Dog poo-ing on our garden every morning and evening. AIBU to say something?

We live in a quiet area with just three houses in a sort of cul de sac. We are part of a small estate but at the bottom of it. Nobody comes down here unless they live here or are delivering something really.

However there is a cut through at the top and every morning and evening for the past week, a woman has started appearing from this cut through and walking past our house with her large dog. And every morning and evening, this dog is doing a poo on my front garden.

It cocks it's leg on my bushes and had a wee and then settles down for a poo. And yes - she does stand there watching and picks it up

The reason I know? We have security cameras. The reason I've not said anything to her yet? I have annoyingly either been asleep/ in the shower/ in the garage/ out shopping. Nearly managed it this morning but by the time I'd opened my front door, she was turning the corner and I wasn't about to screech!

So ... onto my AIBU. My DH thinks that as she's picking it up then meh, not a massive deal. I think differently - I don't want my front lawn used as a dog toilet and I think it's bad manners to allow your dog to do this. Once I sort of get - but this is now becoming a pattern.

AIBU to literally stake out my camera notifications today and ensure I can get to my front door and ask her to stop immediately? Or just ignore it?

@Daisysflowers it's reassuring to see this - and so many others saying the same. I'd be the same with a dog... my dog would categorically not be allowed to shit in others gardens

And its 20% off today.
Buy one, dress it up, sit in a deck chair on your lawn holding a sign that says "keep your shitting dog off my land"

Oversize · 18/01/2021 11:05

It's not ok. I would let my dog do it. Go and ask her to stop but start politely. There's every chance it'll damage your lawn over time.

steppemum · 18/01/2021 11:05

It really isn't hard to work out if something is a front garden. There is a road nearus with lots of grass in front of people's houses and no fences. It is pretty clear they are gardens.

And while it isn't that easy to move a dog once they have started to squat, it is perfectly possible, unless they are a great dane.

But you kind of need to be more observant and catch them before they squat. And the weeing isn't OK either.

Thehawki · 18/01/2021 11:07

When you first posted I must have missed the fact that it was very clearly a garden. I'm that case her letting the dog run all the way up your garden is rude. I thought you were describing a verge that could have been either, I was obviously mistaken! Yes she's being rude, but I'd be nice about it as people are more willing to respond. Obviously if that doesn't work you will need to be more forceful. Start taking photos if you have to. To have a dog go right up to your garden on a long lead is weird behaviour you are right.

Lou98 · 18/01/2021 11:08

I have two dogs and don't even let them walk over other peoples gardens, fenced or not, never mind stop to do the toilet!

YADNBU OP! Surprised at the people that think it's okay, it's private property!

Shamoo · 18/01/2021 11:08

Jeez, I have a dog and would never ever let it do this. You can control where your dog goes by having it on a lead and pulling it away if it tries to go in somebody’s garden. Horrible thing to do.

Mmsnet101 · 18/01/2021 11:11

Yes it's rude but as she's picking it up I'm not sure I'd say anything. This is why we have a small front fence, I'd suggest the same or some large planters to mark off the boundary.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 18/01/2021 11:11

I'd be so embarrassed if my dog regularly shat on someone's garden. Shame on the folk who think it's fine - I'm mortified for you.

hopeinavial · 18/01/2021 11:11

I think a very low picket or decorate chain fence, no higher than one foot, would make it clear that this is private property. I think people don't always think about this if you are next to a public footpath etc. Then she would know her dog and/or she was on private property.
Demarcate your property and see how unreasonable this woman is willing to be.

LastTrainEast · 18/01/2021 11:13

She has no right to use your property for her dog toilet. You should catch her at it and tell her to stop.

"Tell her you understand she can't really decide where her dog poops"

That's the dog owners problem. One she should have given some thought to before buying an animal that she can't control.

If she had to have a dog she could let it use her own garden. Dog owners don't want the smell and mess near where they live of course so take the dog as far away as they can and let someone else have it.

MustBeTheWine · 18/01/2021 11:13

Once or twice it's fine, obviously you don't have much control over when your dog shits but to allow it to become a habit for her dog is absolutely her doing. My dog shits on the exact same place on our walk, it's nowhere near anyones garden but at one point he did start shitting right in front of the entace to a kids playground, when he started doing it pretty much every time we passed the park we started crossing the road before we reached the park. I'd be pissed off too OP.

willowmelangell · 18/01/2021 11:14

So tempted to shout, 'Oy, gerrof my land!' followed up with a SuperSoaker(other water guns available)
Seriously though, shocking behaviour on dog owners part. Laminate sign or bang on your window.

inquietant · 18/01/2021 11:14

Clearly not ok. Whether you can do anything I'm not sure, but that is fucking gross.

I fucking hate dog owners like that.

FlowersAreBeautiful · 18/01/2021 11:16

Of course you're NBU - it's private property. You can get signs to put in your garden. Our neighbour has one so I'm guessing other people have let their dogs use their garden too

LucyLime · 18/01/2021 11:16

@TodgerStrunk GrinGrintempting!

Again... I don't want to put a fence up. I can't anyway - to reiterate (again) we don't have the sort of garden that lends itself to a small fence

And should someone really have to spend money on fences and planters that they don't want because one rude dog Walker thinks it's ok to use a very very clearly privately owned garden as their dogs toilet?

So no, the fence can't happen.

Yanbu but I think this is a case of what you don't know doesn't hurt you. Personally think security camerascan do more harm than good!

LucyLime · 18/01/2021 11:18

I'll report back later if I manage to catch her. I'm a woman on a mission now! And I won't be 'being kind' to her as such, no. She knows exactly what she is doing. However I also won't be rude - I'll be matter of fact and tell her politely that she's to stop allowing her dog to do it

OP posts:
LucyLime · 18/01/2021 11:20

@RedHelenB I think I'd rather know that a dog was shitting in the garden twice a day but that's just me. Maybe you don't mind so much but I don't want my kids stepping in whatever shit has been left behind

billy1966 · 18/01/2021 11:20

Unbelievably rude and completely CF territory using your garden.

I would be poised with my phone and photograph her.

So what if she's picking it up.
Some may remain.
What if you had a child playing out there?

Completely unacceptable.🙄

babybunny123 · 18/01/2021 11:20

It is bad manners for her to allow this, the dog has now marked its territory and will do it there all the time. Make a little sign stating please keep your dogs off my garden and stick it in the grass, she will soon get the message hopefully, if not you will have to confront the stupid woman.

Yohoheaveho · 18/01/2021 11:20

put a sign-up and if that doesn't stop her upload footage of her dog doing it right by the sign

Twinkie01 · 18/01/2021 11:22

It's wrong for dogs to be on your property at all and I'm shocked at people who say they pull their dogs back when they look like they're going to go to the toilet! Why do you think it's acceptable for your dog to encroach on others property. It's no different to a human walking willy nilly over someone else's garden.

Be firm OP, not only should it not be crapping on your garden, it shouldn't even be walking on it.

callmeadoctor · 18/01/2021 11:22

I would just stick a sign up temporarily for a couple of days, Im sure that would do the trick. Just a laminated A4 paper stuck to a piece of scrap wood would do.

LuaDipa · 18/01/2021 11:23

This is absolutely not ok. I have occasionally been caught out by one of mine on someone’s front garden and I was mortified. I certainly would not allow it to happen twice. I would definitely have a word.
