To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.
@Happytentoes. I’ll be the one wearing a mask and putting picky bits into my basket. Probably buy myself some yummy choccies and some beer for the hubbie
Love this, hope you picked up some drinkiepoos for yourself too

@FirewomanSam

OP hasn’t been to to a shop since the beginning of December! How many of you laying into her can say the same?!
I'm not laying into her, I'm just saying she's irresponsible going to shops to get a few bits she fancies when she has food in the house that's delivered to her door. If you pay attention to news you might notice there's a wee virus doing its best to find lots of hosts & it's doing a bloody good job already, it's foolish to assist it unless you want Even more ambulances queued up outside massively overstretch hospitals.

And no, I haven't been inside a shop since the beginning of Dec.

marshmallowfluffy · 09/01/2021 16:27

I'd better not say I'm going to The Asda then

The Asda makes it sound posher than it is.

I use Big Tesco /Little Tesco instead or Tesco Extra and Tesco Express.

sausagepastapot · 09/01/2021 16:33

Fucking absolutely go to Marks, ignore all these absolute tossers laying into you..!

Bloody enjoy your picky bits!!! Fucking Nora, MN is horrific sometimes.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 09/01/2021 16:34

@Butchyrestingface

Central Scotland here, and it’s Markies. grin I’ll sometimes say M&S if I’m trying to be less common.

I lived in Central Scotland a long time, and never heard it so-called. Always M&S, or Marks, and sometimes even (looking at you, mum) 'Marks and Sparks'.

Will be listening out for Markies/Marksies etc, etc. Grin

Huge difference between going forward a proper food shop (and buying whatever the hell you like while you're there!) and going AGAIN to buy a few little bits you fancy.

We all need to Understand that OUR actions are enabling the virus to spread. OUR actions are resulting in people spending 15 hours in ambulances waiting to get into an over crowded hospital.

Yes we can all say it's the Hivts fault for underfunding the NHS & various stupid decisions since then

But right here, right now, the Only thing we can do, is take responsibility for OUR actions and limit as much contact as possible.

Not going into shops for unnecessary bits is an easy way to help to limit transmission.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 09/01/2021 16:34

I think that those of us that are not clinically vulnerable should not have food delivered or click and collect as those slots should be taken by those that are clinically vulnerable. So if you booked an extra delivery slot for a few "picky bits" that would be worse.

However, also we are only meant to be shopping as infrequently as possible so unless you are going to do a big shop you possibly shouldn't really. Mind you I have a family of 5 and my weekly big shop could be interpreted as panic buying so I don't think there is a right answer here.

Maybe go at a quieter time if such a thing exists..... It is fine to buy food and if the food you want is only at M&S then why not. Does anyone do their big shop at M&S? If we don't buy what we normally do from there then it will go bust and stop paying taxes and make people unemployed and if too many businesses do that then we won't have an NHS to look after us.

MintyMabel · 09/01/2021 16:35

Unrelated but I’ve always called it Markies . Up until I was 18 or 19 I think I thought that was it’s proper name !

We always did too. I hail from NE Scotland too.

SusannaSpider · 09/01/2021 16:38

The Asda makes it sound posher than it is.

Not when I say itGrin

MadameBlobby · 09/01/2021 16:39

@Sarcobaleno

Jeezo. What a bunch of life-sucking arseholes. Markies is a regional nickname for marks and spencer. Get over it. Any name for nibbles, picky bits etc is always a bit wanky. If she'd have said party food you'd all have kicked off she was having a party.

OP, go and get your picky bits and enjoy them, we all need to find small bits of enjoyment just now. If you're feeling guilty bung in a box of tampax and stop stressing.

Totally agree. Miserable fuckers.
CarlottaValdez · 09/01/2021 16:42

My mum calls it Markies - NE Scotland too!

MadameBlobby · 09/01/2021 16:43

@DimidDavilby

Am I living in a parallel universe where the pandemic isn't happening?

STAY THE FUCK AT HOME

Am I living in a parallel universe where buying food is no longer essential?
heidbuttsupper · 09/01/2021 16:45

Also central Scotland and its Markies!

PumpkinPieAlibi · 09/01/2021 16:48

I'm not British so you can imagine my confusion reading this thread title. Grin As a PP said, it does sound very infantile and 'cutesy'.

To answer the question, I suppose there's technically nothing illegal with going to Markies for the picky bits...Confused but considering the current state of COVID in the UK, it's a bit irresponsible.

Tiredmum100 · 09/01/2021 16:50

Wow. What horrible replies. Shocking that's how grown women act. OP you are not unreasonable to go to m&s, markies, marksies, marks and sepenser or what ever you want to call to call it. I frequently went there through the first lockdown to get bits I like from there. Sorry there appears to be so many nasty replies. Obviously lockdown is really getting to some people and is bringing out the worst of them. Enjoy your PICKY tea!!!

AlternativePerspective · 09/01/2021 16:52

The OP gets deliveries. She can get some bits delivered as part of her usual weekly shop.

It’s one thing buying bits while you’re actually there doing essential shopping, but non-essential journeys are discouraged for very good reasons, and going out to buy bits you could get from the supermarket where you have a delivery slot is non-essential.

And no, I haven’t been inside a shop since October, and that was once because I had to go to town to fetch DS a prescription when I actually Shouldn’t be going out as am vulnerable.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 09/01/2021 16:53

I'm also in Central Scotland and it's definitely Markies and I go there for picky bits too.

MissMarpleDarling · 09/01/2021 16:54

Do it! Needed cat food and the local coop had none so drove to sainsburys. Walked out with cat food and loads of junk food. Yummy :)

MissMarpleDarling · 09/01/2021 16:55

We call it Mark's here

Whatifitallgoesright · 09/01/2021 16:55

On a little lighter note I have some towels with the now defunct 'St Michael's' label on. Would any naive young hipster tosser buy them off me now due to their retro allure?

JeezyPeeps · 09/01/2021 16:55

This thread is more about light hearted piss taking than vitriol, keep your hair on, those throwing cunts and arseholes around

I was going to quote the main post that lead me to use the word 'arseholes' and ask what was lighthearted about it - but it has since been deleted by mumsnet.

Guess not everyone sees it the way you do.

PandemicPalava · 09/01/2021 16:58

God people are really horrible on here! Yes absolutely go! It will be a nice change and the food is lush

Aworldofmyown · 09/01/2021 17:00

We had a 'picky tea' New Years Eve. There are alot of miserable fuckers on here.

Anne1958 · 09/01/2021 17:00

I’m Scottish, the East cost, and have always referred to Markies.

LaMarschallin · 09/01/2021 17:00

SusannaSpider

I'd never noticed people saying "The Asda(s)" until DH pointed it out to me.
Now, of course, I hear it all the time.

Have you considered the potential inflammatory consequences of calling it (The) Asbo's? Wink

Persianparadise · 09/01/2021 17:00
