...which is a long-winded way of agreeing with you NotaRealLawyer :-)

Minimammoth · 17/01/2021 05:59

Likewise ZZ, I too hope that the thread continues is some form , I have learned a lot, discovered some interesting sources of information and gained insight into American politics. It will be interesting to see what happens to the Trump dynasty.

Igotjelly · 17/01/2021 06:14

I've lurked on these threads since the beginning. They've been a wonderful source of information. It's been so frustrating to see them derailed but certain posters Hmm

Igotjelly · 17/01/2021 06:16

Anyone know what time in the uK the inauguration is? Assuming I'll be able to watch on CNN - dd8 is desperate to watch it too.

JamieLeesCurtains · 17/01/2021 06:23

I read that the inauguration starts at midday eastern time which would be 5pm in the UK, @igotjelly.

Sleipnirthewonderhorse · 17/01/2021 06:55

Officers in Washington DC arrested a Virginia man who tried to pass through a Capitol police checkpoint carrying fake inaugural credentials, a loaded handgun and more than 500 rounds of ammunition.

"[T]he president has told supporters he wants to raise $2 billion for the library — a far greater sum than has been raised for past presidential libraries — and thinks he can collect it in small-dollar donations from his grass-roots supporters."

The problem is, I think he will raise it from grass-root supporters. Maybe not $2 billion but a couple of million at least
borntobequiet · 17/01/2021 07:40

One thing that Trump has demonstrated is that the President, if he wants, can do pretty much anything, however destructive and unconstitutional, which I hope helps Biden realise that he can do similar, albeit constructive and adhering to constitutional norms. Perhaps as well the USA might look at the flaws in the checks and balances in the Constitution, though I suspect that will be forgotten about until the next psychopathic billionaire with designs on exploiting the largest economy in the world to his own ends comes along.

borntobequiet · 17/01/2021 07:42

And it would be nice if it were a wake up call to us in the UK about the problems we have in our own country, but I’m not holding my breath.

Destinysdaughter · 17/01/2021 07:42

Saddened to see this thread being derailed but you've all put up a valiant effort!

Has anyone else received a private message about this thread recently? I have and it was a bit disconcerting, but I've decided just not to engage.

Anyhow, I'd love to know what you all think about the rioters demanding that Trump pardon them? Bloody cheek of it!

boatyardblues · 17/01/2021 07:55

@prettybird

On the Westministender threads, we have an unspoken technique of collectively ignoring those 🐿 🐿🐿 that come and try to derail the discussion. Those Brexit supporters that do genuinely engage are listened to and respected. But the 🐿🐿 get ignored.

It might be worth adopting that here.

This is the highly pertinent advice from the Bunbury threads in FWR about managing disruptive posters. I’m too lazy to format so everything below this paragraph is copied across & I’m reproducing whole, though a couple of paragraphs in the middle do not apply here. The last paragraph is very helpful:

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember there are people out there who would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3944572-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-5?pg=40

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

Historians having to tape together records that Trump tore up
Trump has been cavalier about the law requiring that records be preserved. He has a habit of ripping up documents before tossing them out, forcing White House workers to spend hours taping them back together.

Lweji · 17/01/2021 08:14

Now I'm upset that I didn't receive a private message. Grin

These threads would be less interesting without the occasional, let's say, intruder. As in this case, it made me research a bit more about Biden's past and become more informed, even if the end result wasn't quite as the pp might have intended.

At about this time last year we were discussing potential presidential candidates. It might be worth reading for anyone who thinks we all adore Biden. Grin

Kamala, though, she's perfect. Wink

TheNorthWestPawsage · 17/01/2021 08:14

@lionheart

How about this and he pockets the change?
Oh he'll be pocketing the change all right.

Erm... lock him up?

Roussette · 17/01/2021 08:19

Thanks boatyard that's interesting. I, too, have my theory on this derailing but have more important things to do with my tiny brain than dwell on it. I just want to echo what terrywynne said below. in response to anything....

"But most of us here are discussing politics as they play out right now. When it comes to politicians right now I want to know a) what are their current policies b) where they have changed their stance on an issue, is it part of a trend of flip flopping for personal gain or more nuanced development of ideas and c) how do they compare to other politicians right now?"

Talking about what is happening now, Lauren Broebert has put out a statement. I have to say bullhorn woman bears an uncanny resemblance to her mother, she admits she was in Washington but that's it.
Here's her statement..

Although I’m mostly a lurker on these threads I really enjoy them and as I’m not American I find them informative. There are people out there who desperately don’t want us to have these conversations on public forums as they don’t want people to learn certain things.

It’s never good to be in an echo chamber and so I’m always cool with hearing what people who disagree with me think and there have been many instances where my mind has been changed. However, the poster who’s trying to derail this thread has no intention of trying to educate, persuade etc and is becoming increasingly antagonistic what with the ‘you wouldn’t say this to black people’ comment. It’s pretty desperate stuff designed to prevent the thousands of people reading this thread from learning more about American politics. The poster doesn’t want a discussion and so I think it’s best if we ignore any new posts from them.

I’d be really pleased to see a post from a traditional Republican on what they think. I’m friends with an American expat who voted Republican based on taxes alone and we’ve had conversations around whether it’s better to pay less tax which benefits your family or more tax which will benefit others therefore helping you by ‘raising all boats’. Interesting stuff. He’s horrified by what Trumps done to the party.

Roussette · 17/01/2021 08:27

A year is a long time in politics. I remember the candidates well, I had my favourites and none of them were Biden. But here we are, and he will have a fantastic team to delegate to, and I really rate Kamala Harris. In the words of Trump (did I really say that?!)
It is what it is
I'm just looking forward to Biden and his team taking over from 12 noon next Wednesday and doing the hard work that Trump has managed to avoid.

Biden/Harris have a helluva job in front of them.

Trump cannot avoid seeing this from the WH, put up ready for Wed...

Catfishing 101 - Women on Bumble luring men to send them riot pics then sending those to FBI.

Bumble removed its political filter after people said they used it to lure conservatives who were at the Capitol riot into sending incriminating evidence.

Haha women are brilliant!

cyclingmad · 17/01/2021 08:47

@roussette

Still see you have no answer for saying we should forget about history.....

Says it all then doesn't it, is that what some extremists groups try to do, make people forget about history and erase it

And well what a surprise, back to labelling and referring to me as a squirrel, back to the bullying tactics, why not just use my username?

You've called me mentally ill which is a great disservice to those who are genuinely mentally ill

You call me a disruptor...ooohhh because I dont come on here gleefully tearing down Trump and rubbing my hands in excitement. I dont behave thay way to be glad he is going

I made my comments showing Biden is no better thats all, but time again its just oh well its too long ago and we are talking about today, really I don't see a date stamp on what time period we can only talk about

I mean the nonesical comments about me being paid or having a partner as fairy tales, im not being paid. I mean your all going into conspiracies now, or wait isn't thay what trump followers do believe in conspiracies. Then again you will continue to believe im deliberately here or being paid lol more fool you
