To be angry about the names of these bikes in Halfords?

In Halfords this week getting essential car stuff...and had a look at the bikes. I was a bit taken aback to see these ladies bike names from the Apollo brand. Entice & Virtue. There was also Jewel.

AIBU ? If so, any suggestions who to shout to about it

The male equivalents were slant, phase and evade.

My bike was a Raleigh Palm Beach, I’m trying to think of something to get offended about, but I’m sure somebody will find something offensive about the name!

ImBoredAgain · 16/01/2021 20:40

You seem to have too much spare time. When is this offended over everything going to end Confused

Buddytheelf85 · 16/01/2021 20:41

Virtue/entice. A real coincidence (or not) that it matches Madonna/whore.

A woman can be desired but not respected, or respected but not desired.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/01/2021 20:41

@BiBabbles

All the bikes listed look to have a crossbar, there is very little difference in the frames between the men's and women's bikes to me though someone who knows more about bikes may be able to spot a different I can't.

Looking at Halford's website, to get a bike without a crossbar or a lower step-over looks to cost quite a bit more than these bikes, relegated to some of the electric, hybrids, and the "classic" bikes.

Body proportions are usually different between men and women and the undercarriage vs saddle interface needs to be considered. So the frame angles and lengths are usually different.

Is the mens 'evade' bike aimed at those who go cycling to hide from their domestic responsibilities?

TurquoiseDress · 16/01/2021 20:45

YANBU!

I was having a look on Halfords website recently and the one called Entice caught my attention with the price being around the max of what I'd be willing to pay.

However, in the end the name just put me right off! I don't want to ride around on a bike called Entice! Hmm

Eckhart · 16/01/2021 20:48

Entice for women, and evade for men.

And people think this is not a representation of sexist attitudes?

WaltzesWithSnobs · 16/01/2021 20:48
  1. TIL that bikes have names.
  2. Yes, they are stupid names. Suggest that bike manufacturers cease naming bikes rejected team names from The Apprentice (great description from PP) and just name their bikes actual names like 'The Jenny' or 'The Sandra' for female bikes, 'The Miguel' or 'The Matteo' for male bikes and 'The Chris' or 'The Sam' for gender neutral bikes.

@BilboBercow

Grin
Vona1a · 16/01/2021 20:50

Yes yr been very unreasonable, take a step back a deep breathe & look at your self. Yr winding yourself up over a bike name & getting caught up in snowflake generation. I rode a chopper FFS

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/01/2021 20:52

Christ on a badly named bike - please tell me where did OP indicate this was the only thing she had to worry about?

Eckhart · 16/01/2021 20:53

For those saying they're just names of bikes, so it doesn't matter, would you support the company if they called one of their bikes 'Get lost, customers', and another one 'Cock sucker'?

Because they're just names, aren't they?

Buddytheelf85 · 16/01/2021 20:55

I think that is the problem with anyone who doesn’t think that everyday sexism is a problem; there is a distinct lack of thinking going on.

But if I act like I don’t care about it, the boys might think I’m cool and like me?

cushioncovers · 16/01/2021 20:57

I rode a Chopper ffs

Yeah so did my brother in 1979. Times have changed.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 16/01/2021 20:57

@endlesscraziness

I think that if that's all you have to complain about, I'd love your life
10th post in, and its MN bingo. And I don't know what the deleted posts were so it could have happened before then. Probably did. I'm sure OP has other things to worry about. You aren't her, so you don't know Hmm YANBU . It's sexist shiz, of the drip drip type.
Funnyface1 · 16/01/2021 20:59

They sound like cheap perfumes. Unless they were called something much worse I really wouldn't get worked up.

BillMasheen · 16/01/2021 21:00

Women often don’t see sexism same was fish don’t see water.

I totally agree OP. I have 99 problems... and casual bullshit sexism IS one of them. We are finally getting bike manufacturers to move away from plastering EVERY women’s bike with pink and flowers. Knowing how much effort goes into naming and branding, it would be nice to think someone would have spotted this. (And I’ve got the Avail, bloody love it)

Blimey...all these women happy to not only accept sexist stereotyping, but also berate another woman for calling it out... Confused

Yup.

Littleposh · 16/01/2021 21:07

Just when you think people have run out of things to be offended by

GreenlandTheMovie · 16/01/2021 21:08

I could never be enticed by a bike called an Entice. Or a Virtue - I'd never live up to it.

I want a Thor, or a Zeus. Maybe a Sword. Or even a Fang. I could quite see myself going quite fast on an Apollo Fang.

Entice makes me think of a very heavy, cheaply made bike designed to appeal to some imaginary female market which values girly names over value for money decent components and quality.

FailingMotherhood · 16/01/2021 21:09

For those saying they're just names of bikes, so it doesn't matter, would you support the company if they called one of their bikes 'Get lost, customers', and another one 'Cock sucker'?

Cove used to do bikes called, and I shit you not, STD, Hooker, G-Spot, Hustler, Stiffee, Foreplay MX, Sanchez, Hummer, and Handjob...

I get where the OP is coming from, but in truth I'd be more bothered about the fact Apollos are shit bikes, and it's no surprise that their names are as crap and outdated as their components.

The Juliana bikes are great they were set up by Santa Cruz and mtbing champ Juliana Furtado. There's the Furtado, the Joplin, the Maverick, etc.

StillGoingToWork · 16/01/2021 21:10

Mine is a Tern Link D7 folding bike in grey. Boring name. I call in The Pain In The Arse I need a bigger saddle

chipsandgin · 16/01/2021 21:11

The men’s ones are hilarious. I imagine the longer versions are ‘evade my responsibilities at home by poncing about looking like a bellend in lycra’ and ‘a phase I’m gong through as I’m a middle aged tool who is useless in bed’....

As for the women’s - some marketing twat has definitely missed the mark with them & yep they’re proper eye rollingly backwards sexist, but all it’ll do is backfire on them so hopefully the idiot that came up with the names might not get far in their career (you’d hope!).

CoffeeWithCheese · 16/01/2021 21:11

@CrazyToast

I had a Raleigh Princess
I had a Raleigh Chopper. I was EPIC Had the little bread tags saved up for months to attach to the bike spokes and lolly sticks tried to be put in the tyre treads to make it sound like a motorbike (well, like a kid's bike with bread bag ties and lolly sticks shoved in it really but to me, I was the king of my street - which was basically The World)

They all sound like shitty deodorant and shower gel gift sets to be honest. Impulse Entice and Lynx Evade.
