To not want my son to play Among Us any more after discovering this

My 8 year old recently started playing this game with his friends. It has skyrocketed in popularity recently. I was fine with this because although it isnt educational, it is social and arguably teaches important life skills. However, whilst watching him running around the Skeld sabotaging stuff it occurred to me.... Everyone in the game is wearing spacesuits with bulky oxygen packs on their backs. However, if the oxygen is sabotaged and they dont fix it in time then everyone dies. WHY? If the spacesuits arent actually doing anything then why cant they take them of and check to see who is the murderous alien. If the spacesuits are doing something then why does everyone panic when the oxygen goes of.
I could overlook the leaves in the garbage disposal since maybe they are space-leaves, but everytime I watch him play now I get incredibly annoyed.
So AIBU to delete the app on the grounds of its shocking lack of realism and logic???

Hmm... strange adults (who I assume are mostly, if not all women) playing games with underage children (who I assume don't know your age) while warning their DCs to only play with known children/adults. I can see how this will look if the tables were turned. Nothing to see here at all.

@Mustbe3ormorecharacters

I am NOT sus. Follow me into electrical and watch me do a task there (mwah ha haaaaaaahhh)

I am mostly playing with my own children and their friends and family. Plus, I think so long as the adults (and children) arent swearing on the game or being innapropriate it isnt a problem. It isnt a game specifically targetted at children.

When I play I have no idea what age other participants are (unless they say). They are a colour and a username only.

@thelegohooverer

I get it OP. I itch to ban Lego from my house because the lack of consistency of scale makes me twitch. Especially those stupid giant mugs.
Minecraft doors. Look at me, I just recreated St Peter's Basilica, sorry that the doors look like a special mouse entrance
Stilllivinginazoo · 07/01/2021 11:41

One of my DC have had hackers message them using their real name

That's worrying! I asked DS1. He said they are oxygen packs but he doesn't know why you can then kill by sabotaging O2. He then said "luckily I won't use among us logic in my gcse exam" Not that he'll be doing gcse exams, but I understood his meaning Grin

Eh? Why is it strange that adults are playing a game? As long as noone is being inappropriate, why does it matter what age people are?

How would they do that? You don't even register to play, so it's not like someone has accessed an email address that might say their name.
KimNotEllen · 07/01/2021 11:51

I don't know why you would think it's mostly women who play?

ZaraTheWonderDog · 07/01/2021 12:02

I didn't think there was private messaging in Among Us? There's group chat at the beginning of each game and during meetings but that's it.

Def not private messaging.

I mostly play with dc and their friends. If we do open the game up to strangers I have no idea how old they are. The onus to keep them safe online is on their parents not me. I allow my dc to play because they are 14 and 16 and very sensible online. They kick people with overly rude names, or who use homophobic or racist language. I've also (finally) got through to them why the use of the 'r' word is unacceptable and they kick for that too.
Stilllivinginazoo · 07/01/2021 12:46

Terrified her

Comefromaway · 07/01/2021 13:05

That sounds more like a real life friend who was also in that game and who who knew/guessed her Among Us username.

DumplingsAndStew · 07/01/2021 13:07

Or that she had already given out her name.

Stilllivinginazoo · 07/01/2021 13:30

At 16 she admits to NO ONE not even siblings, she was playing

My son is 16. Among Us is really cool amongst his friends.
DumplingsAndStew · 07/01/2021 13:38

Its just not possible. There is no way for anyone on Among Us to access your child's real name from the game, unless its in your playing name or you give it out.

ZaraTheWonderDog · 07/01/2021 14:39

You don't even have a user profile on there, you can literally make up any old name you want every time you play.

Jenasaurus · 07/01/2021 15:03

I must confess to enjoying this game and have purchased a pet :)

My first time playing we had a zoom chat along side (see below )

Stompythedinosaur · 07/01/2021 15:04

I think the fact that you are talking to strangers online makes this game unsuitable for young kids.

Jenasaurus · 07/01/2021 15:04

and I am 55 but only play with my adult children, helped me a lot in lockdown and stop me feeling lonely
