Dog poo-ing on our garden every morning and evening. AIBU to say something?

We live in a quiet area with just three houses in a sort of cul de sac. We are part of a small estate but at the bottom of it. Nobody comes down here unless they live here or are delivering something really.

However there is a cut through at the top and every morning and evening for the past week, a woman has started appearing from this cut through and walking past our house with her large dog. And every morning and evening, this dog is doing a poo on my front garden.

It cocks it's leg on my bushes and had a wee and then settles down for a poo. And yes - she does stand there watching and picks it up

The reason I know? We have security cameras. The reason I've not said anything to her yet? I have annoyingly either been asleep/ in the shower/ in the garage/ out shopping. Nearly managed it this morning but by the time I'd opened my front door, she was turning the corner and I wasn't about to screech!

So ... onto my AIBU. My DH thinks that as she's picking it up then meh, not a massive deal. I think differently - I don't want my front lawn used as a dog toilet and I think it's bad manners to allow your dog to do this. Once I sort of get - but this is now becoming a pattern.

AIBU to literally stake out my camera notifications today and ensure I can get to my front door and ask her to stop immediately? Or just ignore it?

Hmm.. I think she isn't necessarily doing anything wrong if your garden is right near the path. I would go out of you have the opportunity and be polite about it. Tell her you understand she can't really decide where her dog poops but can she move the dog onto the path so he's not poopong in your garden.

After that if she hasn't stopped, it might be time to put in a very low fence as a deterrent. As a dog owner I see both sides, as I'm assuming she hasn't even thought about it being your garden, so don't see much reason to go all guns blazing. But it's your garden so I would also do as you asked once I realised.

ZoeTurtle · 18/01/2021 10:33

She picks it up. Plenty of animals piss and shit in your garden, and they don't clean up. YABU

TheABC · 18/01/2021 10:35

Another vote here for a fence.

LucyLime · 18/01/2021 10:36

I don't want to put a small fence up tbh. It would look very odd. And there's no pavement as such outside my house. It's also very clear it's someone's garden. She is letting it do it's first and last toileting there from what I can see

But interesting that as a dog owner yourself you'd sort of think this was ok to do?

So far then we think it's ok for dog owners to allow their dogs to relieve themselves in other peoples garden as a matter of course? Interesting

I don't want to put a fence up, to reiterate. Should I have to?

Unless she is allowing her dog to massively wander on your lawn then Yabu to confront her.

You can get little signs or maybe put up a small fence at the boundary between your garden and the road if it bothers you

ShatnersWig · 18/01/2021 10:39

Astonished to see first response is "I think she isn't necessarily doing anything wrong if your garden is right near the path"

Of course it's wrong to do anything repeatedly on someone else's garden, whether it's your dog crapping on it or you parking your car on it. Cleaning it up after is irrelevant - it shouldn't be happening in the first place. Presumably you'd have no problem other dog owners crapping on your garden Thehawki?

I'd have to think said dog owner was hard of thinking if she "hasn't even thought about it being your garden".

LucyLime · 18/01/2021 10:40

@Fallox yes the dog is coming right into the garden. We don't have a pavement outside - it's a wide road that is only used if you live here/deliveries.

I would hate that too and have to say something.
The dog should be shitting in her garden.

Crocky · 18/01/2021 10:41

I have a dog and would not consider letting her walk on someone’s garden, let alone poo and wee!

Godimabitch · 18/01/2021 10:41

As a dog owner, it's absolutely not ok to let your dog wee or poo on other peoples property, whether you pick it up or not. If it's clearly a front garden she's bang out order. I'd never let my dog do that.

I'd go out and explain it's your property and you dont want her dog using it as a toilet.

luckylavender · 18/01/2021 10:42

I don't think this is ok and I would be annoyed too. It's your garden.

BoJoHoNo · 18/01/2021 10:42

It's bad manners and dog urine can damage bushes, so it would be fair to have a polite word with the owner. They tend to go back to the same spot each time too. It wouldn't occur to me to let my dog do this; it's like people who let their dogs pee on cars parked on the street, move them along to a more suitable/less damaging place.

shitinmyhandsandclap · 18/01/2021 10:42

I wouldn't be happy with this either OP and I would definitely be talking to her, can you put up a small sign with private garden on it or something

LucyLime · 18/01/2021 10:43

Like I said, the once I understand. I've walked dogs before for friends and was horrified when one did a big poo in a garden - my fault as I'd let her wander in there absentmindedly. Wouldn't do it again as I felt embarrassed!

It's interesting how some people think that their dogs can roam on other peoples property and shit all over it though.

I have a dog and always pull her back onto the path when I see she’s setting up to do a poo on someone’s garden. Just because you don’t have a fence doesn’t mean you’d like dogs pooing there. Even if the owners do clean it up. I bet if you stand outside on your lawn she won’t even let the dog do it.

RedMarauder · 18/01/2021 10:44

If the dog is coming into the garden put a temporary border then speak to her to tell her dog is not welcome there.

LucyLime · 18/01/2021 10:44

I'm not going out all guns blazes but I'm going to watch my cameras later on! It can be like a new lockdown hobby!

And then I will go out and say ' please don't allow your dog to keep using my garden as a toilet, we see you every day on the security camera' and hopefully she will just apologise and stop doing it

I have dogs. This is terrible behaviour. I feel bad enough if they do outside someone's house on the pavement and try and move them to the gutter.

LucyLime · 18/01/2021 10:45

But I don't want to put a temporary border up? And my garden doesn't lend itself to that anyway. It's actually 2 gardens - separated by a path. The dog isn't fussy though - it's using both Grin

Hoppinggreen · 18/01/2021 10:46

I don’t let my dog into anyone’s garden, fenced or not
Her picking it up is irrelevant, the dog shouldn’t be there (assuming it’s obvious a private garden)

PPAK2 · 18/01/2021 10:46

I would never allow my dog to go and poo in someones garden, it's such bad manners. I don't think you'd be unreasonable to say something.

Whoateallthestuffingballs · 18/01/2021 10:47

I am a dog-owner and wouldn't let my dog do this, so I say YANBU. We've all been caught out where our dogs do their business where they shouldn't, but I have always been mortified and apologetic and then I make sure it doesn't happen again!

SmellyPooHead · 18/01/2021 10:47

Very bad manners to allow her dog to do that. Yes I'd say something

GingersHaveSoulsToo · 18/01/2021 10:47

I have a dog and would not let him on to other peoples' gardens. I don't let him wander on to them never mind poo. Spare grass and tree sections/verges not specific to a property yes (although always pick up after him), peoples' gardens NO!

Really surprised people think this is okay.
