Here in the UK, debates around Brexit have certainly strained familial bonds, meanwhile in the US, Trump and his divisive politics have done that same.
That was no more obvious than when an 18-year-old woman spotted her mother at a Trump protest and proceeded to call out her hypocrisy.
Helena Duke had spotted her mother in footage posted on social media in which violence erupted as Helena’s mother Therese attempted to grab a Black woman who was surrounded by a crowd of white Trump supporters.
Therese had travelled to Washington DC in secret and had turned off her phone’s location in an attempt to prevent her daughter from finding out where she was.
However, in the viral clip, Helena recognised her mother, as well as her uncle Richard Lorenz and aunt Annie Lorenz. None of them had informed 18-year-old Helena they were attending the ‘Stop the Steal’ rally.
In a Twitter post, Helena retweeted the footage with a caption reading:
“hi mom remember the time you told me I shouldn’t go to BLM protests bc they could get violent...this you?”
