"For there is always light
If only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it."

— Amanda Gorman, 20 Jan 2021, inauguration of President Joe R Biden

"It's only in the light of the utter normality that Biden has projected over these last two days that you can really see just how not-normal every last bit of the Trump presidency actually was. And how it was all just so totally exhausting."

Have CNN been a little, ahem, blind these past 4 years?

I think we've all been aware of the insanity, including CNN. But I think to a certain extent we'd become (to paraphrase the ad) semi-'nose-blind' to just how all encompassing and continual it was. Almost (and I've used this before) like someone in an abusive relationship. You see 'events' but you don't see the totality of it all. It's only now that we're beginning to relax and lay down the burden that we realize we've been carrying 500 lbs and not 50, just as many abused people don't realize how bad it really was until they're out.

They did enjoy the drama, though. It gets viewers.

For all those who haven't watched today's Presser with Jen Psaki and wondering how it went... here is an interesting thread on it

She can hold her own, that's for sure.

DuncinToffee · 22/01/2021 19:15

President Biden @POTUS

As we mark the 48th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, now is the time to rededicate ourselves to the work ahead. From codifying Roe to eliminating maternal and infant health disparities, our Administration is committed to ensuring everyone has access to the health care they need.

Lweji · 22/01/2021 19:36

Watching the presser for fun.

I would hope that Fauci would start pointing out that taking masks off to speak leaves a cloud of aerosols and small particles around the podium, for the next speaker to breathe in. Unless ventilation is really good.
I do worry for them.

Hence why I dislike the eliminate women posts.

Abortion and women's healthcare is a HUGE issue in the USA
much, much bigger than TRAs

NotaRealLawyer · 22/01/2021 20:37

According to the New York Times:

Former President Donald J. Trump’s new impeachment lawyer, Butch Bowers, is a South Carolina-based attorney who was arranged through Senator Lindsey Graham and has a long history of representing politicians in his home state.

Mr. Bowers will lead Mr. Trump’s defense in the eventual trial for his second impeachment, Mr. Graham and Jason Miller, an adviser to Mr. Trump, confirmed.

So probably what Lindsay Graham was talking to DOOFUS about on the plane?

So agree.

The defunding of Planned Parenthood is awful. STI testing , birth control, cancer screenings... it's all to stop abortion and affects womens health care. And it affects the poorest of women.

I watched John Oliver being interviewed by Stephen Colbert a few months into Trumps presidency and they were saying everyone thinks because of the insanity, their shows rewrite themselves. But actually, they felt trying to keep up with all the ridiculousness was increibly tiring and far harder than you'd believe. I guess for news outlets, he was perfect but for everyone else, me included, he was just an exhausting stream of crazy!

@Cacacoisfarraige

I see Joe's inauguration TV numbers were higher than Trumps (about 1 million higher )
Oof, that is going to be brutally when he hears that.

But of course it'll be "Fake News"

Lweji · 22/01/2021 21:22

Shame a certain former president can't tweet about it.

My worry was that if Trump won a second term, with a conservative SCOTUS, he would try to - if not actually reverse Roe v Wade - certainly tighten up anti abortion legislation.
I think ProLife voters ensured that Trump would get a substantial vote despite all his failings.

I was reading an article about Lauren Boebert (another ultra Conservative freshman Rep), which said not only is she anti abortion (fine, that's up to one's conscience) but ALSO anti funding of Planned Parenthood, and comprehensive sex education in schools.
This is a woman who didn't finish High School because she became pregnant and left education to have her baby. So her political stance seems to increase the likelihood of other young women also failing to complete vital education.
(Happily she eventually married her child's father and had another 3 children, including one born in the front seat of truck on the way to the hospital!)

Glenn Kessler
@GlennKesslerWP
I had a question about five factual statements in a recent Biden speech. I received citations and documents backing up those numbers 15 minutes after sending an emailed request for back-up.

That's because Biden quotes statements and numbers that are not a figment of imagination, unlike DOOFUS

lionheart · 22/01/2021 21:42

@Roussette

He is prepared to come across as utterly brainless to stoke anger and division then... could be so.
To be honest, I don't think the brainless part is entirely fake.

Remember when he tried to trip up Sally Yates and it did not go well for him?

@DGRossetti

Returning to the fuck-all preparations for vaccine rollout ...

I'd hope a team of seasoned and competent operators in the Biden camp would have anticipated such a possibility and done their best to mitigate it.

However, on a plus note, there are few nations on earth that are capable of going from a standing start to 100,000,000 vaccines in 100 days, and the US is probably still at the top of that list.

It really is over to you - impress us. This should really be childs play for the only country in the world that has put men on the moon like it was a new bus service. And that over 50 years ago.

I really hope you're right. I got an email from my GP practice today - biggest healthcare practice in the state, with over 100k patients. It included...

"The supply of COVID vaccine arriving in Maine continues to be less than we need. Because of these limitations, we are focusing our vaccination efforts on patients 80 years and older, particularly those with a medical condition that puts them at greater risk of serious complications from COVID.

I know many of you are eager to receive the vaccine, and I wish I could provide you with a timeframe. The supply of vaccine we received this week is less than a third of what is needed to vaccinate patients in their eighties and nineties. The Maine CDC continues to lobby for an increase in our allotment, and we are prepared to ramp up our vaccination efforts when that happens."

The states are ready. The healthcare systems are ready. We just needed the federal government running this shitshow to do their jobs.

Bahahaha do you think he would actually care? Lets play that numbers game:

Biden had over 80 million votes . He has approx 6m followers on twitter if all 6m are his voters that equates to less than 1% of his voters

According to Trumps archived twitter he had 33million followers (at one point im sure he had 80million) but going with the archived account 30million, if all 30 million are his voters of which he had 70 million votes thats 42%.

Now I dont believe it a simply every follower is a voter but still it puts it into perspective though.

gwenneh · 22/01/2021 21:50

Exactly. My state is getting 100,000 doses per week and there are currently something like 5 million eligible to be vaccinated at the moment. It's chaos.

However, I did get my first dose today. Now if I can just get my parents their appointments, I'll be delighted.

cyclingmad · 22/01/2021 21:51

I actually think its a disappointing number, I would of expected it to be far higher than that given everyone was so happy to see Trump go.
