To not want my son to play Among Us any more after discovering this

apalledandshocked · 07/01/2021 00:35

My 8 year old recently started playing this game with his friends. It has skyrocketed in popularity recently. I was fine with this because although it isnt educational, it is social and arguably teaches important life skills. However, whilst watching him running around the Skeld sabotaging stuff it occurred to me.... Everyone in the game is wearing spacesuits with bulky oxygen packs on their backs. However, if the oxygen is sabotaged and they dont fix it in time then everyone dies. WHY? If the spacesuits arent actually doing anything then why cant they take them of and check to see who is the murderous alien. If the spacesuits are doing something then why does everyone panic when the oxygen goes of.
I could overlook the leaves in the garbage disposal since maybe they are space-leaves, but everytime I watch him play now I get incredibly annoyed.
So AIBU to delete the app on the grounds of its shocking lack of realism and logic???

@CloseSchoolsProtecttheNHS "Apalledandshocked was not the imposter" (as I float mournfully past the window)

Omg are you for real @apalledandshocked ?

PolarExpressislate · 07/01/2021 03:03

@FoxyTheFox

Interesting theory. Makes you look hella sus though, bro...
I think the OP is an Imposter! 😂😂
Bunbunbunny · 07/01/2021 03:18

I only starting playing just before Xmas, I'm awful as imp! I did have one great game as imp where I vented into room with two other players. Killed one and reported straight away accusing them of killing other, said I walked in on them and they believed me! I was voted out next round Grin
I joined the Reddit discord to find games as some of the chat is disturbing in public

AldiIsla · 07/01/2021 03:22

Sounds Sus.

hellsbells77 · 07/01/2021 04:00

Not wanting to be THAT parent but you may not realise that Among Us has a 10+ age rating (was 16+ until quite recently).

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 07/01/2021 04:11

@WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo

I've just found there's a 'freeplay' mode so you can run around and do tasks without being killed Grin

My Mum printed a map off so when we get to the discussion bit she can work out where she was Grin

Are you one of my children?!

Printing a map is just sensible.

FallingStar21 · 07/01/2021 04:32

Sorry, you have a problem with the "realism" of a game and that's why your son should not be playing? FFS

RizzleDrizzle · 07/01/2021 05:01

Er op it’s possiable that their planet has the same atomspheric make up as earth!

Why are you ruling out another planet having the same mixture of gasses in another solid system?

Isn’t that what we’re constantly looking for a planet that would support human life? For that to be the case it would have to have the same atomsheric make up as earth or at least similar enough to survive, that bing the case the creatures from that planet would need the same air make up as us!

They are from earth though. For the spacesuit-shaped alien theory to hold then they would need to be from another planet

The Doctor (from doctor who) is a shape shifting time travelling alien with two hearts yet still needs the same air as us!
And yes there are numerous references to needing an earth air in the show,

He wears a space suit, ten has told companions about atomphere shells (such as when the the hospital was transported to the moon in “smith and Jones” and I think he mentions it to rose in an earlier episode.

Some aliens need the same air make up as on earth

RizzleDrizzle · 07/01/2021 05:09

Here you go OP an alien that breathes the same air as us!

Just because they come from a different planet doesn’t mean they don’t need the same air as us!

Isn’t Spock from a different planet too and he breathed the same air as humans

Mally2020 · 07/01/2021 05:09

wtf we love among us...however at 8 you should be monitoring his internet usage and making sure he is only playing on it with people they know

It annoyed me how often thier soace suits had helmets just just lifted off with a flap of cloth/log neck.

Thats not pressure tight!!

Also they use soft space suits in vaccum/on mars.

A pressurised soft suit would just leave you spread Eagle in an inflated balloon!!

RizzleDrizzle · 07/01/2021 05:19

@Sinful8 four in a proper spacesuit is that better?!

I might argue that proves old who is better than nu who (runs away ... actually really like nu who)

But, yes I’m not sure how much the soft suit helps, although weren’t the humans on planet of the odd also wearing soft suits so maybe the air pressure was equal to earth just not the air make up?

On mars I’ll give you that possiably isn’t the best idea!

Shhhh ts like the favorite child, they can never know :pXmas Grin

But yeah I think ots more limited props so they get reused the ood episode was pressurised but water on Mars i think was outside (and spiders on the moon)

iloveeverykindofcat · 07/01/2021 06:31

OP sus.

Sargass0 · 07/01/2021 06:34

@ FoxyTheFox Grin Brilliant!

Self report

OP definitely sus

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 07/01/2021 06:49

My kids have been nagging me to play Among Us for months. Finally I caved - was The Imposter first time round. Whilst trying to get to grips with the controls I accidentally killed DS2 (who thankfully thought it was funny!). Somehow managed to win but that was more luck than design!

ZaraTheWonderDog · 07/01/2021 07:24

Being the Imposter brings me out in a cold sweat. I always get nervous and kill someone in front of a camera. I like being crew and doing my tasks. And I always get a fright when I die!

Megalodon · 07/01/2021 07:33

In such a massive universe and billions of years of evolution later, it must have got to the point where there will be creatures that may look similar or identical to Earth's versions of humans and breathe the same type of air. There are only so many possibilities, evolutionary lines, and some our little brains can't even comprehend. Maybe there are little spacesuit shaped men with backpacks and their lungs don't work same as us. Maybe they aren't necessarily lungs in there. I thought they were minions tbh Grin

AlternativePerspective · 07/01/2021 07:34

😂😂😂😂

Anycrispsleft · 07/01/2021 07:41

I think that's a really interesting question about the aliens not needing oxygen to breathe. There are bacteria (like the ones that live near underwater volcanoes) that can use reduced forms of sulfur and metals to get their energy, instead of O2 and sugars, so I guess we know at least that life forms with significantly different biochemistry to ours are.possible - but oxygen-consuming life has been massively more successful on our planet, so maybe it's reasonable to assume that it would end up being the dominant biochemistry on any similar planet?

DS switches the chat to Japanese. There might be inappropriate language, but he can't read it.
