To be angry about the names of these bikes in Halfords?

CalmConfident · 16/01/2021 18:50

In Halfords this week getting essential car stuff...and had a look at the bikes. I was a bit taken aback to see these ladies bike names from the Apollo brand. Entice & Virtue. There was also Jewel.

AIBU ? If so, any suggestions who to shout to about it

The male equivalents were slant, phase and evade.

So how does anything change and get better if no challenges casual sexism?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/01/2021 19:18

You weren't in for essential car stuff. You were in for a browse and bought some screenwash. Just own it 🤣

Cornishmumofone · 16/01/2021 19:19

The female equivalent of Giant Defy is Liv Avail. I agree that the ones you've seen are ridiculous

Imissmoominmama · 16/01/2021 19:19

My bike is called Jake the Snake. That’s honestly it’s real name; it’s printed on the crossbar. Jake is a brilliant bike.

Those names in Halfords are shit.

sashagabadon · 16/01/2021 19:19

They are pretty crap names for girls bikes , virtue Hmm entice Confused
I don’t think a female “bike namer “ would have chosen them. The male bike names are equally crap.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 16/01/2021 19:21

Jeez Louise....

sashagabadon · 16/01/2021 19:22

And I think you should email the halford customer service or whatever. Not shout at the Halfords shop staff. But yes it is worth mentioning I think. I wouldn’t buy a bike called entice for my 9 year old daughter

Splodgetastic · 16/01/2021 19:22

Evade sounds like you are a petty drug dealer, so all the names are bad! I had a bike called a “Vixen” and more recently a “Valour”, which was a Halford’s ladies bike-shaped object.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/01/2021 19:22

It's entirely possible this isn't the biggest thing OP has to worry about. I'm quite sure a huge % of posters this evening will absolutely not be posting about such topics.

Jake the Snake is an awesome bike name.

hopscotchz · 16/01/2021 19:22

I got the Jewel one Shock

Every day sexism is a thing for a reason.

I get why you're angry. It's stupid bullshit born out of female stereotypes and prejudice against them.

RainbowDasher · 16/01/2021 19:24

Every time there is a thread about everyday sexism the "cool" women who "couldn't care less" come out in force. Of course there are bigger issues to worry about. You could say that about most things. But this doesn't exist in a vacuum. It exists in a world that is built on misogyny. It's death by a thousand cuts and this is one more little cut. Those names are awful and sexist. YANBU.

XenoBitch · 16/01/2021 19:24

I can not get worked up about this. It is a bike. I have a Halfords one called Elyse. It undoubabtly a women's bike... has a basket and everything.
There is a bike brand called Kona... years ago, they had a model called 'Humuhumu-nukunuku-a-pua'a Deluxe'

SunshineandShudders · 16/01/2021 19:25

Most brands have stopped doing "ladies" bikes, they just have a wider range of frame sizes. Problem solved .

Pirandello24 · 16/01/2021 19:26

This would really bother me too OP. I'm surprised by the number of people commenting that don't care or think you're being silly. I'm totally with Foxy on this one- all these little, seemingly innocuous gender stereotypes add up and contribute to the way that women are negatively portrayed in today's society. Please do at least email their customer services and flag it up

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/01/2021 19:28

@FoxyTheFox

Why on earth does it matter?

Because its part of the culture of everyday sexism that reminds us we don't live in an equal society and a reminder that the perceived role of women is to be decorative (Jewel), alluring/sexy (Entice), and virginal/pure (Virtue) even when doing something as mundane as exercising.

OP, you can tweet the Everyday Sexism Project about it. They collect examples like this as part of their mission to challenge everyday sexism.

^^ This and the advice to tweet the Everyday Sexism Project is great.
Chicchicchicchiclana · 16/01/2021 19:28

Yanbu. That's revolting! In this fucking day and age!

Baycob · 16/01/2021 19:29

There is a Global pandemic ..... and you are complaining about this.

CheetasOnFajitas · 16/01/2021 19:29

I agree they are shit and it is everyday sexism. “Evade” for blokes is quite funny too though, doesn’t sound like they think much of men either!

Dahlietta · 16/01/2021 19:29

They’re all awful, for different reasons, but I think Phase might be the worst!

CalmConfident · 16/01/2021 19:29

Interesting mix of responses Smile

It was the everyday sexism of it that bugged me and I was not sure who to share it with. There are indeed many more things in life to worry about, but it surprised me.

I was waiting for the assistant to print my replacement number plate and had to kill 5 mins. I did indeed buy screenwash AND a new scraper @Crunchymum Grin

I agree and this poster expresses it very well imo.

It isn't life or death stuff but it's all part of the pervasive sexism that we endure constantly to the point where a lot of people don't even notice it or see it.

I think it's a bit eugh as well.

I think of those three names, I would be put off buying ''entice'' and definitely put off buying 'virtue'.

Jewel would not put me off though.

HostaFireAndIce · 16/01/2021 19:30

Was Evade the man’s version of Entice?

CheetasOnFajitas · 16/01/2021 19:30

There is a global pandemic so people have less to do and more time to think about things like this. There is no law that says we must only voice our most important thoughts.
