Kids in supermarket trolley Yes or No?

AliceMcK · 13/01/2021 16:15

Just reading an article about some guy complaining about kids going in supermarket trolleys. Personally I don’t have an issue with it, I’ve put my DCs in plenty of times. I think the majority of parents, especially with multiple DCs do it.

YABU - No they should not go in trolleys
YANBU - Yes it’s fine to put them in as long as it’s safe.

I have nonproblem with it. Much prefer kids in trollies than running around infront of people.

Have to laugh at people who say how unhygienic it is. They obviously don't think about the fact trollies are kept outside, and the packaged food you are buying has been stored in factories, on crates that don't get cleaned, in store rooms etc. Honestly the teolly that a 3 year old was sitting in is no worse.

I've seen a trolley tip and a small child tumble out and land on their head. I was working in a supermarket during my gap year. He was unresponsive and bleeding heavily. I would never, ever put a child in a trolley. In fact, store policy was to stop people from doing it.

There was a big local campaign about this when I was about ten (so mid-nineties) after a three year old boy ended up wheelchair bound when the trolley tipped over. His mum had his younger sister in the seat and thought it was safer to put him in the trolley than have him walk on his reins. His mum was all over local radio/papers trying to get the message across, and there were posters of him before and after at all the trolley bays in our local Safeway's for years.

Having seen a couple of toddlers fall out of them head first, I’m not a fan!

hansgrueber · 13/01/2021 18:00

@LeslieYep

I've always hated it! That's where my food goes, even as a mum to two young DC's. But, now I'm a (shortarse) parent of a big 4 yo, I find getting her in and out of the 15kg limit seat too much. I can't reach high enough! She could walk round but is a bigger for touching, so I can see why people do it now.
Surely at 4 a child is old enough to walk and even be helpful, go and get three of whatever.

As for trolleys, would it be acceptable to carry a dog in the trolley? It's feet walk on the same surfaces as a child,

ChestnutStuffing · 13/01/2021 18:59

No, I don't have an issue with it. I'd rather the seat took bigger kids, but they don't, and I wish they'd all take two kids, but they don't.

When I was growing up, people were a lot more relaxed about kids walking around in the store and such. Getting lost in the grocery store was common. It's not really considered acceptable now, so options are limited for kids that won't keep their hands to themselves or wander.

Um...no? If a dog is in a trolley then it is clearly not a service dog and shouldn't be in a supermarket in the first place. Why do people keep trying to derail this thread by talking about dogs? Dogs are completely irrelevant, go start your own thread.

partyatthepalace · 13/01/2021 19:16

I don’t care.

I suppose some people hyper concerned c hygiene might but then they get left out in car parks etc.

I’d do it if there were otherwise going to be running off.

Nanny0gg · 13/01/2021 19:27

Why do you think there are instructions on the handle telling you not to do that?

1Morewineplease · 13/01/2021 19:37

I've posted on a similar thread.
Saw a trolley with a young child standing in the main part of the trolley. There was a baby in the baby cradle bit. The child overreached and the trolley toppled over.
It was truly horrible.

People who put walking age children into trolleys are just lazy. If your walking age child is unable to spend half an hour walking around a supermarket then don't visit, get someone else to look after your child or get a home delivery.
No excuses.

Ericaequites · 13/01/2021 19:41

In the States, signs request that you not put child in the cart proper. At Walmart, I frequently see children with feet larger than mine riding in carts.

NotFrozen · 13/01/2021 19:44

It depends on the age of the child. But I had no choice when I had a baby and a toddler- toddler had to go in the trolley when there was no double seated trolley available. Otherwise my toddler would run off in the supermarket.

MaskingForIt · 13/01/2021 19:45

It is dangerous and pretty low class behaviour.

But there are a lot of low class people out there, so I guess they’re happy!

Lofthouse · 13/01/2021 19:47

I always do it, though probably only go when I have to take the kids about once every six weeks. Not visiting at all during lockdown.

Means I have a two, four and six year old but it's the best way to keep them safe and away from others in the present situation.

As others have said, animals and humans regularly pee on trolleys and I check my kids shoes or put them in without shoes.

I would love them (not 2 year old) to be free to walk and help me get things as they used to buy this is safest for all if I find myself in a situation where I have to take them.

grannyinapram · 13/01/2021 19:50

how can a trolley topple over? aren't they specifically designed so this won't happen? they are bloody heavy and the floors in supermarkets are always even. I've never ever in my life felt insane putting my kids in them.

also, if a mom puts her bab in a trolley 100% everyone's safer with him contained.

Plussizejumpsuit · 13/01/2021 19:51

It's disgusting. They walk on the floor where there's all sorts of dirt, including shit and spit. Then get the dirt on the trolley wher I put my food. Also its a massive tipping hazard. I used to work in a supermarket and you'd be surprised how a small kid can tip a trolley.

not masking anything are you woo woo woo douche alert Hmm
Plussizejumpsuit · 13/01/2021 19:52

Also if they're little enough to go in the trolley they are able to go in the seat

Standrewsschool · 13/01/2021 19:55

Trolley seat - fine
Trolley - not fine

Partly from a hygiene point of view, and partly from safety. I recall a kid nearly tip a full trolley over when she was trying to reach something from a conveyor belt.

Lozza70 · 13/01/2021 19:57

Groceries don’t usually come above the height of the trolley sides and lurch over to try and grab something off a shelf or get their parents attention.....
Horrific seeing small kids with preventable injuries after falling out of a trolley onto a concrete floor.

VenusClapTrap · 13/01/2021 19:58

I don’t like it and I never did it with my dc, but it’s not something I clutch my pearls about really.

Daphnise · 13/01/2021 20:01

Children are often dirty, sticky and snotty so I am against it.

Chemenger · 13/01/2021 20:01

I’ve seen a child topple a trolley and hit the floor head first. It’s not safe.

AgentCooper · 13/01/2021 20:06

I do it at the moment because it’s the only way I can do my shopping. You can see people visibly bristle when a toddler runs into a shop and though I tell him beforehand I can’t guarantee that he’s not going to touch something. I can’t push a trolley and hold his hand at the same time and he’s too big for the wee seat.

Lulu1919 · 13/01/2021 20:06

In the correct seats yes..
In the area where food goes NO !!!!!
