Kids in supermarket trolley Yes or No?

AliceMcK · 13/01/2021 16:15

Just reading an article about some guy complaining about kids going in supermarket trolleys. Personally I don’t have an issue with it, I’ve put my DCs in plenty of times. I think the majority of parents, especially with multiple DCs do it.

YABU - No they should not go in trolleys
YANBU - Yes it’s fine to put them in as long as it’s safe.

This is never something I've thought about before. Can't say it's ever bothered me.

I often see children in the trolley seats. I don't see them in the actual trolley so much but I'm not really fussed one way or the other

movingonup20 · 13/01/2021 16:36

No hate it, once mine got too big for the trolley they walked next to it, though whenever possible I did not take them (I got a monthly delivery of heavy/long life items)

Bums in the toddler trolly seats? Fine. Potential dog shitty shoes on the inside of the trolly where my food goes? No. No reason to put a child actually inside of a trolly!
This.

Also meant to add that trolleys aren't really checked for their safety. Worst I saw was a couple with their baby in a car seat in the trolley (don't ask why), and the trolley's wheels buckled and fell off, sending the very young baby spilling out of it and onto the floor. Luckily, the baby was unharmed, but the parents were hysterical. And for those saying it's unhygienic, yes it is, but you've also probably not seen the little gymnastics events rats perform on the trolleys when they're outside overnight. I see it every time I am on a night shift. A toddlers shoes wont make a difference when the rats have been running around and urinating on them. Just a thought.

YorkshireIndie · 13/01/2021 16:40

I always worry about them tipping over if I am going to be honest. The trolleys are not clean themselves

there was a thread about this very recently.

Surely whoever has a problem with this needs to, you know, get a life.

It's a kid in a trolley. Seriously. I have toddler twins and if there's only single trolleys available I'll put one or both in the trolley. It's that or losing them.

Or reins. Or wrist straps. Or shop online. Or click and collect.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8584371/

Sixty-two children treated for shopping cart-related injuries during a 15-month period.

The most common mechanism of injury was falling out of the carts (58% of children), followed by cart tip-overs (26% of children). Injuries caused by falls from the carts occurred across the entire age range, whereas injuries caused by cart tip-overs were most frequent among children 1 year of age or younger. The sitting position was associated with tip-over injuries, and standing in the cart basket was associated with falling from the cart.

Hollyoakswatcher · 13/01/2021 16:55

Instead of blaming parents with children about getting dog shit on your food in the trolley, why don’t you blame the dog owners who leave it everywhere. No dog shit doesn’t belong in a trolley, it also doesn’t belong on our shoes either.

Cart tip overs more frequent in those under 1 year. That’s odd. Would it think a child that little would tip a trolly.
AIMD · 13/01/2021 17:01

I have no issue with it and I have occasionally done it. Thought clearly there is a risk of the trolly tipping of kids are leaning over it. Though the only time my kids have almost tipped a trolly is when they were walking and leaning in the Side of it.

As others have said I’m sure the bottom of the trolly is dirty anyway. It’s not like they’re kept in a sterilised area before use.

I do watch my kids closely when they are in there though and wouldn’t walk away to allow them to stand and lean over. I only ever did it when they were in the annoying stage between fitting in the seat and being able to walk al on g with me sensibly.

I wouldn’t be surprised if more parents are doing it not to prevent children entering others personal space.

jobbyjg · 13/01/2021 17:02

Kids in proper seats yes but not a n the actual trolley part. It's really disgusting that where good goes not kids bums and dirty feet they might have stood in dog poo at some point.
I have young kids and have never let them . They have never asked either

Northofsomewhere · 13/01/2021 17:04

I'm currently working in a supermarket and like a pp have seen children in it unsafely and unless you can completely 100% trust than your child won't suddenly get up or even move to one side and tip the trolley I wouldn't recommend it. It's too much risk and supermarkets are more dangerous than you think.

At the same time, young children should be under control either in the trolly seat or holding your hand/the trolly. Only last week I saw a child about 2 run from a parent into the path of a colleague with a large comp (big metal cage) who was looking the other way as they passed other customers. I had to grab the child and shout to the colleague so they'd stop too just in case. The parents never even looked around during all this.

I've also regularly seen older children (up to the age of 10) sat in trolleys, children that by now should know how to behave in a supermarket and be able to walk around it for the 30 mins shopping trip. I know children with additional needs may struggle but this is a large number of children on a daily basis.

I also think there's a hygiene concern which I agree with, unless every single parent is taking responsibility for cleaning them afterwards I think they should probably make them walk if they can't fit in the seat unless there is a genuine inability to walk for that length of time. The more children see other children doing it the more will want to do it.

Mountainpika · 13/01/2021 17:07

In the seat or walking. NOT in the trolley itself. As to them running off - use reins. Gives them some freedom but within limits.

slashlover · 13/01/2021 17:11

It says that injuries from tip over are most frequent in under 1 year whereas injuries from falling are across all ages. Probably because they're lighter and less likely to be able to brace themselves.

The use of infant seats and restraining belts is an inadequate strategy for prevention of shopping cart-related injuries among children 1 year of age or younger, because cart tip-over is an important mechanism of injury in this age group.

Whattheactual20201 · 13/01/2021 17:11

I often put my 7 year old in a trolley. Our supermarket has a lack of disabled trolleys
I can’t push her pushchair and the trolley so she walks for a bit but when tired she goes in trolley. ( pre pandemic)

ultrablue · 13/01/2021 17:13

I work in retail, God the amount of times I have seen near misses is unbelievable.. little kids in seats where the parent hasn't even used the seatbelt.. it's so scary... Supermarket floors aren't forgiving.. and don't even get me started on parents and children on our travelators... Some Parents think that they are a treadmill for their kids

Choccyp1g · 13/01/2021 17:15

I suspect the tip over injuries to the under ones in the seats were caused by their toddler sibling standing up in the trolley and tipping it over.

sausagepastapot · 13/01/2021 17:15

Fucking Christ I wish people would find actual issues to talk about.

Twizbe · 13/01/2021 17:17

I'm sure when I was a kid there was a story about a girl the same age as me who was killed that way. The trolly toppled over while she was in it and something heavy landed on her.

I'd not put the kids in the trolly for this reason

AIMD · 13/01/2021 17:20

Ha ha! Yes. I just can’t get hot and bothered about it.
PaddingtonsHat · 13/01/2021 17:22

Completely bemused that people think trolleys are sanitary in the first place. Scan as you go and just put directly into your shopping bag.

Tal45 · 13/01/2021 17:22

In a seat in a trolley but not in the trolley itself.

cittabassa · 13/01/2021 17:22

I couldn't care less from the point of view of hygiene, but those of you who are so blase about it should go back and read the posts from staff who have seen the accidents it can cause.

It isn't safe for your child.
