@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

DGRossetti We believe this airport should be renamed 'Joe Biden International'. I'd happily sign if it was clear it was a jolly jape and renamed for a day.

You might be lucky to: you sign, and they send you email saying "click on this link to sign in"; so you click on the link and it takes you back to the petition. There is as far as I can make out no way to get in touch with a human being to say "your link isn't working", and their helpline is a bot.

I may be getting "please sign in by clicking on this link" emails until the end of time; two so far.

As I said, I wasn't signing. Just putting it out there.

Brewdog were one of the first companies to try and make alcohol for hand sanitiser last year. Deserves mention when we also remember how pisspoor every UK government inaction has been.

@RedToothBrush

Good, then you should agree thay in future posts people shouldn't use twitter as a source of news then in any posts going forward. Links to direct pdfs or msm or official federal websites.

If you use twitter as a news agency feed this is exactly what you do.

I use it for this reason. To source that type of information.

You clearly you use twitter differently.

I don't eveb have a twitter account so how I can use twitter differently?

And the poster i was replying to is all about having legitimate sources of information so I was asking that poster that they just agree that twitter isn't then

So what exactly is your point to me?

TheNorthWestPawsage · 23/01/2021 13:03

Does this mean he's admitting he did have a role in the riot? Hmm

So it seems that the impeachment is scheduled for February which might not be a bad idea. I wonder who Donald Trump has appointed as his defense lawyer?

Twitter can be a reliable source of information.

Many MSM have accounts, as well as reputable journalists.
I also follow scientist colleagues or reputable scientists who link to actual publications and offer valuable insights .

pointythings · 23/01/2021 13:08

RTB's point is that a lot of Twitter newsfeeds contain actual links back to original source material.

For someone who doesn't use Twitter you have a lot of opinions on it.

And on your point that 'everything that goes badly from now on is Joe Biden's fault' - well, that's just childish. It takes more than 2 days to undo the harm done in 4 years and if you don't understand that, you really need to read up on how political systems work.

DGRossetti · 23/01/2021 13:09

Don't call them stupid.

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jan/23/donald-trump-lawsuit-lord-of-the-rings-gondor-election

Donald Trump’s diehard supporters are often accused of living in fantasyland, but one court case recently launched to try to reinstall him as president has surprised even the most hardened observers of Trumpian strangeness by citing as evidence a mythological realm from The Lord of the Rings.

The case was launched in Texas, in the name of small conservative groups including Latinos for Trump and Blacks for Trump, and was filed by Paul Davis, an attorney who lost his job after posting Instagram videos of himself at the attack on the Capitol.

The case offers a baseless mix of allegations of electoral fraud common among the Trump base and calls for the voiding of every vote cast in the election – which was won handily by now-President Joe Biden, who was sworn in this week.

But – unusually for a legal strategy – the case cites as evidence to back up its pro-Trump claims the tragic fate of the kingdom of Gondor, one of the central realms of JRR Tolkien’s fantasy classic, whose exiled ruler, Aragorn, was played onscreen by Viggo Mortensen.

(contd)

Please, please, please can I call them fucking stupid ?

Clicketyclick21 · 23/01/2021 13:10

It looks like Hawley is admitting that he did have a role but is saying it will cause more divisions to investigate him. Or is that a coded threat? That the mob will cause divisions again if he is investigated for his role. He reckons he should have a free pass because he is a white, privileged male. If he was from a BAME community, he'd have been arrested by now & so would have Lauren Boebert. It just shows how racially divided the US is, even more than the UK.

Was he? I missed that, what was it..
Smile

Twitter news sites are totally legitimate sources of information. For me, it gets me the news or headlines the quickest way and I follow all sorts of news sources to get a broad view. It saves me having to hunt all over the internet for instant news.

PerkingFaintly · 23/01/2021 13:15

Oh! Interesting, TheNorthWest.

While I don't see how it would be right to investigate Hawley and chums for continuing to object to the certifications per se (even though that behaviour was repulsive and unwarranted), it's certainly right to investigate whether any of their actions (including the abovementioned delaying tactics) were to further the attack on the capital.

