To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

I really hope you do go and then come back and tell us what you got - I love m&s food and love picky teas even more!

Chickychoccyegg · 09/01/2021 17:25

Cant believe how rude people have been on this thread.
Markies is a normal abbreviation of marks and spencer where I live.
No way has everyone on here just went into a shop for essential items, sometimes we just fancy something nice, and everything's been so shit, so occasionally why not, its a small treat.
As long as a mask is worn, hands are sanitised, its perfectly acceptable, if you pay by self service, you dont even need to come into contact with any staff.
Hope you enjoy your snacks/treats

Bluesmartiesandpandapop · 09/01/2021 17:28

But absolutely go! You deserve some Markies picky bits after the hammering you've had on this thread. Eat some Percy pigs for me Smile

misslomi · 09/01/2021 17:29

Ignore all the people taking the piss OP! Food is essential so as long as you are masked up I dont see a problem.

splishsplashsploosh · 09/01/2021 17:30

This thread makes me despair. Why do people have to be so mean and biggotted? What does it matter what someone calls things? It distracts from the thread. I think in this situation it's only natural to feel like some treats, OP, but waiting until.after lockdown would be safer.

1Morewineplease · 09/01/2021 17:32

@dingit

How awful Op. we went a bit downmarket and went to Asda for some cookies and drinks to take on a walk for an illegal picnic. It's my birthday so there Grin
Happy Birthday!💐
ApolloandDaphne · 09/01/2021 17:32

I call M&S Markies. I too am Scottish. Who cares what anyone calls it. I would call picky bits snacky bits and pieces. I would also go and get this even if I had done my normal shop if that's what I wanted to eat.

gooseygooseywanderingfree · 09/01/2021 17:34

@Agirlnamedsam I'm from Lancashire and my mum always used to call it Marks's, so "mark-sies". That was before Mark & Spencer started to call themselves "M&S" and everyone followed. So I don't think you're odd.
And I have no problem with "picky bits" either (though I'd probably say snacky stuff Grin)

Andylion · 09/01/2021 17:35

@Patchworkthedog

I am howling. I've heard (and shuddered at) picky bits but never Markies!
Perhaps you need to see a vet who specializes in wildlife if hearing the word "Markies" makes you howl.
tinkywinkyshandbag · 09/01/2021 17:36

My DH went to the butchers today for a totally frivolous pork pie. We also get our shopping delivered. Was that also totally unreasonable? The butcher seemed very happy to serve him.

funinthesun19 · 09/01/2021 17:36

I don’t know if you mean McDonald’s or Marks and Spencer’s or something else entirely Grin, but just GO! Stop asking people on here for permission because there will be plenty who won’t give it to you Grin

I have been stuck at home having a fucking shitty time, having not seen family or friends for months and now balancing a stressful job and homefuckingschooling. So yes, I wanted some nice treat food. I’ve obeyed every other rule while seeing all the families about me do what the fuck they want

Apparently 9 out of 10 people are following the rules properly (at least that's what they said on Radio 4 today). Obviously it's a big problem that 1 in 10 are flouting the rules, as that's enough to spread the new variant very quickly indeed, even if they felt they got away with it in the first wave. However, that leaves millions in the same boat as you, working, homeschooling, not seeing family/friends and seeing the selfish minority break the lockdown rules. 1 in 50 of us now has the virus (1 in 30 in London) so if you go in a building with 50 people in, statistically one will be Covid positive and passing it on to others. Would you be OK with millions more people in your position heading for the high street?

nicky2512 · 09/01/2021 17:38

I’m just jealous that you can. As a Northern Ireland resident who discovered today that due to Brexit, one of the things M and S will no longer stock in NI is Percy pigs!!! I am flabbergasted!!!
I thought it was a wind up but no, Belfast live reported on over a hundred items axed including Percy.
I may have to move to Scotland.

Butchyrestingface · 09/01/2021 17:39

@Daphnise

Markies? Picky Bitties

This all sounds very childish.

Have you been eating too much sugar?

If you are serious, then YABU. Can you not understand "Stay indoors?"

Times like these I really lament MN's failure to (yet) provide us with a block list function.
Sarcobaleno · 09/01/2021 17:40

I think we're losing a bit of perspective here. The reason, in my view, that rates are so high is that Westminster has spent the last nearly year sending out very mixed messages, not properly creating or enforcing travel restrictions and ignoring transmission and safety in schools. Christmas obviously was a disaster with far too much social mixing. That's why people are in hospitals dying now. Going to the shops, paying contactless, wearing a mask and keeping your distance is a negligible risk compared to many other behaviours that so many people make. Lay off OP, and all the very careful, normal people who just want to live life safely for everyone but with sanity in tact.

june2007 · 09/01/2021 17:43

Never refered it to Markies, I thought you met a market or Maccies. And "picky bits" nibbles is better, snack food is better. But it,s not an essential journey is it.

That's so sad! What else will they stop stocking? Fucking Brexit, the gift that keeps on giving Angry

You and most of the rest of the population op. Me included. And I agree it’s shit.
But I’ll say it again, it’s a pandemic. People are dying and NHS staff are begging people to obey the rules, and the rules are no unnecessary journeys. Going to Markies for ‘nice’ food is not necessary. You have food from a whole supermarket click and collect.

Please stay at home.

Markies · 09/01/2021 18:02

How the fuck is calling it Markies, which has been done to death on here about it being a predominantly Scottish name for Marks & Spencer childish? Some people here really need to get a grip.

ivfbabymomma1 · 09/01/2021 18:03

Please don't tell me you mean m&s??

Butchyrestingface · 09/01/2021 18:06

Please don't tell me you mean m&s??

You've managed to read your way through this thread and not yet discern which shop is being referred to?

mrsfeatherbottom · 09/01/2021 18:12

We call it Marksies or Sparks and Mencer!

Sosigsandwich · 09/01/2021 18:14

Marksies here as well and picky bits is perfectly normal.
