@DGRossetti

wrt to Pence UK posters may recall that it as only when the Tories were free of the ball and chain that was the LibDems that we realised how much we had been protected by Cleggy.
This I do wonder.

Pence's silence has been read as complicit. I suspect the truth is rather more complex.

Pence is the one person, Trump couldn't fire. Pence also made an oath before God to serve as VP and to uphold the constitution.

Pence clearly shares many views but he also ultimately proved he believed in the constitution and his oath before God more. Imagine 4 years of believing you had to serve out your term in full as you had sworn, but also being fearful of Trump's attack on the constitution AND having your own political beliefs you want to see out and in Pence's case, see as sacred.

Thats a hell of a tight rope to walk. And one best served by silence.

Clearly Trump served a purpose but Pence, whether we like and his beliefs, ultimately was American patriot when pushed into the corner and ultimately does believe in the principle of democracy.

And when your religious beliefs are as strong as Pence's to walk away in the way he has, has to hurt and still is brave to do, knowing that Biden will reverse many things.

I would argue that Pence must also have a degree of deep personal respect for Biden in order to do that too.

I do think that Trump and Pence were definitely fellow travellers but however much I think he went along with it, he proved that eventually saying 'enough' is still important even at the 11th Hour.

We shall see where the future takes us. As I say, I fully expect revisionist views of him and its perhaps more interesting than Trump because it reveals more about America. We've seen the red necks with their guns in the UK on the tv, but the American Christian Right is still something that is almost alien to our European world view. (And a large part of why almost all Europeans tend to lean more Democrat than Republican as we find it hard to identify with the evangelicals as we just don't have anything comparible).

RedToothBrush · 20/01/2021 19:57

@nevertrustaherdofcows

Actually, Pence did the same while Kamala and the 2nd Dude were waving them off
Yeah he walked his wife to the car, opened the door for her let her in and then walked back around the car and got in himself.

I noticed the respect, even if he has an otherwise pretty backwards view of women.

RedToothBrush · 20/01/2021 20:03

Of course if Pence is Clegg does that mean we missed the Cameron / Osborne or that we will bypass that and go straight to May/Johnson era in US politics sometime in the future????!

I'm European RTB and I'm perfectly able to understand that people would want to pass on their belief in God. Mumsnet mocks Christianity therefore it can't understand anyone with deeply held religious beliefs. Trump appears to have little religious belief. Conversely Joe Biden seems to be a sincere Catholic.

@Goingtothebudgies

Wouldn't your husband opening the car door for you drive you up the wall? What a waste of time.
No, it's basic manners. What mine does is get in, get himself comfortable, look in the mirrors, start the car, then remember that we don't have central locking. If he had basic manners then it wouldn't matter that our car is that antedeluvian, or what the weather is like. It was one of hte things that really jolted me when I stayed witha cousin who always opened the car door for me. At the very least, it indicates that they are ready to get in themselves and not suddenly going to rush off to make a phone call....which dh has also done. Blush

@RedToothBrush I agree re Pence. He also a lot of bravery when you consider that rioters were chanting 'Hang Pence', and that he must have feared for his family as well. He was the one who called in the National Guard as well when Trump wouldn't do so.

Ultimately, he's a believer in democracy as well as a devout Christian, and he refused to break the oath he made to God to uphold the constitution.

RedToothBrush · 20/01/2021 20:18

Also Bush was a silent Never Trumper. I think a lot more silent Never Trumpers could appear in time. More than were ever Never Trumpers if you get my meaning.

Pence didn't technically have the power to call in the National Guard from everything I read.

And then you have the two Fox executives who called Arizona ridiculously early which had the effect of heading off Trump trying to declare he had won.

And you have the Eugene Goodman moment where he delays the insurrection at 2:14pm just by the Senate door which was only sealed at 2:16pm.

There are many sliding doors moments here.

@Bejazzled

Pence has more dignity in his little finger than the fat baby has in his whole body.
And his eye on 2024! Not criticising him, he behaved like a statesman about the Capitol riot. I wonder if we really have heard the last of Trump or will he be pulling the strings on an Ivanka WH bid in 2024 or 2028?
ListeningQuietly · 20/01/2021 20:44

I am glad that Pence obeyed the rules

I am glad to see Seneca here

I am glad that today passed off peacefully

I am hopeful that Biden will manage and coordinate a good team

I am hopeful that I will be able to visit my aged P soon

Theres a difference between religious and evangelical though.

Bush actually accepted Biden as President as soon as the results were declared, unlike other leading Republicans. I never liked him when he was President but I have to give credit where it's due. (Although he didn't have to worry about currying favour with Trump's support base, as he's no longer looking to run for high office.)

derxa · 20/01/2021 20:55

borntobequiet · 20/01/2021 20:58

That’s on the same lines as Brad Pitt is older than Nigel Farage!

What?! I think Farage is older than me. To me he looks like an old fogey. And I’m in my late 60s!

borntobequiet · 20/01/2021 21:05

@CaveMum

I was in the car driving back from nursery pickup listening to BBC Five Live. They had a linguistics professor from George Washington University appraising the speech (for delivery, not context). He said he’d give him a B for that one, he said he thought President Biden was not a great public speaker, that he used too many colloquialisms and repeated himself. However he did say that of course there’s more to being President than making speeches.
I thought the speech was perfectly pitched for the occasion and the audience and any colloquialisms and repetition part of that. Biden is good at sounding folksy, friendly, authoritative and serious simultaneously.
PullTheBricksDown · 20/01/2021 21:09

Wasn't there a rumour around election day 2016 that the W Bushes had gone to vote, but had put their crosses in the box for all the Republicans also on the paper, at local and state level, but left the presidential vote boxes blank? They seemed to want it to be known at that point they hadn't actually voted for him.

Mittens030869 · 20/01/2021 21:12

@PullTheBricksDown I think you're right, I'd forgotten all about that. But it was always clear that there was no love lost between Trump and Bush obviously.

ListeningQuietly · 20/01/2021 21:17

Derxa
There are several regular WM posters who are very VERY religious
but UK religion and
tithe based evangelism are not the same thing

Pullthe
Split ticket voting is entirely normal in the USA

Farage is 56. Being a right-wing twerp seems to cause premature ageing!
