thought I couldn’t cope - I think I really don’t like loss of control.

Sugar, on the other hand, really is my drug of choice. I’m fine until I start but three squares of dairy milk and then I really am an addict seeking a fix.

merryhouse · 25/01/2021 20:49

Caffeine from the age of 13 (self-medicating migraines)

Alcohol in varying amounts from about 12 (eighth-share of a bottle of Woodpecker) through twenties (five pints of Broadside) still going about 8 units a week in my 50s.

Cadged a puff off someone else's tobacco a few times in my early 20s (only got the urge when tipsy and in smoking company).

On the illegal side: can't remember what, it's one you can take grated into a cup of coffee (small party, everyone else had paired up). I was already more than half-cut from cab sauv and didn't notice any effect whatsoever.

I wouldn't have known where to get hold of any to be honest. People used to say that if you sat in Vanbrugh bar for long enough you'd get offered drugs; but I was there several times a week for four years and never got so much as a hint of anything. Nowadays I have absolutely no idea.

You don't need to feel sorry for us. We have plenty of fun.

Howmercurialislife · 25/01/2021 20:49

@christmasfairy2020 I was fortunate enough to hold down good jobs and was earning over 30k by the time I was 19 (I left school at 16 and worked my way up, mid 40s now). Had no dependants and a lot of spare cash

MaeveDidIt · 25/01/2021 20:50

@Trivialpursuitofhappiness
Why isn't just being yourself enough?

I've never done it because it's potentially a very rocky road to start going down.

MingeOnFire · 25/01/2021 20:52

Smoked lots of joints from around 14 to mid 20s and lived with a cannabis addict for around 10 years. Didn't enjoy it that much, but it temporarily helped remove me from an unpleasant reality. Later I lived with someone else who vaporised weed for pain relief so no tobacco mixed in. I liked this more and had some awesome sex after smoking it. I still use it occasionally if I get a migraine as it's brilliant for removing me from the pain and letting me sleep.

Lots and lots of speed in late teens and 20s, absolutely loved it. Picked it back up in mid 30s for some reason but found both the quality of drug and come downs worse. I used to self medicate and take small amounts before going to work Blush

Used mushrooms and enjoyed.

Never faniced ket, or heroin.

Taken ecstasy twice but not really enjoyed it. I was the same age as Leah Betts when she died and that stayed with me for some reason.

30s I took Coke socially a couple of times a year. After the last time I decided no more. I don't drink a great deal now either.

Had some great times but also some awful times. My poor mental health definitely played in part in some of my drug use

piepuddingchips · 25/01/2021 20:54

Pills, cocaine, weed.
Tbh some nights I didn't know what I was taking, but everyone else was doing it and it was a guaranteed good night.
My then bf, now dh, hated drugs. When we got serious, after about 2 years, I stopped, not touched anything since.

Jacketpotato84 · 25/01/2021 20:54

Pretty much everything except for crack and heroin. I havent taken a drug for about 3 years and i dont intend to doing so again.
I see people say they are boring for not drinking or taking a drug.. your not boring your sensible and responsible, drugs ruin lifes. Ive tried it and not for me im fortunate i have the willpower to refuse if offered, especially when i have children that could suffer if anything happened to me from doing something so dangerous

Smiledwiththerisingsun · 25/01/2021 20:54

You're all a barrel of laughs 😀😀 god I miss the 90s, raves at uni, we all did hash, mdma and speed. It was great fun but am too old now. Would be horrified if my kids did what we did though!

Agreed! @Marley20 Smile

ConorMasonsWife · 25/01/2021 20:58

A couple of spliffs, but when I was 16 I was very vulnerable and was taken to a 'party' there was no music, not really any drinking, it was a dark and dingy flat and there was about 20 people in total, all doing coke and/or heroin. I felt terrified and chose to walk home alone with no phone or keys for my house at 3am. It completely put me off anything if I'm honest, I don't even really like drinking much.

theviewfromhalfwaydown · 25/01/2021 21:00

Never have and never would. I used to hang round with loads of people who did all sorts but it didn’t interest me. I did drink a lot though.

MisfitRightIn · 25/01/2021 21:04

No, never. I was tempted, but I have an addictive type of personality so I was always worried I’d love it too much.

laidbacklife · 25/01/2021 21:05

Loads! Mainly MDMA and coke. Had many many incredible nights out. Had to ease off in my late 20s but still messed around a little in my early 30s. Not touched a thing for years now and doubt I ever will. I would find it too annoying not to be able to get to sleep when I wanted to - I'm happily in bed by 10pm most nights now! But I have great memories. The 90s was an incredible decade and I'm really glad I enjoyed it. I'm still really good friends with many of my 90s clubbing buddies - but it's strictly booze and food now :)