Especially in the light of the allegations being made about the mob having assistance from inside.

And Hawley doesn't want an investigation, eh? No shit!

OP posts:
Clicketyclick21 · 23/01/2021 13:30

Time to make that slimey shit Hawley sweat a bit, nobody is above the law. That's the problem with this new breed of entitled, QAnon republicans. They think they should have a free pass to disrupt democratic processes and not be held responsible for their actions.

I wonder what kind of legal work he was doing before he lost his job?

This.

I can find out about government policy making and things like consultations that I would otherwise not know about via twitter.

If you follow experts in their field, they can point you in the right direction of information.

A lot of journalism is about precisely this type of signposting. Journalists report on things, but they also source it and cite where to find the original material so you can check for yourself if the report they give is accurate / makes the relevant points / the degree to which the reporter has applied bias.

And this is where I find it particularly useful.

Say for example theres an article on haulage and how Brexit is impacting it, I wouldn't have the foggest where to find a haulage website aimed at truckers with reports about how drivers and firms are handling it and sharing information with each other inside the industry. But a journalist for the mass media might direct me to this niche information. Or they might talk about a medical study write up a summary but would cite it, so I can look that up.

I don't look everything in this way, but I certainly do look up a fair amount that interests me and I don't necessarily take the journalist at face value (unless its a journalist who has a particularly good track record and I have learnt to trust).

I studied journalism and know how to navigate around twitter to make the best use of it and to judge the reliability of sources. And to cross reference with other sources on the same subject.

I know not everyone has the skills to do this. I personally think it is something that needs teaching better to allow kids to make the optium use of twitter and to weed out poor journalism, bias and ultimately fake news.

Clicketyclick21 · 23/01/2021 14:13

Bernie Sanders is too left leaning for many Americans. Socialist leanings equals communism to the trumpies, he'd never become president.

DGRossetti · 23/01/2021 14:16

'everything that goes badly from now on is Joe Biden's fault'

I think I have always made a point of indicating which news outlet the tweeter represents when I have posted tweets.
Roussette · 23/01/2021 14:37

Great post RedTB, exactly the way Twitter should be used. It is a valuable source and anyone who doesn't use it but comes on a longstanding thread saying we can't use it as a source from now on... well... obviously they don't know much.

Through the life of these threads for the last 5 years we have done our best to be as accurate as possible which is why we had a paper written on us entitled “Citizen Curation” in Online Discussions of Donald Trump’s Presidency" by two Professors.

^Having acknowledged the selective subjectivity of the curatorial process performed by our participants, and how far our
participants are willing to go to validate news stories shared in this way, we argue that our participants demonstrated a clear awareness of the veracity and potential subjectivity of their sources, worked collaboratively to verify news items, and were proud of their ability to “scoop”the mainstream news media on occasion^
Participants were encouraged not to take the word of other posters about a source but to read and research for themselves. Commenting on an ABC News interview with Trump, a poster provided a link to the transcript of the interview, encouraging others to“read it and judge for yourself”. Another participant encouraged others to read an article on a law blog with the words “Long article but worth reading”. Others followed up their original posts with links to further sources in order to verify what was claimed

We come out of it well. Just a small sample of what was said above. The paper talks extensively about Twitter and how far we go to verify, check and double check statements we make.
I have a copy if anyone wants it.

Some may not last their full term. Hmm

Roussette · 23/01/2021 14:38

Sorry... the formatting went a bit wonky. Quotes for the Paper start at 'Having acknowledged........'

RedToothBrush · 23/01/2021 14:45

Twitter also is useful for seeing how people see the same information in different ways. In crowd sourcing you can pick up ideas or problems that government or the media have missed which should be considered.

In this way its possible to increase public public participation in politics in a way which has real positive effect if politicians / journalists are prepared to listen and engage (and the engagement is in good faith and on balance is fair comment and benefits society generally).
