To be angry about the names of these bikes in Halfords?

In Halfords this week getting essential car stuff...and had a look at the bikes. I was a bit taken aback to see these ladies bike names from the Apollo brand. Entice & Virtue. There was also Jewel.

AIBU ? If so, any suggestions who to shout to about it

The male equivalents were slant, phase and evade.

118 votes and 66% of mainly women think yabu. That is pretty depressing.

Gobbycop · 16/01/2021 19:31

You're getting angry over the names Halfords have called their bikes.

😂

WiseOwlRelaxing · 16/01/2021 19:31

@HostaFireAndIce

Was Evade the man’s version of Entice?
oh good question! Shock
Hangingover · 16/01/2021 19:31

I love that they named a men's one "phase" Grin

Splodgetastic · 16/01/2021 19:31

@SunshineandShudders It’s not just frame size. Ladies have longer legs in proportion to body.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/01/2021 19:31

And the thing is, the little everyday things add up and build like a snowball. OPs example, builders wolf whistling women, men saying perry comments to school girls in their uniforms, page 3.
Then, when something big happens we look back and see all the little things we were being hysterical about, and see they were ok at the time and we can see how we've got to where we are ...

Baycob · 16/01/2021 19:32

@FoxyTheFox

Food can be enticing, a jewel is precious expensive and beautiful, men can be virtuous.

EnolanotAlone · 16/01/2021 19:32

I have a halfords special, Vixen subservient it is an absolute dream bike, did everything I asked. Better than the masculine version 🤫

SunshineandShudders · 16/01/2021 19:32

The thing is, it does make a difference to sales. They don't do it for fun, they have years of research on what sells. For example, before deciding all bikes would unisex, the serious cycling brands stopped selling "large" bikes for women and renamed them tall, because women didn't like to buy a large.

lljkk · 16/01/2021 19:33

What is Entice supposed to mean?
Given it's a predominantly a kids' brand, that seems like a spectacularly bad decision.

I imagine I'd quite fancy Evade!!

Thedogscollar · 16/01/2021 19:33

Hmm Have you heard what's really going on out there???

sqirrelfriends · 16/01/2021 19:33

Yanbu, it's sexist. The men's bikes aren't named after perceived attributes the rider might have. I would love to see the male equivalent on sale, maybe something like the below:

Hunky
Moral
Rugged

Yes and they've accounted for that but the serious cycling brands no longer sell women's and men's bikes, just bikes that fit.

mswales · 16/01/2021 19:34

urrrgh classic example of under the radar everyday sexism, so annoying

BuntysTwinkle · 16/01/2021 19:35

I think that if that's all you have to complain about, I'd love your life

Where exactly did she say that's all she has to complain about? I don't see it...

TroysMammy · 16/01/2021 19:36

As a teenager I had a Halfords Easy Rider. Until someone said "ooh Troys is an Easy Rider". I was so embarrassed I got a brillo pad and scrubbed the sticker off.

Worst · 16/01/2021 19:38

@JazzyGeoff

Yeah I think they're a bit crap tbh.

I totally get why to some people it's a non problem, but for me, letting this kind of sexist nonsense, whilst seemingly unimportant continue, just allows everyday sexism to pervade.

^ this

I never understand how so many women are not bothered by low level misogyny, usually because they “are too busy dealing with real problems” (and yet still have time to post on NM).

Shout away OP!

Thewithesarehere · 16/01/2021 19:38

Someone in marketing needs a serious warning. Complain OP.

Splodgetastic · 16/01/2021 19:39

@SunshineandShudders I disagree. I have a Cube,
which is a pretty good make, and they have a WLS (woman-like series). The annoying thing is that the women’s bikes are more expensive than the equivalent male frames. DH has a full carbons frame for the same price as my alu bike which just has carbon forks.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 16/01/2021 19:41

This shit happening is indeed depressing however, if I'm honest I expect it. I have no delusions of how society still views and treats women.

What's even more depressing is how many women insist it's not a problem on every single thread.

CoalCraft · 16/01/2021 19:41

Serious question - what's the difference between a man's bike and a woman's bike? Are they practically different? Cause if not, then if the name of the bike is important to you, just get one with a name you like

BiBabbles · 16/01/2021 19:41

Entice is a weird one. Virtue and Jewel don't really both me, but I can see why Virtue on a bike being advertised as a ladies bike could be questionable.

Personally, having looked on the website - I'm kinda confused what difference there is between the women and men's bikes. All of them are mountain bikes other than Virtue which is a 'hybrid' & as they all come in different frame sizes, it's kinda feels to me like adult versions of a pink and blue toys in a store.

rwalker · 16/01/2021 19:41

Entice, Virtue and Jewel I don't really think of as gender specific.
But you have to remember ladies bike are complete different to mens they have no crossbar so common sense would tell you a product designed ONLY for women why wouldn't you give it a gender specific name .

Dahlietta · 16/01/2021 19:41

Yes and they've accounted for that but the serious cycling brands no longer sell women's and men's bikes, just bikes that fit.

But I need a woman’s bike or I won’t have anywhere to put my skirts and petticoats! 😱

Ohbuggeroffcovid · 16/01/2021 19:41

It’s like Maserati or is it a TVR that is called a chimera or something equally twatty and unnecessary.

My ex had both. He was a massive twat.
