To be angry about the names of these bikes in Halfords?

In Halfords this week getting essential car stuff...and had a look at the bikes. I was a bit taken aback to see these ladies bike names from the Apollo brand. Entice & Virtue. There was also Jewel.

AIBU ? If so, any suggestions who to shout to about it

The male equivalents were slant, phase and evade.

No you should be angry. It's prejudice isn't it? Woman= entice (slut) or virtue (saint). Long long history behind those particular sexist stereotypes.

I think you just picked out the worst ones. I looked at the women's bikes in Halfords today too - seem to remember valour, excel, vengeance

Meh, ISWYM but I can't bring myself to get annoyed about this.

The thought of a teenage girl cycling a bike with "Entice" written on it makes me feel a bit bleurgh. Synonyms of entice include allure and secude . Virtue is no better.

Those aren't "feminine" words; they are societal expectations of female people.

How depressing that this kind of sexism still exists. There must be real people working in Halfords marketing department who seriously thought of the names Entice and Virtue, and presumably none of their colleagues laughed or raised an eyebrow.

Also weird that so many people think it's only ok to post about your most serious worry, and then not during a pandemic.

I wouldn't buy a bike that had VIRTUE on the side.

There is a yacht company called Vertue and a luxury phone company called Vertu ( intended to sound like “virtue” but be protectable as trademarks).

Entice and virtue are awful names for women's bikes. Doesn't sit well with me.

Turning back to the positives...cycling is totally fabulous and I would encourage everyone to get on their bike when you can fresh air, useful and fun. The positive thing in lockdown 1 was there being less traffic on the roads and cleaner air - you could really tell the difference. No such soul- salving exercise in this difficult time with the dark, rain and cold . We all have many important and tough things to think about, I was after an view of AIBU and I certainly got it.

For the record I have a matt black road bike (Ruby) and a blue trek ladies hybrid (No name, just a number - 7300) so no new bikes needed. As for being in Halfords in the first place, I was filling 5 mins whilst the assistant did my replacement number plate !

I think that is the problem with anyone who doesn’t think that everyday sexism is a problem; there is a distinct lack of thinking going on.

It's tiresome isn't it. Very thin end of the wedge. Another good reason to avoid Apollo bikes. Go for a Raleigh.
