Kids in supermarket trolley Yes or No?

AliceMcK · 13/01/2021 16:15

Just reading an article about some guy complaining about kids going in supermarket trolleys. Personally I don’t have an issue with it, I’ve put my DCs in plenty of times. I think the majority of parents, especially with multiple DCs do it.

YABU - No they should not go in trolleys
YANBU - Yes it’s fine to put them in as long as it’s safe.

I've always hated it! That's where my food goes, even as a mum to two young DC's.
But, now I'm a (shortarse) parent of a big 4 yo, I find getting her in and out of the 15kg limit seat too much. I can't reach high enough!
She could walk round but is a bigger for touching, so I can see why people do it now.

WorraLiberty · 13/01/2021 16:18

I never did it but I have absolutely no issue with it.

Fatfunt · 13/01/2021 16:19

I don’t mind other people doing it. But i wouldn’t personally. I know people can get really stupid and petty at time. I rather not have to deal with the agro!!

AvoidingNextdoorNeighbour · 13/01/2021 16:19

Bums in the toddler trolly seats? Fine. Potential dog shitty shoes on the inside of the trolly where my food goes? No. No reason to put a child actually inside of a trolly!

FoxyTheFox · 13/01/2021 16:19

Its fine as long as they're safe and I can 100% guarantee that a child's shoes and (clothed) bottom won't be the worst thing that's touched the inside of any given shopping trolley.

I can also 100% guarantee that the same people who whinge about children in trolleys are the same people who whinge about children walking around in shops too.

Samcro · 13/01/2021 16:19

i hate it as I worry about the trolly tipping.
but understand that some parents have no choice.

Kitdeluca1 · 13/01/2021 16:22

Do you mean the seat or the actual trolley? I’ve got a 2 and 1 year old so if I can’t get a double seat littlest goes in the seat and biggest stands in the trolley. Don’t see a problem with it personally!

The trolleys are stored outside overnight where teenagers and other hangers-about climb all over them, drunks pee against them on their way home from the pub, birds (and other wildlife) stand on them, shit on them, local cats, etc. When they get abandoned in nearby streets and on housing estates, where they have goodness knows what put in them, they're not cleaned before being added back into the trolley park.

The person after you may well do if your kid’s dirty shoes make contact with their groceries. Envy

Do you mean sitting in the actual main bit of the trolley where the food goes or in the designated seat for them. I have no issue putting my child into the actual seat - I would I never get to the shop otherwise. I’m not so keen on letting them sit inside the actual trolley when they get bigger - my husband recently witnessed a child topple out of the trolley. So I guess it would be a no on both safety and hygiene concerns.

FoxyTheFox · 13/01/2021 16:26

If you're so worried, wipe your food down. You should be washing any unpackaged foods like fruit and veg anyway (even in non-covid times).

CigarsofthePharoahs · 13/01/2021 16:26

When ds2 was a toddler he often ended up in the main part of the trolley. He'd worked out how to undo the lap strap on the trolley seat and had taken to standing up on the seat. Very dangerous. I tried getting him to hold onto the trolley and walk with me, but he'd bolt.
It was the least bad option to put him on the main part of the trolley. I didn't like it either, but believe me nobody liked the ear splitting noise he'd make if I made him sit in the seat or walk.

Losingmymind2021 · 13/01/2021 16:27

I’ve always put mine in. Not now they are older but never thought anything of it but in more recent times I probably wouldn’t.

Saying that, I don’t think anyone’s got ill from putting their shopping into trolleys children have sat in.

Once my child was tired in gone bargains. He was about 2 so I lay him on my coat in the trolley 🤣

For some children it’s safer for them to be in the trolley.

user1493413286 · 13/01/2021 16:28

I can’t say it bothers me; I’ve worked in shops and the way boxes are stored on the floor, come off the floor of dirty lorries etc I can’t see it as being hugely different.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 13/01/2021 16:29

My ds is 6 but so small like a 4 year old so he still gets in the toddler seat! I prefer this atm to be honest as it stops him getting in peoples way as we try to socially distance and prevents him from touching stuff.
The seats are there for a reason , I dont see the issue with it

FoxyTheFox · 13/01/2021 16:30

Are the warehouses still filthy? Its been years since I worked in. Supermarket but you could guarantee that if you were down to do the warehouse you would be scruffy by the end of your shift.

Petitmum · 13/01/2021 16:31

I have two kids, one with special needs. I have never put either in tbe trolly.

I never would as I once witnessed a small child fall out head first and cut themselves very badly, it was horrible, blood everywhere , screaming child, the mother was hysterical.

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 13/01/2021 16:31

No. Hate it. So unsafe for the kids, and pretty unsanitary for the trolley.

WhatKatyDidNxt · 13/01/2021 16:32

Sitting in the designated seat fine. Standing in the trolley is grim and a bit dangerous. It’s a big no from me

LouNatics · 13/01/2021 16:32

In the trolley seat fine, that’s what it’s there for.

In the actual trolley, no. That’s gross and unsafe and you shouldn’t do it. I don’t thing those baby car seats you can get like a baby bucket should go in the trolley either, isn’t there something about them toppling over?

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 13/01/2021 16:33

No its grim. Putting outside shoes in where people put their shoes. Plus its never safe. There is no "as long as its safe option." It is never safe. I worked in a store for 7 years and saw so many accidents. At least 10 lots of cut, bruised or broken fingers where kids trapped them under the flat bed trolleys while holding on, probably a similar number of cases of kids standing up in them and leaning over resulting in the trolley tipping over and the child smacking their head on the floor or shelving. One child who ripped her arm open all the way down her forearm because she tried to catch herself when the trolley tipped and caught her arm on a metal clipstrip. One girl who knocked 4 teeth out on the bar of a flatbed trolley she was riding on. Permanent teeth judging by her age. Parents tried to sue and lost as there was signage on the trolleys saying children should only ride in the seat and ultimately the parents endangered her, not us.

They have seats for a reason. If you can't fit them in the seat then they should walk. If disabled, use the disabled trolley that can attach to a wheelchair or even most buggies. If they'll run off, use a wrist strap. Give them a little trolley of their own to push.

I get sick of people going Oh its better than a tantrum. Um no not really. Tell that to the kid with dentures at about 8. Parent fgs, would you let them drink bleach to avoid a tantrum too?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 13/01/2021 16:33

I wouldn't permit them inside supermarkets, never mind inside the trolleys Grin

UserEleventyNine · 13/01/2021 16:33

Whenever this has come up before, people have posted about really nasty injuries to children they have seen when a trolley has tipped up. It's not safe; trolleys weren't designed or intended to have children in. And on a practical note, I doubt whether stores are insured for injuries to children caused by trolleys tipping over.

RCMcGee · 13/01/2021 16:34

Do what you like, but don't let them stand up in the trolleys. Working in a supermarket, I have seen far too many children (of varying ages) stand up, fall out and crack their head on the floor/shelving. If you're gonna put them in the trolley, make sure they are sat down. It's traumatic for the child to fall, and for onlookers to see a child in pain. I know most children wont do it, but all it takes is a split second while you're getting something off the shelf for them to be become excited by something and go over the side. Same with kids hanging onto the handle and 'skating' across the floor with the trolley.
