I found a half-bottle of champagne when clearing out a cupboard a few days ago.

Usually, I'd regard a half-bottle as a pointless object, but as I have no-one to share it with, it's fine. I can celebrate appropriately and not end up with a blinding headache.

He couldn't even say the word Biden. I will admit I didn't watch all of it, but 'I want you to know that the movement we began has only just started' was chilling in my opinion.

Still.... the fact it is the very last address he will make as POTUS is enough for me.

It's displaced the earworm I woke up with, of "Bye bye mTrumpie" to the tune of "Bye bye ebola".

(I hope one day to be singing the latter as "Bye bye corona", but alas that's unlikely to disappear 100%. Still, having a grown up in the White House is a necessary first step to mitigation in the US.)

I had fantasies of him still being aboard the aircraft as it ceases to be AF1, and the pilot opening a sealed envelope of orders from the new President with a new destination.

But clearly one of his henchmen or women had thought of that possibility, too. Bah! Oh well. Anything that gets him out of the way sooner.

Also, not having watched anything Trump has had to say for the past 4 years, I wasn't about to watch his farewell video, but, reading about it, another thing I'm wondering about is whether all the domestic security services have coordinated and are on top of the possibility of more riots all over the country and in particular during the inauguration ceremony today? They're doing fine with catching the people involved in 6th January domestic terrorism, but are they sufficiently on the ball to prevent something terrible happening today? They historically seem to be wise after the event, having the relevant information in hand but not acting on it (cf 9/11), which worries me.

You never know. Sometimes flights are delayed for technical reasons.

He needs to be locked up. However, can’t see it happening as there are so many Americans who have believed his lies.

I don't think they are feeling the love for him as they did. They will turn on him at some point, the cracks are appearing already

I have Sky news on, and there was a guy a little while back answering the Sky news questions about the practicalities of Trump setting up his own tv channel to keep reaching his followers. The depressing answer was that it was felt that it would be likely that Trump would have this as a consideration and that it would either be an online platform (own website?) or in conjunction with an existing channel.

Trumps leaving speech is chilling. There are too many people who are still under his spell. As much as this change of president is something I am really looking forwards to, i just have this nagging feeling it is going to get worse before better in terms of Trump and his nonsense. He really is a rat backed into a corner, and they are the most dangerous.

I wonder if so many of his supporters really support Trump or more that he offered them confirmation of their beliefs.
Many of the people storming the Capitol and causing problems throughout the country were people already in militia and in far-right groups who have been feeling supported and justified.
Others seem to me to be more like, ahem and ironically, sheeple, who have been affected by group dynamics and confirmation bias.

I think it is that confirmation bias aspect that concerns me most. It means as long as trump keep spouting what they want to hear he will still have followers. And the fact that he has already proven that he can wind them up and watch them go... means that there is potential for things to be taken further than people might be willing to face.

I really hope this fear is found to be unfounded when looking back.
