To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

Picky bits is NOT ON! Just no.

I’ve never heard Markies. - people I know of might say “Marks’” (pronounces Markses) but not Markies.

But it sounds twee when combined with the awful “picky bits”

AndcalloffChristmas · 09/01/2021 17:01

You can get their food from Ocado now btw

AndcalloffChristmas · 09/01/2021 17:03

The Asda is brilliant though. Makes it sounds really hard Grin

The Morrison’s isn’t as good though. The Morrison? I quite like that.

PoptartPoptart · 09/01/2021 17:03

@ Agirlnamedsam ok so it was click and collect not a delivery.
You still paid someone else to do your shopping so you didn’t have to physically go into a shop. Why? Why do that if you have no qualms about going into shops yourself to get fancy food?

DimidDavilby · 09/01/2021 17:04

She already has her food in she just wants to go for fun and a change of scene. That's not fucking essential.

Just because it's not illegal doesn't mean you should do it. Don't letter of the law me when people are dying in their 1000s.

dontgobaconmyheart · 09/01/2021 17:04

So basically you want to go for respite and a treat then.

I haven't been in a shop since before the first lockdown, I'm ECV and obviously miss it as well. Absolutely no way, given that things are worse now than they have ever been should anyone be thinking it's acceptable to pop to the shop for a few treats. Just order something online, or get it when you next must do a food shop.

Good lord. I live with a food retail manager and they are in bits with stress worrying about catching covid seeing people coming in constantly for a bloody chocolate bar, stuff for a movie night or one can of coke or some crisps or cake decorations, or just to get out of the house. A lot of these staff won't get sick pay if they stay off (just SSP) , have had no PPE given during this, no support, no clapping, low wages. They have family at home same as everyone else. Amazing we can't afford them the decency of avoiding whenever possible, more social contact. What entitled and gauche lives some people lead.

DimidDavilby · 09/01/2021 17:05

That was to. @MadameBlobby

movingonup20 · 09/01/2021 17:07

Never heard Markies it's "Marks" generally in my acquaintances.

It's not essential but if the trip will improve your mental health then do it. I went to home bargains for very non essential tonic (have plenty of gin) because it's keeping us sane - a gin and tonic after a day of working from home before cooking yet another dinner is a small thing but does help us. No chance of Deliveroo/Uber eats here as a pick me up, they don't serve smaller towns

AndcalloffChristmas · 09/01/2021 17:07

Re your actual question- I can see why you want to tbh. But I think other posters sadly have it right by saying it’s not essential right now.

What about takeaways though? For those saying OP is bejng U? They aren’t essential and I guess involve someone having contact with you (all be it distanced).

1Morewineplease · 09/01/2021 17:08

@LakieLady

I'm in Sussex and we call "nibbles" picky bits. I hate "nibbles" - it sounds pretentious imo.

Markies though, are those marrowbone roll dog biscuits, so calling M&S/Marks "Markies" is just wrong!

That's what I thought... my dog loves them.
Duanphen · 09/01/2021 17:09

Jesus, do you actually use that baby talk in real life?

IamEarthymama · 09/01/2021 17:09

I had to travel to our nearest town to get two medicines that weren't in stock in the village pharmacy.

Shock and Horror!
While I was waiting for the prescription to be filled I went in Marksies' Food Hall!!
I could have said M&S to my wife and she would have understood where I was going.
I bought bread and yoghurt and gluten free pasta plus 3 bunches of daffodils

I am obviously a disgrace to my nation and my sex and I await the retribution that is surely on its way!!

drumandthebass · 09/01/2021 17:09

YABU to call it "Markies" and "picky bits". If you said M&S for bits and bobs I'd say YANBU Wink

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 09/01/2021 17:09

Mn hates picky bits. I love picky bits and would go now if I could drive

I might throw caution to the wind and nip out for some none essential vodka later

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 17:11

@PoptartPoptart. I’ve used click and collect long before the pandemic. It saves me time. There were plenty of slots left for other people when I ordered it yesterday.

I want to go to Markies because I have been stuck at home having a fucking shitty time, having not seen family or friends for months and now balancing a stressful job and homefuckingschooling. So yes, I wanted some nice treat food. I’ve obeyed every other rule while seeing all the families about me do what the fuck they want

DimidDavilby · 09/01/2021 17:11

Oh well done butchy, very droll.

I had the unfortunate experience of having to attend hospital yesterday and seeing the condition of the NHS has left me with very little patience for those pissing about with their picky bits.

Bluesmartiesandpandapop · 09/01/2021 17:12

I call it The Asda
Marks & Spencer's is Sparks though

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 17:13

@Duanphen it’s not baby talk. It’s how people in many parts of Scotland refer to marks and Spencer’s. Are you always so bloody rude and stuck up?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/01/2021 17:14

My lovely DD, when she was little, used to call it Marks and Spensive.

Oh how I miss those years.

SummerHouse · 09/01/2021 17:18

I think you should go op. I take it in turns with DP to go shopping. Slots were rare here. It's a total treat and we call it a Spar Day.

Peggyslantern · 09/01/2021 17:21

OP Flowers

You go get yourself some treats. Wear your mask, keep your distance from others and buy yourself the loveliest things you can find. I really don't see the problem given you are keeping away from people generally - it would be different if you were out every day buying unnecessary stuff. We all need a treat now and again, especially now. It sounds like you're having a tough time.

And I know this is MN and people love a bit of banter and are in need of some release, but a lot of this thread is pretty cringeworthy. It's a fine line between having an easygoing laugh at someone and joining in with being a bit of a twat. Some people clearly have never left school properly behind. You're not as funny as you think you are.

Absolutely go, and nothing wrong with your vocabulary. Treat yourself

NaToth · 09/01/2021 17:22

@JayAlfredPrufrock, my DD called it Marks and Spensive too.

TheDukeAndI · 09/01/2021 17:23

Go, now. Treat yourself Flowers

BakewellGin1 · 09/01/2021 17:23

Some of the people at 'shudder' at Marksies and Picky Bits Grin I wonder if they are so posh/pretentious or upper Middle Class in real life...

It possibly is a regional thing, however the word police are out in force today. I wonder if they all speak perfectly themselves.

However, back to your question, which is what you were asking about not a lesson in speech... I totally get why you would want a trip out after so long inside, however no it isn't essential so he has a point.
