To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

maybe those of you who make a £3 chicken last 7 meals never have a treat.

😂😂😂

IamEarthymama · 10/01/2021 10:57

Shinyletsbebadguys
Avocados are only 69p in Markies, Marksies, M&S, Marks&Sparks etc at the moment
I didn't lurk as they were in the Look whats 69p display near the door but I did buy 2.

We had filled pasta, one gf, one ordinary for supper last night. I made a tomato and veg sauce (I sautéed all veg before adding herbs, bouillon and chopped tomatoes before anyone asks!) BUT I bought a Four Cheese sauce in above retailer's and we had half in that.

It was bloody delicious.

I have long covid and get really tired, I went to town because I need meds as my asthma is worse now, damage to my lungs post CV.

If I want to buy food in M&S I will. The staff have been so good and kind through this unprecedented situation and I would like them to still keep their jobs.

Oh and I have a mixed Welsh Valleys, North West and 'Port accent, I use all sorts of vernacular and love a double entendre à la Round the Horne!

I love MN. But there are some right plonkers on here sometimes

Goatscheesewithhoney · 10/01/2021 11:09

I know exactly what picky bits means and I’m sure everyone else does too, even if it isn’t a phrase you use.

What was OP supposed to say? I’d like “some finger foods that I can snack on when I fancy it, that don’t constitute a main meal but are nice to have anyway and don’t need to be prepped or cooked in any way”...

I love picky bit from M & S and also know “Markies” from living in Scotland at one point.

That is where I got all my Boxing Day snacks from and I might well drive there for a browse and top up this week (same distance as my local supermarket, before I get pounced on, and I wouldn’t give a fuck if it was further).

There isn’t much going on in the way of treats at the moment and I am fed up of preparing food constantly as we are all at home.

They do “cauliflower popcorn” that my vegetarian DD loves, so that will keep her quiet for a while Grin while I pick on marinated prawns and microwave dim sum.

I hail from Aberdeen too and it's always been Markies to me. Never thought of it being childish speak. How rude. Some posters need to get over themselves, different regions and nations have their own dialects specific to them.
I've only ever heard picky bits on MN, it's always been nibbles I've used, but then I'm a child of the 70s so probably a lot older than most on here!
OP I hope you manage to get to Markies for some picky bits. Enjoy them, we all need a treat just now.

Literallynoidea · 10/01/2021 11:12

This thread title makes me WINCE.

Who speaks like this!

squeezeapplesmakejuice · 10/01/2021 11:16

Markies? Lol

Figgygal · 10/01/2021 11:17

@redact from Aberdeen too

@Literallynoidea maybe if you’d read the thread you would know many do and that there’s no need to be a judgemental arsehole
How should she have described it in a lighthearted post on mumsnet?

Figgygal · 10/01/2021 11:19

@squeezeapplesmakejuice your point? Lots of people call it that was very normal where I grew up

Heaven forbid regional variations exist

The snobbery and snideness on this thread is really unattractive

DustyVenetian · 10/01/2021 11:20

They once (and maybe still do) use the St Michael brand. Not sure what that was about

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 11:25

@Literallynoidea awa stick your arse oot the windae an rattle it hen

TJ17 · 10/01/2021 11:30

I've decided we should all speak "like this" (I already do - I'm from Bristol my lovvverz) so we can repel all the asshole snobs like the ones in this thread 😂

HuckfromScandal · 10/01/2021 12:00

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel.
Love the user name. Hamilton fan perchance? And not the football team 😂😂.
And love the sentiment too
@Agirlnamedsam. - you go!

To the rest of the bitches on this thread, don’t fucking mess with NE Scots women, we won’t be having your shite.

It has finally defrosted enough for me to get off my hill, having being snowed and iced in since the 28/12. - I am off to get a picky tea from Markies to celebrate 😀😀😀

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 10/01/2021 12:10

@HuckfromScandal werk! Grin

🤣 I love you, OP.

Myrrfect · 10/01/2021 13:05

I do wish the OP HAD got her picky bits!

Just for her good humour and patience she deserves picky bits, nibblies and a bucket of Prosecco

Myrrfect · 10/01/2021 13:07

Or maybe for some of the PP on this thread that should be.... bouquet 🤔

Onesipmore · 10/01/2021 13:12

@RufustheSniggeringReindeer Agreed, but there is little point highlighting the people that have been perfectly pleasant.Its a non point. I was pointing out the snobbish, snide comments of several posters. Its very easy to be unkind and in some cases vile whilst hiding behind a screen.It's how bullies behave and sometimes that needs pointing out!

Yes, frankly. The above would have been much more acceptable. Thankfully, I have not heard anyone in real life use the cringeworthy expression “picky bits”.

Oh you mean “bubbles and nibbles”? 🙄
Goatscheesewithhoney · 10/01/2021 13:21

@Janegrey333 - You don’t live in Scotland. Has that part passed you by ?

There is regional variation in the words and phrases that people use. Is this something you were previously unaware of?

Oh I completely agree

I just read it as 22 pages of mean comments...but if thats not what you meant then thats not what you meant

But yeah...don’t really get the snide about nicknames for a store 😒

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 13:25

@Janegrey333. Away fart in a bottle and rattle it

@Janegrey333 how does it feel to be such a pompous twit? Hmm

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 10/01/2021 13:31

Janegrey333

What’s wrong with you?

Friendsoneuptown · 10/01/2021 13:35

It’s Markies where I am and picky bits or a picky tea - which I now quite fancy. Thanks OP.
