To get a welfare check on my neighbors?

Catsandkittens638297 · 21/01/2021 07:13

My neighbors are usually up all night till 3am with their kids (they had two young children) screaming, running about, crying and it was every night, the children would scream and cry when they argue. Our walls are so thin I could hear them walking about.
When we first moved in they where arguing and I swear she was shouting for help.
They argue quite alot usually in their language.
I used to see them about on the street quite alot to.
A couple of days before Christmas they where arguing quite badly early hours of the morning (2/3am. Im up with my toddler every night so I always hear it)
But since then iv not heard anything, it's radio silent, literally not a peep since before Christmas. Their car is still parked outside, there's things still in their garden too so I don't think they've moved.only thing that's changed is their shed door is open (not been burgled).

Would you get in touch with 101 to get a welfare check? Just feels abit weird to me.

@EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide

Unless you speak Polish, you don't know that they're Polish, they could be any foreign nationality, not that it's relevant. I can't believe you are only concerned now, three weeks later 🙄
What an odd comment.

I don't speak Spanish but I know what it sounds like Hmm

MaelyssQ · 21/01/2021 10:34

I hope the family are okay. Probably gone back to Poland and now unable to return due to travel restrictions.

Lorieandrews · 21/01/2021 10:37

@AlternativePerspective

I would stay out of it. Given you weren’t bothered enough to call the police when you say you thought she’d shouted for help, it seems fairly obvious that you’re only calling now out of nosiness/curiosity.

And realisticallly what do you think has happened? That he’s murdered them all and then killed himself?

The police will knock on the door but nothing more.Of course they won’t break down the door because the neighbours say they haven’t heard them for a while.

My neighbours are almost identical. They shout, scream, make noise, play their piano at all hours, shout and row at 3 AM and ironically, I haven’t heard them for a while either.

But they’re Chinese and I suspect they’ve gone home for Christmas, and have probably had to quarantine when they got there meaning they’ve had to stay longer.

Chris watts wife was on a Facebook page I was on and posted quite regularly. I remember the admin saying about her death

If only she’d reached out to someone on the group. But then what? What if they thought like you and said. Oh fuck it. She’s probably lying anyway.

Emeraldshamrock · 21/01/2021 10:41

Yes definitely.
If there is no harm no problem.
It reminds me of a case in Dublin before Christmas the mother and 2DC lay for a week before the neighbours thankfully got concerned and call the gardai.

Iamnotaosureaboutthis123 · 21/01/2021 10:43

Very worrying op x

movingonup20 · 21/01/2021 10:48

@raspberrysundaes

The reason I know if someone is speaking Spanish is that actually I do recognise some words, I could easily muddle done Eastern European languages because I don't know any eg it might be polish but also Bulgarian. And through a wall isn't easy to understand even English.

Really hoping they went home to visit family and got stuck in a lockdown there (quite likely with timing)

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 21/01/2021 10:49

@furiouswiththenhs so you could tell the difference between Latvian, Hungarian and Polish for instance?
I think your username says a lot about you...

LaurieFairyCake · 21/01/2021 10:50

You'd still see lights on behind blinds if you went out at night

OnNaturesCourse · 21/01/2021 10:50

Call the police and make them aware.

How old are the kids? School age? Do you know if the parents work?

Does sound like they've gone back to visit home but it's better to be safe than sorry.

zaffa · 21/01/2021 10:51

@SimmerDownNow

And realisticallly what do you think has happened? That he’s murdered them all and then killed himself?

Someone in my town did this. So I would say that yes, it's a possibility.

Years ago (seventies) someone in my town did this and was discovered by a BT engineer I think so absolutely does happen in extreme circumstances.

I would be very suspicious if noisy neighbours suddenly went very silent - I am generally quite nosy though but I would have found a reason to pop round and try chatting to them already (even if it's made up like I'm looking for my cat or did they see a rat in the garden as I had seen one or something) but I'd also never forgive myself is something had happened and I didn't do anything at all when doing something isn't that hard.

Well done OP for making the call

OnNaturesCourse · 21/01/2021 10:53

My silly app just updated and I see your update re the police taking some action.

Well done, you've done what you can and now hopefully the police will get some answers.

notapizzaeater · 21/01/2021 10:54

This length of time I'd be worried. Would any flights be leaving the country at the mo ? And it's a long time without food deliveries. Hope the police get an answer.

Star81 · 21/01/2021 10:55

Glad the police have been so quick to check up on this.

Or maybe as they are her neighbours she has actually spoken to them in the past and they told her they were Polish. I know it's not the norm on here but loads of us do have a relationship with our neighbours.
MMMarmite · 21/01/2021 11:10

I would just assume they'd gone away. I don't necessary tell my neighbours when I'm going away, and with a long distance relationship and all the lockdowns, that's often for quite long periods at the moment. If they were working from home or on furlough, and the school shut, maybe they decided to stay with relatives. Or they may have found it hard to come back due to covid travel restrictions.

The screaming for help is worrying though, I would report that.

Catsandkittens638297 · 21/01/2021 11:14

Police just called with an update. They're currently stuck in albania trying to get a flight back!

Lipz · 21/01/2021 11:14

Fair play for phoning.

If things don't feel right, there's no harm in having things checked out.

They may be away but at least you won't be worrying.

Mindymomo · 21/01/2021 11:16

Well done in ringing the police. You can now have a bit more peace knowing that they are ok. Plus a bit of quiet time.

You might want to reach out and establish relationships with at least one neighbour. It's good to have someone looking out for you and help close by if you need it (in any circumstances, but just during a pandemic), especially if you live alone.

Great news, well done OP. Hope the break has done them good and they are more peaceful on their return!!

That is the first thing I thought of. The neighbours only called when they saw water pouring out under the door from a tap left on. It was heartbreaking.
PatchworkElmer · 21/01/2021 11:21

Oh phew, that’s good news. Hope they get back safe.
