Joules clothes...opinions?

Just browsing the Joules sale and some of their clothes look quite nice (a lot of Breton stripes and florals).

I've never bought from there before - does anyone shop there? Is the quality any good?

Not an AIBU but like hearing others' opinions.

I have quite a few of their "harbour" tops. All lovely and nice quality cotton.

But they don't wash very well, basic stains just do not come out.

And the sizing is really off. Sometimes a 10 is skin tight, sometimes it's huge.

NCGardener · 23/01/2021 00:51

Oh also bought a small handbag from joules at the trim came away from the strap within 3 weeks

Had used it about 7 times

:(

Then use a more appropriate subforum like Chat.

Fucking hell, who pissed on your chips? Hmm
MissMarks · 23/01/2021 00:54

Kids stuff good, I personally wouldn’t wear much of the adult stuff as think it is a bit naff to be honest.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 23/01/2021 01:00

Joules, fat face, white stuff all much of a muchness. staid & Middle class mumsy uniform.
The flowery wellies are ghastly

CarrieMoonbeams · 23/01/2021 01:11

I don't buy the florals or the Bretton stripes, but I've got a couple of pairs of the "Monroe" jeans (high waisted - really comfortable, wash well and generously sized) and 2 of the Coast jackets (again, generous sizing, and totally waterproof). Oh and a very decent shirt too.

I found both of the jackets on eBay, brand new with tags, absolute bargains!

PerfidiousAlbion · 23/01/2021 01:25

I like the plain Joules clothes, not the stripy florals.

The quality is good in my experience.

Size wise, I'm a 12 and they're true to size but I always find things tight under the arms. I have deep arms though.

I have several coats and jackets (down, parker, rain, etc..) all in navy blue, black or grey - nothing jaunty. There's been a quality issue with some coats this year if you look at site feedback though. Standards sliding perhaps?

PerfidiousAlbion · 23/01/2021 01:28

Oh, and the hips seem to be very big on everything. A size 12 jacket had gigantic hips. It measured 38" under the arms and 48" around the hips.

Haha, there’s always a group of posters ready to declare stuff ‘mumsy’. Hello, it’s a site aimed at mums. Being and looking like a mum isn’t the insult you think it is.

LakieLady · 23/01/2021 08:32

I've only ever had Breton tops from Joules and they're not a patch on the ones I've got from Sea Salt.

I'm still wearing Sea Salt ones that I bought long before my Joules ones were cut up and used as dusters. The fabric seemed to go thin and flat very quickly and they both shrunk in length, my Sea Salt ones are almost as good as the day I bought them.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 23/01/2021 08:35

@CarrieMoonbeams jeans are the one item of clothes I hate buying. I have a podgy belly but a slim waist - would you recommend Joules jeans for my type figure?

OP posts:
FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 23/01/2021 08:37

@LakieLady I've got a couple of Seasalt bits but it is so expensive- although I assume it is expensive because it's good quality. I love their Mill Pool dresses.

I like Joules, not the stripe/floral combo though. I have a lot of their scarves/Breton tops. I find the sizing to be true to size and in my opinion, they wash well. But then I’m a Seasalt fan too, love their jackets!

likeamillpond · 23/01/2021 08:38

@Tinkywinkydinkydoo

I buy a lot from there but personally find their tops quite short and a bit on the small size, I’m normally a size 8 but get a 10 in joules tops. Line pp said I can easily spot a joules top or coat mikes away Grin
Yes i agree. Their tops are too short in the body. I love their bright flowery linings but don't like it on the outside of their clothes.

To me mumsy clothes means shapeless tops with non-descript prints and bright-for-the-sake-of-it stripes. It sort of signifies that you've given up on looking after yourself, hence mumsy per a mum who puts everything before the tiniest bit of self tlc. Which is sad, really.
Oldraver · 23/01/2021 08:39

I have a few of the Harbour tops, the much disliked Breton/flower combos and I've been disappointed with how the colours haven't washed well. They look years old after a few washes, though were a nice thickness

I've had two t-shirts they were very thin, won't bother with them again

happystory · 23/01/2021 08:40

I have a padded coat that I got from Joules in the sale three years ago. Still going strong. And I wore one of their maxi dresses to death last summer, the quality is good.

Oldraver · 23/01/2021 08:41

Oh should add DS had lots of Joules and was very hard wearing

mintich · 23/01/2021 08:43

I really like Joules but I do stay away from their signature patterns!

Candiscophonous · 23/01/2021 08:45

Disappointing quality with splitting wellies, crappy zips , and bobbly wool blends.

Confused what a strange assumption to make, over someone having different taste in clothes than you do. Lots of people, without kids, aren't interested in fashion at all, or can't afford to be, or love fashion but get it wrong. It doesn't make them 'sad'.

Anyway, I don't get offended over 'mumsy'. I'm a mum, but my tastes have always been pretty practical. My best friend and I met in a nightclub. I had been dragged along by friends (not my scene). I was wearing jeans and one of my dad's old jumpers and reading a book. I was 17 at the time! Not a mum. If anyone thought I looked sad, well, I wasn't (except the music was just dreadful), just had different tastes! Some people like high heels, cute dresses and dancing, some like comfort and books. Meh.

ParisJeTAime · 23/01/2021 08:57

Some people like high heels, cute dresses and dancing, some like comfort and books. Meh.

And obviously, some people like both at different times. Since I was busy reading James Joyce in the middle of a nightclub, you can probably guess I'm not one of them Grin🤓.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/01/2021 09:05

I must have been lucky as I haven’t experienced any of the above. Wellies do split after 2/3 years I wear them every day. But I think that’s ok.

CarrieMoonbeams · 23/01/2021 09:10

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake, I'd give them a go if I were you. I don't have a very defined waist myself but definitely a tum, and I can honestly say that these jeans are wonderfully stretchy. If you're between sizes, I'd order one of each size I think, or size down.

I just ordered the second pair recently from the House of Fraser website, they were about £42 plus P&P. Can't remember if returns would have been free though.

Lucieintheskye · 23/01/2021 09:11

The quality is okay, some pieces I've had barely survive 2 washes. Not the same quality as fatface or seasalt.

Honestly I'd rather buy from Sainsbury's and know the clothes are what you pay for. Joules seems to lower their quality everytime they come back in fashion.
