What a picture. The National Guard sleeping in the corridors of the Capitol building this morning.

Today is a very important day.

They know the layout and each other, and have co-ordinated their invasion.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 13/01/2021 14:07

Getting there early this time? Or to do with the refusal of some (low-life) Republicans to go through the newly installed metal detectors?

I spotted the National Guard sleeping in the hallways of the Capitol as I walked in this morning.

Sorry, @Roussette, snap again!

Mittens Yes! Fine by me!

@borntobequiet

Inviting her to the inauguration - even if it's done under the guise of pandering to her delusions - would be a clever way to dampen any violence there. And if she's offering to be a hostage (since we've gone all GoT) it would be rude to refuse. After all, the more guns there are, the more chances one might go off by accident. As LBJ knew full well.

And of course if you were writing the screenplay, it would be a very good way to increase the tension.

Hmm

Imagine how many authors have had stories which were much less bonkers rejected as "could never happen" ?

Hmm

Comes to something when a bunch of nutters can give the appearance of outplanning the military in their own country. Why can't we deploy these geniuses against ISIS ?

The really horrible thing about the execution of Lisa Montgomery, to me, is that if they were going to kill her it should have been done shortly after she was found guilty of committing her (horrible) crime.

Keeping the victim of severe childhood abuse who is brain damaged, and clearly has not got the capacity really to comprehend what she has done wrong, alive in a cage for thirteen years knowing that she is going to be killed at some point in the indefinite future, before killing her, is refined torture, to me. More uncivilised even than the killing.

My main concern about the whole story is, were any of the people who had abused, raped and tortured the child Lisa called to account in any way? Did they go to court and answer for their crimes? Is her stepfather in prison? Is her mother ashamed of the part she played in it, sexually trafficking a child to get plumbing done free? Are her siblings ok now, or are they too PTSD sufferers?

In the background of the clips posted by lionheart and TheNorthWestPawsage are a number of men fiddling around with the laptops and with computer wires of some sort.

As well as the violent intruders set on searching for senators, there were presumably a number of professionals jumping on an opportunity to get information and/or do a bit of old-fashioned spying Hmm

It used to be the case that a young black man in LA had a longer life expectancy if they were on death row, than if they lived free.

Of course, as long as you execute them eventually there is nothing cruel and unusual about capital punishment.

What's the betting that Brexit Britain is now secretly resupplying all the US penitentiaries that use lethal injection ?

I have one day of gardening (and stupidly turned myself into a sunburnt lobster) And return to 289 comments and a brand new thread.
Fast moving does t even begin to explain it!

Has anyone see the Vice series “Fringe Nation”?
I watched the one on Modern militias (Boogaloo etc).
I found it frightening in their hardline views when it comes to govt, how they now disguise themselves up at “main stream media” so that they aren’t removed from social media and the amount of fire power they have accessible.

Or to smash up certain Congresspeople's panic buttons, as someone reported earlier today, sorry, not sure if on this thread or on #19.

Oh lord, I've just realised there's a line missing from my post at Wed 13-Jan-21 13:41:33, viz:

Trump, too, is strongly motivated by wanting fame and his name in lights. It keeps him going.

(I add this before someone comes on the thread and accuses me of claiming that Trump is a mass shooter... Nope. Though I'm sure he has a very great deal in common with them.)

CaveMum · 13/01/2021 14:27

By the way, the second part of the BBC Four documentary (a repeat) "Inside Obama's White House" was on last night so will be on iPlayer. It focussed on "Obama Care" and the fight they had to get it through. It gives good background information in how these things work.

I have to confess to hissing at the TV any time one of the current Repug ringleaders appeared on screen!

Roussette · 13/01/2021 14:29

The impeachment hearing is taking place now. The excuses the Republicans are making are gobsmacking. They want to heal. Why could they not have 'healed' when the election result was called?

I'm sorry, the Alzheimer's Lite well and truly set in, it was on this thread, not #119, and was in a Boston Globe article, referring to Ayanna Pressley.

BBC reporting that we can expect the actual vote on Impeachment around 1600 EST/2100 GMT.

In Mississippi Burning, there's a scene where Gene Hackmans character explains the South to his Northern liberal colleague.

It boiled down to a state of mind which is quite happy to live in shit, as long as your neighbours are living a tiny bit more shittily. Best summed up by Gore Vidal (a name that could cause a hardcore Republican to explode ...) saying:

It is not enough to win. Others must lose.

So people would happily not have "free" healthcare, as long as they knew their (ideally black) neighbours aren't either.

