To be angry about the names of these bikes in Halfords?

In Halfords this week getting essential car stuff...and had a look at the bikes. I was a bit taken aback to see these ladies bike names from the Apollo brand. Entice & Virtue. There was also Jewel.

AIBU ? If so, any suggestions who to shout to about it

The male equivalents were slant, phase and evade.

They sound like rejected team names off The Apprentice.

Coulddowithanap · 16/01/2021 19:42

How are the names sexist?

At least the bikes aren't pink!

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 16/01/2021 19:43

My DH has a bike called a Kona Stinky which I always thought was very apt Grin

I get where you are coming from OP - Entice and Virtue are stereotypical shite.

Balhammom · 16/01/2021 19:44

I’m assuming this is a joke post.

If, however, you’re being serious, grow up.

Cherrysoup · 16/01/2021 19:44

I’ve got the Jewel (brand new, on eBay cos my knee can’t take it, crutches and bikes don’t mix, £50!!) and only got it because it’s purple. I’m so shallow I didn’t check anything but the size and spec. Could not give a shit about the name.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 16/01/2021 19:44

EnolanotAlone Vixen Subservient? That’s the actual name?!

Mamanyt · 16/01/2021 19:46

Well, I agree that the names are rather...horrid...however, I think that being actually angry about them is way over the top. It's one of those "shake your head, sigh and move on" moments. I wouldn't have wasted another moment thinking about the silly things people name products. Life is too short.

ClutchingMyPearlsAppropriately · 16/01/2021 19:47

This made me laugh. The names are so ridiculous it has to be deliberate. I'd just think someone's trolling the public because it seems like such an obviously low hanging fruit and reactions like yours may just be what they're looking for to sell.

Ignore. Delete. Erase. Move on.

Doggybiccys · 16/01/2021 19:48

YANBU OP. It’s everyday sexism that perpetuates our patriarchal society. But you will get heaps of posts telling you that you are unreasonable, worry about real problems etc. Sometimes women are their own worst enemy.

Choccyp1g · 16/01/2021 19:49

Ignore, Delete, Erase, Move On Good names for bikes.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/01/2021 19:49

I know, I have always thought 'Snickers' to be rather inappropriate under the circumstances, if you know what I mean.

... and there's the Loin Bar, what that all
about ?

MiriamMargo · 16/01/2021 19:50

I dont think its even worth a thought !

BlahBlub · 16/01/2021 19:51

YANBU to be annoyed. Virgin or Whore - it’s the age old dichotomy that is being presented to girls as their only roles to choose from. Entice or Virtue? Those choices make me want to gag.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/01/2021 19:52

Don't ever go to Ikea, OP.

BilboBercow · 16/01/2021 19:54

They all sound like really shit Gladiator names

BiBabbles · 16/01/2021 19:55

All the bikes listed look to have a crossbar, there is very little difference in the frames between the men's and women's bikes to me though someone who knows more about bikes may be able to spot a different I can't.

Looking at Halford's website, to get a bike without a crossbar or a lower step-over looks to cost quite a bit more than these bikes, relegated to some of the electric, hybrids, and the "classic" bikes.

peak2021 · 16/01/2021 19:56

How really 'essential' was your visit to Halfords that also gave you time to notice this, stupid as two of these names are (in my opinion), and be indoors for longer than absolutely necessary?

museumum · 16/01/2021 19:56

Bike names are shite. Women’s even more so. I ride a giant “intrigue”. Wtf??
But yes, there is a issue with gender stereotypes in cycling, and sex discrimination. Call them out on Twitter or something if you want (but this is barely the tip of the iceberg, personally I save my energy for positively supporting women in the cycling industry doing good things, as it’s my hobby and I don’t want sucked down by the negativity).

percheron67 · 16/01/2021 19:56

Don't you think there is enough to fret about at the moment?!

CalmConfident · 16/01/2021 19:58

Maybe I should have said “surprised, perturbed and disappointed” rather than “angry”. I think it is important to notice and challenge the drip-drip of sexism and sexual language in the everyday.

People do need different bike types / options due to body geometry and how you want to use your bike, it was the naming (I did not even think about colour) that caught my eye.

CrazyToast · 16/01/2021 20:00

I had a Raleigh Princess

Lostinacloud · 16/01/2021 20:01

Dear Halfords, from henceforth I would like all bikes renamed BikeyMcBikeFace so as not to offend all those who like to get worked up and offended by EVERYTHING Hmm

hopscotchz · 16/01/2021 20:01

Aren’t the seats also different for men and women? I thought that was the difference!

Balhammom · 16/01/2021 20:02

Perish the thought but some women/ girls prefer feminine names. Dare I mention, my DD even wanted a pink bike.

I’m sad that people like OP feel that their views, which as this thread shows are the minority, trump everyone else’s.
