"For there is always light
If only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it."

— Amanda Gorman, 20 Jan 2021, inauguration of President Joe R Biden
@derxa I see what you're getting at about the BBC. OTOH, that's the point about US politics, it is very polarised, and it's right that the BBC should highlight this. Biden has his work cut out if he's serious about fostering unity rather than further division.
I've been really tearful today. So many deaths due to Covid. I need to get off SM. I want sensible not sensationalist reporting.

borntobequiet · 20/01/2021 22:55

They keep featuring nutters, vox pop people and extreme commentators from either side. They need to dial it down.

R4 particularly annoying with this at the moment. Not only do they feature these dingbats, but they either treat them with kid gloves, so they think they’re being taken seriously, or patronise them, which they don’t recognise, and think they’re being taken seriously.

“And why did you think armed insurrection was a good idea, Mr Smith? Oh, you were only trying to respect the Constitution. How interesting. And you, Mr Brown? QAnon? Conspiracy? Well done. And now the weather. Cold and wet with sporadic violence. Nick?

Love the title of today’s Americast! Going to listen in bed now.

The BBC are often hell bent on “showing both sides” but there’s a difference in balanced argument and giving extremists a mouthpiece.

They’ve form for it on other contentious issues as the Feminism boards will show.

Sorry to hear that derxa. It's horrible isn't it... I have to avoid the news I just can't stand it, so depressing.

CaveMum · 20/01/2021 23:00

derxa if you need a positive thread to follow this one is great. Lots of positive updates on the vaccine roll out and what a great job is being done.

Some photos from the Oval Office

A quick redesign of the Oval Office for President Biden:

 • Busts of MLK and RFK flank a fireplace in the office.
 • Large portrait of FDR
 • Paintings of Jefferson and Hamilton
 • Clinton’s draps and blue rug

Love the re-design.

Seeing who's playing at the inaugural concert I wish I could stay awake for it... such a fantastic lineup, lots of my favourites. Too tired here!

minou123 · 20/01/2021 23:20

I bet the first press conference is going to be weird. I think journalists are so ingrained with finding everything the president says ridiculous, that its going to be a hard habit to break.

Biden: We will implement the following sensible things to control the pandemic

Journalists: What Mr President?! What you are saying is not true.... oh, no. Hold on, thats right.

They are not going to know what to do with themselves.

whereismormonjesus · 20/01/2021 23:23

Never paid attention to Biden’s family until today, but the ones we’ve seen today look close knit and genuine which is lovely. I remember when Trump tried to show affection to his kids for the cameras and both parties would look extremely uncomfortable.

That baby we keep seeing is going to sleep well tonight, that’s for sure Grin

Wackadoo · 20/01/2021 23:28

Late to the party as I'm on the other side of the world, but Lady Gaga absolutely nailed it.

She also seemed to be beaming with happiness and pride.

Dongdingdong · 20/01/2021 23:28

I wasn’t thrilled to see George Bush Jr at the inauguration - he took America into the Iraq War FFS! (I’m sure the posters on this thread who feel sorry for Saddam Hussein weren’t too happy to see him there either, although for different reasons Hmm)

Dongdingdong · 20/01/2021 23:31

Whatever you think about Trump, he does love his kids IMO. He made a touching reference to them in his parting speech and Ivanka was in tears in the audience! I think there’s a close family bond there.

Former presidents perhaps felt duty to attend as the outgoing president couldn’t find the grace to so.

CrochetOrBust · 20/01/2021 23:36

I think all the former presidents normally go, don’t they? I know Carter wasn’t there but at 96 and in the middle of a pandemic I think he can be excused!
DuncinToffee · 20/01/2021 23:36

I’m sure the posters on this thread who feel sorry for Saddam Hussein

WTF

Dongdingdong · 20/01/2021 23:37

I just remember Bush saying to Michelle Obama after Trumps inauguration speech ‘that’s some weird shit’

If only Al Gore had become president instead.

Cokie3 · 20/01/2021 23:38

I am so happy today, it's just amazing! I have forgotten what an actual President looks and sounds like. It feels,..... strange. Like, it was only a bit of 4 years ago that Obama was still the President. But it seems more like 10+ years ago.

But look at this; this video here is truly disturbing, on a level I don't even have words to describe, except that this what happens when people truly fall for a Cult, with a Cult Leader like Trump. Beware, it's a video (58 seconds long) of what I'd call a very seriously mentally ill Trump supporter having an emotional breakdown over Biden being inaugurated. It's not even funny, it's quite heartbreaking in a way. It's on this twitter link:
