To not want my son to play Among Us any more after discovering this

apalledandshocked · 07/01/2021 00:35

My 8 year old recently started playing this game with his friends. It has skyrocketed in popularity recently. I was fine with this because although it isnt educational, it is social and arguably teaches important life skills. However, whilst watching him running around the Skeld sabotaging stuff it occurred to me.... Everyone in the game is wearing spacesuits with bulky oxygen packs on their backs. However, if the oxygen is sabotaged and they dont fix it in time then everyone dies. WHY? If the spacesuits arent actually doing anything then why cant they take them of and check to see who is the murderous alien. If the spacesuits are doing something then why does everyone panic when the oxygen goes of.
I could overlook the leaves in the garbage disposal since maybe they are space-leaves, but everytime I watch him play now I get incredibly annoyed.
So AIBU to delete the app on the grounds of its shocking lack of realism and logic???

@DumplingsAndStew

Or that she had already given out her name.
It is technically just about possible that if someone was able to hack the Among Us servers and get the IP address the daughter was using and then use that to get the address of their house, and then cross reference with other information to get a name. Technically just about possible but a hell of a lot of work* and I dont see how you could have the time within the space of a game to do all that. Also there is no way you could know which family member was playing. What is more likely:
  1. She was using a distinctive user name she uses a lot for other stuff and someone from real life saw it and took a lucky quess - possible
  2. Her actual computer is hacked (more likely than the among us servers) but then why would someone use that just to freak her out once on among us? - unlikely
  3. Someone took a completely lucky guess/thought it was a friend with a similar name. It seems extremely improbable but if you think of all the people playing Among Us the odds of it happening once among all those people are high, even with an unnusual name - possible
  4. A sibling, playing in the same house, deciding to freak her out - most likely
  5. She did give her name/personal info - also quite likely

*this would be easier if you already had info linked to your IP address. Have you tried looking it up and seeing what information you get?

I mean, people do similar shit on other games, but they tend to be longer games with more long-lasting user profiles so its easier to do. Among Us games are usually over in a few minutes.

@Comefromaway "My son is 16. Among Us is really cool amongst his friends."

I think Among Us was really cool. Unfortunately I fear the fact it is being discussed on mumsnet might mark the beginning of the end (sorry)

To not want my son to play Among Us any more after discovering this
Jenasaurus · 07/01/2021 21:45

Ok, when everyone arrives we can set up the game as we want it, ie annonymous voting, visual tasks, discussion time and player speed etc :)

Wheresmykimchi · 07/01/2021 21:47

@ClaireP20

Personally I'd let him play. He's going through enough at the moment with no school, no physical interaction with friends, having to stay at home (and in the constant spotlight of his parents' gaze..). You're clearly a good and interested parent, so I think he'd be fine as long as you keep an eye on who he's playing with. I'm assuming he's playing with friends.

HOWEVER, I just stopped my 7 year old playing because he was on the laptop, and I don't know who he is playing with (random strangers, because as you know they play in online groups) so I was watching over his shoulder, and one of the other kids (i presume a child, but who knows!) said in a message 'fucking crap' and 'stupid homo'. So that's turned off, and tomorrow I'll have to pretend the laptop is broken and hope he forgets the game.....because he's not going back on it until he's older and gets friends to play with...

Did you read the OP Grin
KimNotEllen · 08/01/2021 10:23

I would be up for that too

Comefromaway · 08/01/2021 10:33

PoppinShoppin · 08/01/2021 17:29

Are you for real OP @apalledandshocked?
It's a game and your kid is a CHILD.... who should be allowed to PLAY and even if ENCOURAGED TO PLAY IMAGINARY GAMES
