Joules clothes...opinions?

Just browsing the Joules sale and some of their clothes look quite nice (a lot of Breton stripes and florals).

I've never bought from there before - does anyone shop there? Is the quality any good?

Not an AIBU but like hearing others' opinions.

I think quality is not as good as it used to be but is still ok, but probably not worth the price. For slightly smarter / classic I like Crew.

OrangeSamphire · 23/01/2021 09:21

I used to buy a few things from Joules for the children when they were smaller. The quality and fit was lovely.

I’ve looked around at the women’s clothes but never bought anything.

Joules is in that same category as Fat Face, White Stuff, Sea Salt and Boden for me I’m afraid. Instantly recognisable zero style.

QuantumQuality · 23/01/2021 09:30

@BringPizza Oh come off it. People liking different clothes to you and preferring stuff that’s appropriate for lounging at home and going to the park? That’s not giving up on yourself.

Someone seriously suggested Hobbs as an alternative. What are people wearing from Hobbs to stand in the mud at the playground when it’s 2 degrees and a bit drizzly?!

tentative3 · 23/01/2021 09:37

Quality has deteriorated a lot and the prints have become more recognisable I think. I agree that in many ways they are the new Cath Kidston. You can get nice things there still but have to be selective, I guess as with anywhere. Their ebay site is good.

Sbowiegirl · 23/01/2021 09:38

I have a raincoat that’s been with me for 6 years from there. Still in fab condition

Also buy most of my sons jackets from there as there is good resale value on eBay or Facebook

Standrewsschool · 23/01/2021 09:39

Hobbs is always touted as the antidote to Joules, Fatface etc. Whenever I look at Hobbs, I find very little I actually like.

I did a style analysis a couple of years ago. One of the biggest lessons I learnt was to ignore the label. My favourite two items of clothing as a result, and what I got most compliments in, was a dress from Topshop and a jumper from Joules. If you buy something that suits your shape and colour, it will be a success, whether from Fatface, Hobbs or Sainsbury.

At 17, reading James Joyce? In a nightclub? Doesn't sound pretentious, at all Grin

Oh, on the contrary, I was a TERRIBLY pretentious teenager! But then, if nobody cared about their image at that age, they wouldn't be getting dressed up to throw shapes (or whatever people do). Teenagers go ott I think, to find the tribe they fit in with. The image I was trying very hard to convey was just different to the norm. It worked! I found my people...well, my person and we are still best friends now, 20 years later!

And on a side note, my taste in clothes probably did improve a bit as I got older and became a mum (mumsy). My taste in literature probably got worse, but you know.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 23/01/2021 10:00

@Standrewsschool I agree with you - it shouldn't be a case of "I only shop at X because I wouldn't be seen dead in any other label".
I am very laid back with clothes; I tend to avoid Primark simply because the queues are horrific and the sizing is off (or at least it used to be). I get a lot of my stuff from eBay too.

@ParisJeTAime you must be very multi skilled being able to read a James Joyce epic in the middle of a rave! Grin

Ugh, it wasn't even a rave, it was some gross cheese night in the town I grew up in. This was the early noughties. Honestly, James Joyce was preferable by a long way!

BoJoHoNo · 23/01/2021 10:15

I only have a couple of shirts from them, but the quality seems pretty decent and I've had compliments whilst wearing them. I'm another who would only buy in the sales as I find their clothes a bit pricey. My friend has a lot of their bretton stripe tops for everyday wear and I think it's a decent smart casual look. Also easy to style with jeans and a put on a cardigan if needed, so very practical with the British weather.

Elphame · 23/01/2021 10:18

My DiL used to work there so I have a few bits.

The quality is fine but I look and feel 10 years older in them. Bit dull and frumpy for me

peaceanddove · 23/01/2021 10:22

I can just about get my head around taking a book to a nightclub (just). But, taking a book by James Joyce? No. Just no.

ParisJeTAime · 23/01/2021 10:25

😂😂😂😂😂

Too late peaceanddove, by approx 20 years. Did it and I'd do it again mwahahaha!

ParisJeTAime · 23/01/2021 10:26

It was also a really old, leather bound, hard back version! Not even one we had to do for school. Sorry, not sorry and everything.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 23/01/2021 10:27

In fairness I was a geeky gawky teen who always has a book on them. I’ve Read in a club, yup. I think @ParisJeTAime is a top lassie reading James Joyce
I Had the horror of going to a work hen do,tiaras, screaming women. Hell yes I read a book and cringed

ParisJeTAime · 23/01/2021 10:32

Ah thanks @HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee Flowers

It's ok, I'm perfectly used to people being scathing about my ways / tastes, which can be a bit unsusual! And my teenage ways were more so, so 🤷‍♀️.

ParisJeTAime · 23/01/2021 10:33

Unusual! Not sure what unsusual is...

ParisJeTAime · 23/01/2021 10:38

Sorry, what a derail!

But, my original point was, you can't look at someone who dresses in a way you don't particularly like and say, "oh they must have such a sad life and not care about themselves! How SAD!", as a pp seemed to imply. There are many reasons why people don't dress like you, and it doesn't mean they are unhappy. So don't worry!

I wish we'd have been friends as teenagers!

I have a Joules coat which is the warmest coat I've had for a long time, looks like new after two years and is generously sized so good all round.

ParisJeTAime · 23/01/2021 10:50

Grin @FrostyChocolateMilkshake. God knows I could have used more friends who didn't think I was quite bonkers Blush. Ah well!

pulltheotheronewillyou · 23/01/2021 10:52

IMO people wearing joules clothing stand out like a sore thumb. It's very mumsy
Some of the kids stuff is ok

Frequentflier · 23/01/2021 10:54

I really hate the flowers and stars on their Breton tops; so twee. But I do like some of their coats.