Dongdingdong · 13/01/2021 14:33

Thanks for telling me what I think and feel DongDingDong. hmm

@PerkingFaintly Any time! You clearly needed a bit of help untangling those complex thoughts of yours.

Igotjelly · 13/01/2021 14:33

On the pics of the national guard. I'm quite pleased they're sleeping and not having to do anything at the moment!

CNN 'live update' thread on impeachment vote.

Vote expected around 3pm EST (the last I heard)

Roussette · 13/01/2021 14:34

The Republican now speaking who wants to stop this is talking about the expertise of Alan Dershowitz. Shock He's Trump's lawyer and murky with previous friendship with Epstein.

@TheABC

17 Republican senators are needed for an impeachment conviction. That sounds like a tall order but it might not be as far-fetched as we think. Instead of looking for politicians "who will do the right thing", we need to be looking for people who want to keep their jobs in 2024 and consider Trump to be a liability for the party. Remember, if he is convicted, he cannot put himself forward as a candidate, leaving the field clear for a fresh face.

Republicans may not have a conscience, but they definitely have ambition.

All the big business pulling fundraisers and donations will certainly be focusing minds.

It is definitely worth considering that $ for $ the Republicans couldn't match the Dems this election. Indeed the Republican party has managed to rack up huge debts. The majority of money raised to fund the 'stop the steal' legal fees wasn't put towards anything of the sort. The small print detailed it was going elsewhere to pay off debt initally. And then Trump changed it...

I'm not too hot on the set up of this, but pre election Trump was generally funding through the GOP official channels. Post election, he set up a new SuperPac which allows more direct control and little accountability to the party itself. The money can be spent on anything seen to be connected to political activities - it can be used to basically bankroll the entire Trump clan.

www.politico.com/news/2020/12/03/trump-pac-fundraising-442775
Trump’s post-election cash grab floods funds to new PAC

Current fundraising appeals from Trump solicit money for a joint fundraising committee, the Trump Make America Great Again Committee, which is directing 75 percent of each contribution to Save America, up to a $5,000 legal limit. Only after that point does money start flowing into a recount account set up by Trump’s presidential campaign. (The remaining 25 percent of donations go to various accounts for the Republican National Committee.)

I think this is worth noting actually because even if Trump is successfully impeached, I'm not 100% happens to this money or whether he can continue to do this. It can't be used for a 2024 presidential run anyway - only to influence the Republican Party and primaries. If Trump is disqualified I'm not sure how this sits with the legalities of such a fund. My suspicion is he problem isn't banned from doing this.

The Republican Party were worried about this anyway, because they fear Trump was trying to take over the entire party finances anyway. Its not entirely clear where the Republican Party begins and ends and where Trump Brand MAGA begins and ends at this point.

In the past the GOP has relied heavily on big donations from business and individual but with Trump this reduced significantly and there has been more emphasis on small donations from Trumps fanatics.

However this itself proved problematic at the end of the campaigning, with a fear that Trump starting his reelection bid in 2016 had slowly bleed a lot of small donors dry and there was nothing left to give by Nov 2020, with people feeling they had already 'done their bid'.

So there is possibly some method in Trump's 'madness' here too. As the 'election fees' fundraising has tailed off due to it being 'unsuccessful' next to non-existent or a complete sham, I'm sure donations will have started to go down. As a businessman conman trying to fund his own lifestyle post Presidency when the debt collectors are about to knock on the door and you've got huge legal bills you can't pay looming, he has to invent a new reason for supporters to donate to his cashcow. He has to radicalisal them, because they aren't wealthy. He has to invent a reason wage those on lower end (but not bottom) of the income scale, should be making regular donations to him. The whole patriotism link therefore is the perfect angle.

The GOP have a long term problem here which I'm not sure how they resolve. Financially they are screwed and the Trump Super Pac isn't helping matters. And thats even before the last week. In recent days even those who had stuck by the Party have been pulling the plug in response to events. Even if Trump CAN'T legally run this himself, I'm not sure that would stop someone else in the clan taking over and doing the same. There is clearly a significant amount of money to be scammed from White Nationalists and Nazis intent on 'Reclaiming their country'. And whilst that remains a nice little earner I think it will fuel the fanaticism that is required to drive it.

Its hard to move away from the idea that Trump won't just have a puppet he can control in someway until he is locked up without contact with the outside world or departs this life at its natural inevitable conclusion. I am not convinced that any of the Trump Clan can maintain the Brand without their father though. I think without him it will just fade without his personality. Trump could yet keep going for another 20 years or so.

There is much for the GOP to hope that someone will bump him off sooner or that he suddenly develops a grave uncurable illness. And much of that is purely for financial reasons rather than more ideological ones.
