To not want my son to play Among Us any more after discovering this

My 8 year old recently started playing this game with his friends. It has skyrocketed in popularity recently. I was fine with this because although it isnt educational, it is social and arguably teaches important life skills. However, whilst watching him running around the Skeld sabotaging stuff it occurred to me.... Everyone in the game is wearing spacesuits with bulky oxygen packs on their backs. However, if the oxygen is sabotaged and they dont fix it in time then everyone dies. WHY? If the spacesuits arent actually doing anything then why cant they take them of and check to see who is the murderous alien. If the spacesuits are doing something then why does everyone panic when the oxygen goes of.
I could overlook the leaves in the garbage disposal since maybe they are space-leaves, but everytime I watch him play now I get incredibly annoyed.
So AIBU to delete the app on the grounds of its shocking lack of realism and logic???

@Sinful8 I’m not sure it is props because 11 was sucnifantly taller than 10, and had to get new orange soft suit I think 12 wore 10’s though!

So why not just get 11 a proper suit?!?!

Maybe however the question should be how do the companions breathe on these planets without helmets?

S111n20 · 07/01/2021 08:01

YABU it’s just a game

MardyBicardi · 07/01/2021 09:10

A couple of people had a right old bun fight the other day because one of them “kicked” the other.
I have to admit that I am still not 100% what kicking entails, I’m such a noob.

HappyNewYear2021 · 07/01/2021 09:15

If you all do your tasks you get victory.... as long as the imposters don't kill you first.

purpletrees16 · 07/01/2021 09:19

This has to be my favourite reason ever for not allowing a video game! Surely there’s education in him asking these questions?

Among us was made on a shoestring budget by about 4 people - it’s the kind of program that a teenager/adult could see themselves making with a group of friends if they are into game design rather than being worked 120hr weeks in crunch time for companies that fire you when your mental health collapses from stress. It’s also really fun with friends - get a group of your parents on zoom with the kids and all play together and it’s like an extended boardgame party.

Theonlyoneiknow · 07/01/2021 09:22

DS loves this game but I had no idea he was playing with strangers until recently. He really struggles socially at school so has no friends he can contact to play with. Is there any other way I can make this safe for him to play? He is 10. Thanks :)

SpiderGwen · 07/01/2021 09:35

We play as an extended family and do voice chat via Discord. 10 of us from age 8 to 78. It’s been such a big part of us getting ‘together’ over the past few weeks.

I totally suck at being the imposter.

MardyBicardi · 07/01/2021 09:37

I am crap at being the imposter too, I panic and kill people really quickly.

DoTheNextRightThing · 07/01/2021 09:55

Appalledandshocked is sus.

But now that you've pointed that out, I won't be able to not think about it when the oxygen is sabotaged. Thanks OP. AngryGrin

FoxyTheFox · 07/01/2021 10:02

@MardyBicardi "kicking" is when you boot someone out of the game. When my DC play I get them to set up their own room so they're together before they open it to other players, that way they have admin controls so if anyone starts swearing or being inappropriate they can kick them from the game.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 07/01/2021 10:14

YABU, and slightly sus.

:o

Quite a few people on this thread with a sense of humour failure, I see!

And then someone immediately reports the body with me next to it and my heart sinks into my stomach!
Gracesquirrel · 07/01/2021 10:18

I enjoy playing the Hide & Seek version - it can be really frustrating when some crewmates don't really know the rules and keep reporting bodies or they don't vent to identify themselves if they are the Imposter but if you get a room with 10 people who all know the rules it can be great fun.

Aposterhasnoname · 07/01/2021 10:19

Well then, why do they need oxygen in the first place? It seems a huge coinicidence they need to breath the same air as us.

Pfft, have you never watched sci fi? It’s a well
Known fact that not only do aliens breath the same air as us, they also eat similar food and speak English.

DumplingsAndStew · 07/01/2021 10:37

I honestly had no idea how many adults play, I always feel so old 😅

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 07/01/2021 10:41

Yabu and sus.

Oh god DD1 is obsessed with playing that mode!

I really really dinned into her that if she got allowed it - it had a chat function and I was really uneasy allowing her on it - so only in the same room in the house we are, and the first sign of anything nonsense wise in chat and she leaves... so now she goes "he tried to say a swear word so I left"... "they're not nice so I'm outta here"

thelegohooverer · 07/01/2021 11:10

I get it OP. I itch to ban Lego from my house because the lack of consistency of scale makes me twitch. Especially those stupid giant mugs.

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/01/2021 11:12

HAHAHAHA. Lockdown getting to you hun?

22Giraffes · 07/01/2021 11:13

I'm useless at being imp, somehow I always manage to self report the body as soon as I've killed, there's only so many times you can pretend to be first on the scene! Blush

SoupDragon · 07/01/2021 11:15

My involvement in Among Us is purely from crocheting the little characters. I assumed they were just backpacks, not oxygen tanks.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 07/01/2021 11:15

@DumplingsAndStew

I honestly had no idea how many adults play, I always feel so old 😅
I got told by a random that I wasn't really an adult (its all I'd say when they asked my age) because "why would adults want to play kids games" and "adults aren't into gaming" Poor kid obviously didn't realise that my age group is the first one that really had any form of console. Grin

@Namechangeforthis88 how does your son play if he can't speak the language?

EuphieKat · 07/01/2021 11:16

I can’t make head nor tail of it...I think I’m
Showing my age, but my kids (11 and 13) love it. We have the swear words blanked out too. It’s nice for them to be able to play against family members in different parts of the country. They sometimes play while talking remotely to their friends, so it’s quite good socially. Still no clue what’s going on, though!!

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 07/01/2021 11:16

I also thought they were backpacks. Plus they have no arms to actually do the tasks.
