Kids in supermarket trolley Yes or No?

AliceMcK · 13/01/2021 16:15

Just reading an article about some guy complaining about kids going in supermarket trolleys. Personally I don’t have an issue with it, I’ve put my DCs in plenty of times. I think the majority of parents, especially with multiple DCs do it.

YABU - No they should not go in trolleys
YANBU - Yes it’s fine to put them in as long as it’s safe.

The hygiene aspect doesn't bother me - trollies are filthy at the best of times.

But I've seen a child fall out after tipping the trolley over, and the smack of their head off the concrete followed by their scream is a sound you don't forget in a hurry.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 13/01/2021 20:14

I've always been surprised how often I see this, once DS hit the weight limit for the seat he's always been happy to walk around

As for trolleys, would it be acceptable to carry a dog in the trolley? It's feet walk on the same surfaces as a child

Um...no? If a dog is in a trolley then it is clearly not a service dog and shouldn't be in a supermarket in the first place. Why do people keep trying to derail this thread by talking about dogs? Dogs are completely irrelevant, go start your own thread.

Apologies to all, I allowed it's to sneak in when of course it should have been its. Easy to dismiss objections, the coward's way out, the equivalent of taking one's bat home! Well done dearie.

In the seat, no problem (better than a loose toddler atm)
In the basket where the food goes, no thank you.

pinkpetal2 · 13/01/2021 20:25

I sit my DD in the actual trolley bit I don't see an issue with it, and if you're that worried most supermarkets supply spray and wipes now to clean the actual trolley. She has additional needs and is way to big for the seat.

Sirzy · 13/01/2021 20:28

Having had to rush to grab a child who was about to fall out of a trolley while Mum had her back turned at the shelf I hate to see children in the main body of the trolley. Too much risk of injury

ioffernothing · 13/01/2021 20:30

Trolleys are for food and as cannibalism is generally considered to be unacceptable so children should not be in trolleys.

RTFT, it's actually surprisingly easy for the trolley to tip.

study 1

In a study over one year at one A and E department, there were eight children’s accidents involving shopping trolleys. 50% had head injuries. The study was on children under five years old. If you factor in children that didn’t go to A and E, that’s probably one accident per month.

Do the store have any of the firefly trolleys? Or even just the bigger ones with a seat in?
Felifox · 13/01/2021 20:37

@FoxyTheFox My thoughts exactly, open to the elements, birds, rats etc. This is reminiscent of when it was discovered that it was unhygienic to put peanuts or snacks on the bar due to people not washing their hands. I've seen adult men having a trolley race down the hill from the pub after watching England play, each with a passenger.

I think the reason the supermarkets would prefer dcs not to sit in the trolleys is due to fear of responsibility for any accident.

HoppingOnSteppingStones · 13/01/2021 20:37

I've had not much choice recently. Our local store has removed all the trolleys with 2 seats for my baby and toddler.
If my toddler walked. Half the shelves would be on the floor food touched etc. Plus runs off.. Tried it once and she got hit with another trolley.
So I have to put one in seat and one in big bit. Which is a pain as hard to fit the shopping in with a child in the main part.

All those moaning about the shoes. How many pre covid wiped trolleys and sanitised after. Imagine how many people touched handles. Toddlers jn the seat licking the handle bars etc. Yet you touch it. Grab items off shelf, those items end up in cupboards etc?

Having additional needs is not an excuse to put children into the main compartment of a trolley.

Under ones are most in danger from trolleys tipping. Have you tried reins?
funinthesun19 · 13/01/2021 20:54

I really don’t know what people want from parents sometimes.

Don’t put your 2 year old child in the trolley, Child doesn’t want to walk so sits in the middle of the aisle/child tries to grab things/child has a paddy/child tries to run off and then gets in people’s way. Meanwhile the parent is trying to push a heavy trolley while trying to pick a toddler up.
People then complain.

Put your child in the trolley for their own safety and to make your shopping journey much smoother so that you can get out of there much more quickly. People still complain.

Can’t win.

It’s not as easy as just leave your child at home. If there’s nobody at home then people have to take their child with them. Online shopping isn’t for everyone. Maybe the family need food NOW rather than at the end of the week.

Just wipe down the trolley before you use it if it’s hygiene that bothers you. It’s not rocket science. Supermarkets now provide ample amounts of sanitiser upon entering the store so just use that ffs.

BashfulClam · 13/01/2021 20:55

IT IS NOT SAFE the trolley can become unbalanced at the bottom with the weight of a child. I have seen horrific head and face injuries, crushed fingers, broken fingers, nails torn off from idiots thinking this is ok. It just take a second for a child to stand up and top my and seeing that is sickening when it could have been avoided. Hygiene wise well once you see what happens to food and trolleys before you touch them you wouldn’t be worried!

In a store evacuation it also hampers the time taken to leave. Lifting small child from a drag rake less time than helping an older child safely from a trolley. It’s only seconds but it counts and you may be in the way of other people trying to leave.

People who think this is fine should be shown the injuries incurred and made to clean up the blood from a fall (there is always a lot of blood when a child’s skull meets concrete ).

funinthesun19 · 13/01/2021 20:57

I was on about the seats in my post by the way. Is that not what this thread is about?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 13/01/2021 20:58

It doesn't matter if its easier or not. You shouldn't have to leave your kids at home to please other people. I didn't have children to keep them in the house their whole lives.

inquietant · 13/01/2021 21:00

Absolutely unreasonable, unless you don't care about your child having a really tasty head injury.

I think 'total muppet' when I see parents doing this.

BashfulClam · 13/01/2021 21:02

I laugh at the parents who say ‘he knows not to stand up and not to touch things!’ How many children do you know who do 100% of what they are told all the time?

funinthesun19 · 13/01/2021 21:04

Oh I completely agree! Children have just as much right to be out in public as adults. Personally I’d rather some adults stay at home tbh.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/01/2021 21:05

In the seat/seats fine, in the trolley NO.

Bloody hell, just parent your child How do you think people managed 20, 30 years ago? There were heavy trollies then too. I had to shop alone with mine We told our children no , you are putting your child in a trolley for your own convenience, don't try and convince yourself otherwise I dispair, every excuse under the sun Just parent
ElBandito · 13/01/2021 21:22

I've seen one with children in tip over ☹️. One child in the seat and two in the trolley who wouldn't stay sitting down.
So I'm a no as I think it's too dangerous

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/01/2021 21:42

I once caught a child who was falling out of a trolley. I still get cold chills when I see kids in them.
