I was on these threads a lot when Trump won the election in 2016. I still dip in from time to time as a lurker. It feels fitting to come back as the Biden administration is inaugurated. It has been a long haul but I am proud of the American people who voted for Biden and made this happen.

minou123 · 20/01/2021 08:39

I've woken up with such a spring in my step Grin

But - can I make a prediction?
We are all watching and commenting today, I suspect we may need another thread today. I'm guessing this thread will be full by 3pm (UK time) today. Grin

Do we need to prepare a new thread title?

Would be so nice if those positive winds of change in America became the jet stream that swept across the Atlantic to blow away the incompetent and insufferable UK politicians

Sadly for us though the damage is irreparable and already done. Sorry for the pessimistic note here but as happy as I am for the US (a country I deeply care about), i am feeling overwhelming sadness at the damage that's been inflicted on the UK.
Brexit is breaking us. We can't undo it. The treaty is signed and it's going to make us all poorer. The consequences are far reaching and irreversible. Sorry guys.

As for Bannon, his toxic bile is responsible for so much populism outside the US I am very angry at the lack of retribution for him and his ilk. His rhetoric is also responsible for a close friendship breaking down. I feel personal about this. Somehow today's emotion is one of anger for me.

@minou123 - "Biden Farewell to Trump (Trump #123)" remains apt for today. (Still she persists Wink @Roussette)

Excellent! We can have the new title on standby

I suspect we will need it Grin

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 20/01/2021 08:52

I can't start a thread myself as I can't keep up at the back and make useful remarks. Also, I have recently discovered we now live in a village where there's a power cut every time it rains heavily or there's lightning, which is likely to happen again tonight. So that's my excuse, but if anyone would like to take that thread title and run with it, you're very welcome!

Roussette · 20/01/2021 08:53

Apollo you've picked a good day to come back here!
We're all going to sleep better once Joe and Kamala are sworn in.

MyNameIsArthur · 20/01/2021 08:54

Thank goodness

thecatfromjapan · 20/01/2021 08:54

cricketballs3 I came on to post that!!! You've beaten me to it. 😁

Wow!!! I am so pleased.

Roussette · 20/01/2021 09:00

Oh yes... it's going to be fast moving today, and we're hot to trot!

The weather is shit outside, Storm Christophe is meaning I cannot walk in this awful weather, I have a loaf of bread in the breadmaker, and I am going to spend all day revelling in the new start with Biden and Harris wooohooo.

@Songsofexperience I do agree with you. But after the very moving memorial last night for the pandemic bereavements, the signing of Hallelujah and Amazing Grace (so moving) it's the start of a positive day of moving forward for me. (I'll go back to being a grouch on Twitter tomorrow)

A summary of the achievements of the leaving President.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 20/01/2021 09:10

I’m going to be watching the inauguration with wine and snacks. It feels a bit like (and I apologise for being glib) tuning in for a series finale.

I watched Trump’s recorded exit speech last night and found it chilling, the last bit about the movement just getting started and mentioning the inauguration at noon just sounded like a barely coded call to arms.

I really hope it goes smoothly and Trump slinks off into obscurity with his ever dwindling base.

lionheart · 20/01/2021 09:11

Bannon has been pardoned.

Roussette · 20/01/2021 09:12

Lweji I agree about his speech. I found it chilling too. He was still calling to his followers, he was shouty and unpleasant in the bit I watched.

Songsofexperience · 20/01/2021 09:13

Oh I know @roussette! I feel bad for feeling bad iyswim. Yesterday's ceremony was beautiful and emotional and that triggered all sorts of emotions because the last 12 months especially were so tough. You know, when you bottle things up and it comes out in a mess at some point... that's kind of how I feel.

Roussette · 20/01/2021 09:15

This is long overdue and very welcome

Yes, I get it. This last year has been horrendous for so many people and the neverending cycle of Trump awfulness has exacerbated that. I suppose I think the hard work starts tomorrow and today is a day off. Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets even. Wink

I haven't watched the speech and I don't want to. Brrr

I’ve watched the first five minutes and think it sounds fine so far. The bit where he addressed his children and said “you fill my world with joy and light” was actually quite touching. And the part where he wished the new administration luck was good too.
