I agree that the fear of criminal liability for violence and deaths is behind a lot of this new restraint. Again, this is what we saw after Oklahoma City. You can't get these people to do the right thing unless they're personally going to be held accountable.

This is what the Democrats keep getting wrong. They want to uphold democratic norms and ethics by persuasion alone. But it's extremely hard to keep norms strong if there's no consequences for violating them.

BruceAndNosh · 12/01/2021 09:30

Despite the fact that he's going to the city of Alamo, not the famous mission 200 miles to the North, I'm pretty sure Trump will make copious references to THE Alamo, patriots, resistance and freedom.
If he was purely interested in the wall, his schedule would have said he was going to McAllen the neighbouring much larger conurbation

Yamayo · 12/01/2021 09:33

Why would Ivanka be invited to the inauguration? Is she really that self important that she assumes she will be?

I guess. After all she has managed to get herself invited everywhere else.

I suspect that is the one thing the Trump siblings will hate losing- all the perks (air force 1, secret service protection, speed dial to Fox) that they just took, against all the rules and without any consequences.

BruceAndNosh · 12/01/2021 09:34

@minou123

Will we hear from Trump today? From the news it seems he is off to see the wall.

This should be interesting, what he says, will the national press be therewith? what the press ask him. I'm looking forward to the press asking him some very difficult questions

I can't see him agreeing to take Press questions. Too problematic.

He'll definitely want to speak but I can't see how he can stop himself going down the "rigged election" route - it's too ingrained in his vocabulary.
I wonder will reputable news networks broadcast it live or more likely just edited sections? (I almost wrote highlights but that's not possible from a Trump speech)

merrymouse · 12/01/2021 09:37

I wonder will reputable news networks broadcast it live or more likely just edited sections?

I think that their legal departments will be advising against live coverage.

DGRossetti · 12/01/2021 09:43

I agree that the fear of criminal liability for violence and deaths is behind a lot of this new restraint.

Kinda suggests the law is working then ? That said I'd believe it's more to do with big name companies pulling adverts and sponsorship that will be the driver.

Something that has caught a few brands off-balance is the nature of the internet - and ad networks - means your brand can be compromised in the blink of an eye.

Imagine it it emerged Disney, or a similar "family oriented" brand was seen to be backing the calls for sedition ? I never trusted that mouse anyway.

@boatyardblues

I don’t know if the ‘ta da!’ posts have been deleted from Destiny’s Twitter link, but its maddeningly circular as each wave of new arrivals says the letters on the neanie have been covered up with a marker and someone patiently explains they haven’t for the nth time. 😫
Agreed. It’s a bit like some of the threads on MN at times “cancel the cheque”.
DGRossetti · 12/01/2021 10:25

@Furries

Just chuckled at Anderson Cooper commenting on Trump being disgruntled at his Twitter account etc being banned. He said along the lines of “well, if he’s got any important messages he wants us all to hear - he DOES have a press room in his house. Not many of us can say that” 😂
Which is a good pushback against all the "oooh he's being censored" line of low energy thinking.

In fact, hopefully as the smoke clears, some will start to ask WTF the President of the United States ever felt the need (yes, goes back to Obama) to engage on such a swamp as Twitter anyway. It's the equivalent of in pre-tech days patrolling every personals ad in publication ... (he says as a one time "LOOT"er Smile)

Arobase · 12/01/2021 10:25

in Trump's speech where he did the total U turn, there are sudden changes of focus which look very much as if those are the points when he went off piste or exploded at having to read out stuff on the autocue that he absolutely hated. So whoever persuaded him to do that speech and edited it is never going to allow him to take press questions where there is so much potential for him to say something that will guarantee his prosecution and damage his family and associates. The question is, of course, how much influence that person or people actually have over Trump.

Arobase · 12/01/2021 10:30

on an unrelated note, has Claig been around lately?

I was just thinking the other day that it would be quite entertaining if she was. Four years ago she was so convinced that Trump was going to be wonderful, Brexit was going to be wonderful, Corbyn was going to get into power and be wonderful, it would be fascinating to see her reaction to the current state of affairs.

As I like to say, when they go low, kick them in the balls.

It's only now, when it's too late, we realise that David Icke was right all along, and it's lizard people. They have super alien weapons capable of terrifying Donald Trump. (They could of course also use their powers to reinstate Trump by overturning the election, but that's a little bit above the average Trumpers IQ ...)

CaveMum · 12/01/2021 10:46

Don’t know if was mentioned overnight, but 2 Dems have tested positive for Covid following last week’s riot when they were forced to lockdown in a small room with lots of others.

Bonnie Watson Colman (75) and Pramila Jaypal (55) reported that several Republicans colleagues refused to wear masks in the room despite requests and offers of masks.

BruceAndNosh · 12/01/2021 11:05

The only way it would be safe for Trump to speak would be completely using autocue like he did during vaccine announcements. Of course when he relies totally on autocue, he sounds like a medicated zombie.

If he was to speak unfettered (he won't) my Bingo card includes
STEAL, RIGGED, SWAMP,
REMEMBER THE ALAMO, DAVY CROCKETT, PATRIOT
TWITTER, TWITTER, TWITTER (at this point someone yanks him off stage using a long pole with a hook on the end)

DGRossetti · 12/01/2021 11:06

Some ISPs have banned Twitter from their services, apparently

www.newsweek.com/internet-provider-restrict-access-facebook-twitter-customers-who-request-it-1560656

So to protest about a private company "censoring" the internet, a private company is ... "censoring" the internet.

Are we allowed to call people stupid and thick yet ?

I’m sure Michelle Obama can tell Dr Biden all she needs to know about the White House.

If you read Michelle Obama’s book Becoming there is a lovely passage where she talks about the FLOTUS handover to the WH , she met with Barbara Bush and her daughters, the Bush girls took the Obama girls under their wing, showed them all the best bits of the WH and BB was helpful and gave lots of good advice. It appears from what MO wrote that there has been a long standing tradition of outgoing FLOTUS doing similar handovers with grace and good humour.

I believe that MO tried to extend the courtesy to Melania but was brushed off.

I think Dr Biden will manage without being shown Melania’s walk in wardrobe and Donald’s secret sweetie stash cupboard.

Murdoch knows that once Trump is out of office he can return to his sweet spot of monetising outrage against the government.

This.

merrymouse · 12/01/2021 11:31

Agree - Jon Sopel pointed this out on the Americast podcast. It looks edited, so even autocue isn't safe.

Lweji · 12/01/2021 11:37

Not strictly Trump, but close.

Any offense? What about normalisation?

"In a statement, Mary Miller of Illinois said she “sincerely apologised for any offence” given when she told a crowd at the US Capitol: “Hitler was right on one thing. He said, ‘Whoever has the youth has the future.’ Our children are being propagandised.”"

Sorry, lost The Guardian link.

From a personal perspective, I hope Brexit doesn't end as badly as Trump and Corbyn's terms in office!

PerkingFaintly · 12/01/2021 11:42

I've noticed a real theme of "The Bad Guys want to do Bad Thing X... so we should do X first!"

AuldAlliance · 12/01/2021 11:45

Did Corbyn hold office?
