To want to go to Markies for picky bits

736 replies

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

It’s not childish to call it Markies: it’s what lots of Scottish people have been calling it for years. Ffs

And i said picky bits, not picky bitties. Can you not read? @Duanphen

In fairness, I have not been in a shop since early December, nor been mixing. So if all others followed my lead, then we possibly wouldn’t be in this mess.

It’s marksies where I am. I’ve never heard markies.

Anyway, I’d love to know why people think it’s open if no one should ever visit it. Perhaps we should be restricted to oats, carrots and milk during this lockdown. Would that keep people happy?

angieloumc · 09/01/2021 18:21

Not read the full thread, but you can get M&S food on Ocado now. Though perhaps too late you could keep in in mind if you're happy with grocery deliveries.

Funkypolar · 09/01/2021 18:28

Went to M&S today and got some lovely bits.

humhumit · 09/01/2021 18:28

Sparks for us ! Go for it

MadameBlobby · 09/01/2021 18:31

@DimidDavilby

She already has her food in she just wants to go for fun and a change of scene. That's not fucking essential.

Just because it's not illegal doesn't mean you should do it. Don't letter of the law me when people are dying in their 1000s.

And don’t you make up your own version of the rules and berate others for not following them.
WatermelonKisses · 09/01/2021 18:32

It's Markies in the Highlands too. I don't live there anymore but can hear it now!

TheKeatingFive · 09/01/2021 18:34

And don’t you make up your own version of the rules and berate others for not following them.

This place sometimes. I can’t even.

Groovee · 09/01/2021 18:35

@Agirlnamedsam

Fed up as I’m now juggling childcare/ homeschooling with working full time. My son has been greeting and whining for days. I’ve stuck to every fucking rule for nearly a year. Not seen my family for a long time. Seen lots of other people meeting up with multiple people over the holidays. Not judging.

I think that a quick trip to Markies to pick up some picky bits is a minor crime.

But my husband and mumsnet think I’m being unreasonable (but I suspect mumsnet are saying it because of my word choice)

I grew up with it being markies and if you want picky bits go for it.

Some days we need something nice with all the crap going on. I really hope you went and enjoyed.

HTH1 · 09/01/2021 18:36

YANBU to buy food from M&S. However, I voted YABU for your use of ‘Markie’ and ‘picky bits’.

Funkypolar · 09/01/2021 18:38

I’m sure some people on here want posters going shopping to PM them first to ask for permission.

HTH1 · 09/01/2021 18:38

You can have M&S and bits and pieces.

Justtrying · 09/01/2021 18:39

Marksies and picky bits go hand in hand, shopped online this week, ocado got a slot yesterday morning for delivery today, plenty of Marksies stuff in my basket. Front line keyworker who has been going to shops once a week, but now only going out to work.

tigger1001 · 09/01/2021 18:43

@Markies

How the fuck is calling it Markies, which has been done to death on here about it being a predominantly Scottish name for Marks & Spencer childish? Some people here really need to get a grip.
Agree with this!

It's always been markies to me. Didn't realise I was being childish.... don't suppose I will change now

nicky2512 · 09/01/2021 18:47

gooseygooseywanderingfree Thank you for your sympathy!!
Obviously I appreciate that at the minute that should be the least of my worries but it is just another blow! I’m scared to think what will be next.

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 18:50

Thanks to all of you who answered the question; whether i was unreasonable to purchase consumables from messrs marks and Spencer’s. On balance I won’t go just in the off chance I catch it (unlikely to spread it as we have all been at home with very little contact with others)

For all of you slagging me off for saying Markies and picky bits: I hope you’re next shite is a hedgehog

I'm in the north east of Scotland and it's Markie's here too. I'd say picky bits too, or a picky plate.

PicardsFlute · 09/01/2021 18:53

@TramaDollface

It’s always markies in Aberdeen and surroundings
This! (I speak from experience... also, I had no idea until today that it was so regionally specific).
User95659565 · 09/01/2021 18:58

I've heard of Markies and I say picky bits sometimes. There's plenty of people who could be doing click and collect / online shopping but don't bother because they prefer to go to the shops - they aren't berated for it. Well done for not going to a shop since the beginning of December - It sounds like you've been really responsible.

User95659565 · 09/01/2021 19:00

Also - YANBU for going into a shop once in over a month to top up your food.

TeeniefaeTroon · 09/01/2021 19:00

This reminded me of 20 years ago, my granny gave me a £20 Markies voucher and me and OH decided to get picky bits from the Aberdeen M&S with it as a treat. Even in those days we hardly got anything for the money. Was gutted and wished she'd got an Asda one instead 😂

HmmSureJan · 09/01/2021 19:02

My Mum and her friends always called it Marks and Sparks.

I love M&S food. Was a good day when Ocado started delivering their food.

I think I’m gan to call it picky bitties from now on - with pride. Especially if fae Markies 🤣

"This! (I speak from experience... also, I had no idea until today that it was so regionally specific"

Neither did I.
