@Clicketyclick21

Do you think Arnie will throw his hat in the ring for 2024 as a republican candidate?
He's not eligible. You have to be a 'natural born US citizen'.
Clicketyclick21 · 10/01/2021 15:13

Oh yes I forgot about that. Trump made the same point about Obama even though he was born in the US but not the right skin tone.

AcrossthePond55 · 10/01/2021 15:15

I think that video was very moving and he certainly is a great communicator. But being a great communicator doesn't equal being great at governance. Reagan is proof of that.

He was a shitty governor when he was in office here in CA and I wouldn't want him as POTUS even if he was eligible. But I would like to see him become a 'figure' in the Republican Party. Unfortunately, he's not 'right' enough for them.

I think we've had enough of 'celebrities' in high places. At least for the time being.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 10/01/2021 15:18

I am impressed with Arnie, it needed someone to publicly call it what it is. It’s was a hard right fascist attempt to disrupt democracy. All the more credible coming from someone who has directly witnessed the aftermath of the Nazis.

ListeningQuietly · 10/01/2021 15:18

Across
I cannot see Arnie running for high office again
but his voice and the Nazi comparisons
might be enough to pull some people back from the brink
and give the sane people within the Law Enforcement bodies
the spine to start reorganising chains of command and communication
so that what happened on the 6th
NEVER happens again

NotaRealLawyer · 10/01/2021 15:21

Possibly Arnie's best performance on screen.

DGRossetti · 10/01/2021 15:29

The only thing that would have made it historic rather than memorable, would have been a conclusion where Arnie - as a constitution lovin' citizen - offered his support to help Biden in any way possible. Not as Republican to Democrat, but as American to American.

But I don't know his personal circumstances. I sense he's lucky to be here today.

Still it's an interesting intervention. I can see some hesitation on the more reflective Trumpers to a direct racist attack on Arnie, while the less restrained might just cause a retreat by some less cynical ?

Time will tell ...

I think he effectively did.
The son of a Nazi called the people who reject the electoral result Nazis

DGRossetti · 10/01/2021 15:33

It's interesting/curious that Arnie didn't mention it was Richard Nixon that inspired him to be a Republican ... I would have thought that would have been a good curveball ... "These guys are worse than Nixon ..."

dreamingbohemian · 10/01/2021 15:33

It's sort of what we were talking about, appealing to people's emotions instead of a factual argument.

Arnie talking about his drunk Nazi dad beating him, that's the kind of thing that may not 'convince' anyone to think differently, but might contribute to a gradual change of heart.

ListeningQuietly · 10/01/2021 15:36

DGR
The people he is trying to appeal to are not great on historical facts.
as dreaming says
it was about the feelz of regret later in life
and the chance to avoid that by doing the right thing now

borntobequiet · 10/01/2021 15:36

@NotaRealLawyer

Possibly Arnie's best performance on screen.
It was pitch perfect for the occasion and the audience.
PerkingFaintly · 10/01/2021 15:37

Eh, DGR? Arnie explicitly expressed support for Biden in that vid!

It was very strongly American to American, and Americans together.

A Republican publicly supporting the democracy in action. It really shouldn't be remarkable. Tragically, at the moment it's noteworthy.

Mittens030869 · 10/01/2021 15:41

Arnie was never a good actor IMO, he was complete typecast. The power of this video is that he wasn't acting, he was speaking from the heart. It was also very brave, in that in the past he's always kept quiet about his father's Nazi past.

It might convince some Trump supporters (though not the rioters, they wouldn't have listened most probably). A personal story is much more likely to sway people than political arguments, especially now, as we've become too polarised.

AcrossthePond55 · 10/01/2021 15:43

Arnie and Trump have had a 'contentious' relationship for years. It's well known that they can't stand each other.

So while hopefully his message will resonate with those Conservatives and Repugs who still have a vestige of a moral conscience and a sense of real patriotism, it's not going to move Scrotus's fan base one iota. To them Arnie's a 'traitor to the cause' because 'The Terminator' should have been 100% pro-Trump.

dreamingbohemian · 10/01/2021 15:44

Also the fact that he comes from this Nazi background and family, which was sad and violent, but he left that behind and created this whole new successful life for himself by doing so. That's a sort of subliminal message here I think.

Igotjelly · 10/01/2021 15:46

That Arnie video was very moving. I was recently reading a book about kristelnacht and the comparison was spot on.

dreamingbohemian · 10/01/2021 15:47

I agree that Trump has a hardcore base that can't be won over by anyone.

I think this is where the Democrats have gone wrong too, well some of them. You can't appeal to that hardcore base and there's no point wasting time trying.

You need to reach out somehow to people who can still be swayed and try to contain the damage from those who can't.

DGRossetti · 10/01/2021 15:52

I suspect Arnie saw Trump for what he was instantly.

Grrrpredictivetex · 10/01/2021 15:54

Question please. Is it possible to refrain from charging the mob just yet so that they can't be pardoned?

Or am I getting carried away with myself.

You need to neutralise them every single time at the ballot box.

These past few weeks have seen the usual tactics of fascists (and bolsheviks) of trying to bypass the ballot box by breeding a distrust in the results. Losers consent becomes winners defeat ....

People (and I'll be the first) also need to accept their own part in all of this. Because I will guarantee that in the past we have all done nothing at some point in time because we found we agreed with the bending of the rules "in this case". And that's another part of how Trump got in. Supported by people who were willing to turn a blind eye when it was other people that were being shat on.

However, all roads lead to the media.

Depends on what charges - federal ones could be pardoned by Trump in a "I pardon all those that were involved in any incidents contrary to federal law om (or from) 6th January to this day ". Similar to the draft dodgers pardon in the 1970s.

But it wouldn't apply to any state crimes, or subsequent crimes.

I have heard someone (on cnn I think) say that they look for other charges as well as for the main federal one. basically any single thing they could nail down, including taxes.

Which risks straying into abuse of process ...

"On another note... good news that Parler, as of today, has no platform. Google, Apple and now Amazon have washed their hands of them."
I would be bitterly disappointed if the worlds scam merchants hadn't gotten their malware infected variants ready for people to download from dodgy sites and sideload into their Fruity Fondleslabs etc, to be pwned by the Russians and Chinese.
Of course if you warned them of that danger, they'd claim that you were "one of them ..."

This made me grin like a loon. Yes, yes, YES!

Of course there is always the possibility of using the actual website, but that would be hard work.

On a different matter, I too lived in the area of Oxfordshire/Northants which had a lot of American servicemen in it; a lot of them drove huge cars and ignored the traffic laws, and thought the locals were beneath their notice. We didn't happen to see the racism in our village, mostly because it was exclusively white-occupied in those days, but I'm sure from the general attitude a lot of them had that it would have been present if there had ever been any occasion for it. (This is nastily judgmental of me, but honestly they didn't endear themselves much.)

Two of my children are leaving the forces at the moment; each had to give a year's notice of resigning their commission, and each has been sent on courses to help them adjust to civilian life. But I don't know what is available for non-officers, and a shockingly high percentage of the homeless in this country were ex-services when the figures were last collected.
