"For there is always light
If only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it."

— Amanda Gorman, 20 Jan 2021, inauguration of President Joe R Biden

Jon Sopel on BBC News just now: “crazy town is likely to be replaced by Dullsville - but perhaps that’s what America needs right now”.

Well now, this is good news.

I'm watching this. It's frightening

Tbh, I don’t feel the need to retain any class when talking about that man.

Moving on...I’m so glad the Trump crowd’s election steal tantrum seems to have ended with a small whimper rather than a loud bang. The videos of the protestors upset that they are the only one who turned up to protest in their area are brilliant.

Trumpism though I’m sure is unfortunately here to stay, and remains very dangerous to America. Trump getting in brought the radical right wing nutters well and truly out of the woodwork and they aren’t just going to go away. America has a lot of work to do.

Dongdingdong · 20/01/2021 22:17

@derxa frightening? How so?

I imagine Derxa was referring to the “Southern Patriots” interviewed as part of the story. Armed, angry and not particularly intelligent.

The BBC is stoking up division.

I think Biden did a good job addressing that in his speech. He struck the exact right tone.

derxa · 20/01/2021 22:21

I want to go back to the days when politics was quite boring. Twitter has a lot to answer for. And the MSM

Dongdingdong · 20/01/2021 22:22

The BBC is stoking up division.

@derxa Sorry - am I missing something? Why would the BBC want to stoke up division between Trump and Biden supporters?

52andblue · 20/01/2021 22:23

PMK. Amazing Day! 🤗

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/01/2021 22:24

Biden neatly side stepped questions of the contents of the letter left by Trump.

"It's a private letter and I won't discuss the contents"

Dongdingdong · 20/01/2021 22:24

I want to go back to the days when politics was quite boring.

I know what you mean, but on the other hand - politics shouldn’t be viewed as boring or be boring. That’s partly why we got into the current situation IMO. Apathy.

They keep featuring nutters, vox pop people and extreme commentators from either side. They need to dial it down.
Shrillharridan · 20/01/2021 22:26

derxa you're not wrong :(

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 20/01/2021 22:26

Congratulations to all Americans.

The surreal nightmare has left the building as wise sense and sensibility returns!

Putting America back on the map as dysfunctional stupidity is democratically defeated with legacy matters to be fairly resolved according to legal justice and not mob rule.

World peace, compassion and unity not uncivil war and destruction for personal fame and fortune.

Roussette · 20/01/2021 22:30

I just hope he can carry it through. Yes, he hit exactly the right note. But 45's supporters are convinced they're all being sent off to de-programming centres!

And I just watched a supporter of his on tiktok literally wailing and crying like the end of the world had just happened.

Biden has a hell of a lot of work to do! My hope is... he has a good team behind him, there are spring shoots of hope that McConnell may work with him sometimes as opposed to against him, and there is only the likes of Gaetz and Cruz to fan the flames.

Gaetz has already done that with the most ridiculous vid, he's talking like Trump hasn't left! He is calling it The America First Movement with Trump as it's leader, and saying the media and 'establishment Republicans just don't understand 'our movement'. Think he's lost it actually...

Dongdingdong · 20/01/2021 22:33

@derxa I can’t say I’ve noticed, but then I don’t watch it every night. You say they’re featuring nutters and extreme commentators from both sides though - at least they’re balanced.

@derxa I see what you're getting at about the BBC. OTOH, that's the point about US politics, it is very polarised, and it's right that the BBC should highlight this. Biden has his work cut out if he's serious about fostering unity rather than further division.

PerkingFaintly · 20/01/2021 22:42

I'm jealous, snowliving. We just got royal weddings at school.

Still, any bunk off is a good bunk off.Grin
