To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

My Dh gran says "up the Asda's" Grin

SusannaSpider · 09/01/2021 15:46

She means that saying “Asda” or “Tesco” is correct but she thinks saying “Asda’s” or “Tesco’s” is wrong.

I know. I thought by the same token The Asda ( said in my broad Lancashire accent) would be just as offensive.

MrsGrindah · 09/01/2021 15:47

I’m guessing Kenny Mo is Morrison’s?

RickiTarr · 09/01/2021 15:47

Oh Smile We need audio on here.

SusannaSpider · 09/01/2021 15:47

What shoo is Kenny Mo's referring to?

Morrisons

Happytentoes · 09/01/2021 15:47

Op I have trawled through 12 pages to tell you that I am going to Markies Aberdeen tomorrow too.
Probably the original one.
I will look out for you 😁

Markies · 09/01/2021 15:47

Asdas and Tesco’s is far worse than saying Markies. Makes me cringe.

JeezyPeeps · 09/01/2021 15:50

I did wonder if it was Morrisons, because I couldn't think of anything else it could be.

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 15:50

@Happytentoes. I’ll be the one wearing a mask and putting picky bits into my basket. Probably buy myself some yummy choccies and some beer for the hubbie

I suppose Asda could legitimately be Asdas as the name comes from Associated Dairies.

Desmondo2016 · 09/01/2021 15:51

Go and buy yourself some nice food OP and call it whatever you like. The general response on here is nothing short of hilarious.

ButterMeUpScotty · 09/01/2021 15:52

YANBU I would also love to go to Marksies for picky bits but can’t be arsed. YANBU for saying Marksies and Picky Bits either. So many plonkers on here!

RickiTarr · 09/01/2021 15:53

@SusannaSpider

I suppose Asda could legitimately be Asdas as the name comes from Associated Dairies.
When people do it as a blanket style it’s a barking back to “Messrs Bloggs” type business names, isn’t it? I can’t get worked up about it.
RickiTarr · 09/01/2021 15:53

Harking back, not barking. Blush

TheYellowOne · 09/01/2021 15:53

My Aberdonian colleagues call it Markies. I did think picky bits was more of an English phrase though. But you learn something new every day!

bilbodog · 09/01/2021 15:54

Brilliant thread OP - go and get your picky bits and come back and tell us what you got !

Butchyrestingface · 09/01/2021 15:56

Am I living in a parallel universe where the pandemic isn't happening?

If only you were living in a parallel universe, far, far from this one, given your upthread 'contributions'.

NearlyTheHolidays2 · 09/01/2021 15:56

Now's not the time to be breaking cover if you don't need to. Hospitals are about to be completely overwhelmed in the UK and it will be impossible to get medical attention (for anything) if needed. This new strain of the virus is far more contagious and it's just not worth the risk. Please stay home.

OnePotato2Potato · 09/01/2021 15:56

Urgh... mumsnet is so full of snobbery.
All these posted disgusted, howling, shocked and fainting at the use of words which are different to what they would use.

If you’d have thrown in some swear words that would probably have been more acceptable.

Glad to see class snobbery live and well here.

Doublefaced · 09/01/2021 15:57

@MysweetAudrina

Could be worse I overheard my dh finishing up a work call with the words okey doodles.
You’ve filed for divorce natch?
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 09/01/2021 15:57

OP This thread can only be made better if you come back later and tell us how much you enjoyed your picky bits Nom Nom! Grin

JillofTrades · 09/01/2021 16:00

Picky bits. Sounds like you are sitting there and picking at your bits. Not a good thing op.

SusannaSpider · 09/01/2021 16:09

I can’t get worked up about it.

I find it a bit of a shame, I love accents, dialects and regional variations. The person above who mentioned going out for 'messages' made me all warm and fuzzy, reminded me of my auntie who I haven't seen for ages.

Anyway I've got Jalapeno Bites and Hot and Spicy Prawns in oven, not Markies, but it's Mumsnet's fault.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 09/01/2021 16:18

@Butchyrestingface

Central Scotland here, and it’s Markies. grin I’ll sometimes say M&S if I’m trying to be less common.

I lived in Central Scotland a long time, and never heard it so-called. Always M&S, or Marks, and sometimes even (looking at you, mum) 'Marks and Sparks'.

Will be listening out for Markies/Marksies etc, etc. Grin

Ah now that takes me back...
it was almost always 'Marks & Sparks' growing up! ☺️
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 09/01/2021 16:22

Oh cantsleepwontsleep1 I'm distraught you feel that way, I was only thinking how much more enriched my life would be with you in it. Smile
