If I was a republican, I would vote to impeach to bring the matter to a swift end. Who knows what would come out during a lengthy investigation.

I think there will be a lengthy investigation regardless, but it will probably get less attention if they've done the right thing and convicted

If the US didn't have capital punishment, Trump could not have done that.

When Trump is gone, the US will still have capital punishment. What's more everyone will say "It's OK we can continue to have capital punishment now Trump has gone ..."

Stop killing people. I know it's addictive and all that. But not civilised. And certainly cruel and unusual.

Lisa's life was so horrific.
She should have been removed from her "family" like her sister was.
She was a very, very damaged person.
She was failed by everyone who should have protected her.
In failing her they failed her victims.
Tragic.

Interesting question floating around now about the exact nature of the Senates ability to convict upon impeachment.

The Constitution actually mandates a 2/3rds majority of voters present so Republicans don't need to actually vote at all if they want to keep their hands clean.

The Senate shall have sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

I suppose part of the problem is that right wing nutjobs have been talking about storming DC for years, and it was all bullshit, so law enforcement was inclined not to take the latest chatter seriously. BUT they obviously should have because there have been serious actual attacks and plots recently, like the Michigan militia that was going to storm the statehouse and execute people live on TV.

Even if they didn't take the intelligence about planned, orchestrated violence seriously, they knew there was going to be a large demonstration on the day. On such an important day constitutionally, and with just about every member of the government in attendance, there is no explanation for the completely inadequate policing other than deliberate sabotage by people in LE leadership positions. The cops were completely overwhelmed when there could easily have been thousands more of them deployed and my heart sank for those poor officers who had to face that baying crowd with nothing more than bicycle helmets for protection.

I'm confident though that the good guys (and by that I mean those who believe in law & order and democracy, not Republican v Democrat) will get to the bottom of this and hold all those complicit to account. They need to get through the inauguration though and until they do I remain very nervous.

Right up until the administration of justice hits the political ceiling. And then it'll all be forgotten.

Compare and contrast with how the US political system dealt with "Commies" under McCarthy ...

I hope you are right. The idiot foot soldiers who don't know any better are one thing, but the chilling indications that this was a highly organised, top down operation must not be allowed to go unpunished. I wonder if this is why the Feds have been so slow in debriefing. I wonder if they are having to hold back information because it's not over yet.

17 Republican senators are needed for an impeachment conviction. That sounds like a tall order but it might not be as far-fetched as we think. Instead of looking for politicians "who will do the right thing", we need to be looking for people who want to keep their jobs in 2024 and consider Trump to be a liability for the party. Remember, if he is convicted, he cannot put himself forward as a candidate, leaving the field clear for a fresh face.

Republicans may not have a conscience, but they definitely have ambition.

I have don't think there will be mass shoot outs because most people don't want to go to prison.

Yes I agree, there's plenty of Republican folk who don't back Trump or what he did.
