greenshoots I agree.... in that how come the Capitol Police were so soft with the terrorists/protestors?
I could've told them this was going to happen

Yes - and that is the greatest worry of all in my view.
And by extension does Biden actually have the support of the army and police?

From where I am sitting, as an observer from afar - the US has a much bigger problem than what happened last night.

It seemed to me that last night was 'allowed' to happen. Too many lapses, far too many hours passed with little or no response from those that should have been protecting Capitol Hill.
Trump does not have the authority to hold back the police and security services, and did not attempt to do so as far as could tell last night.

So why didn't the police and national guard show up on time, and in a way that was coordinated? Why was it such a terrible sham of a response? How on earth did the police force end up standing there with only a can of pepper spray the size of a diet coke can for protection?

There has been a grotesque dereliction of duty somewhere along the line in terms of security and protection, and my guess is that it was not an accident at all, but a deliberate act to sabotage the democratic process last night.

Roussette · 07/01/2021 09:11

As soon as it was obvious that many more thousands had turned up rather than the estimated 10,000?

I don't understand. They were there at 10am, 11am, noon. I watched a news report at 11am with a reporters saying the crowds were huge. Why wasn't this taken into account, they were there for a reason. To listen to direction from Trump

KaptainKaveman · 07/01/2021 09:12

This has been a long time coming. Did you see some of those protesters carrying Confederate flags? Overturning this election is just the start. It's all about secession, IMO.

It isn't likely to get better. The MAGAs are so emboldened now. They will push for some of their states to secede, I suspect. They will invite other MAGAs to come and live in their ultra-right wing states and the civil war will commence in earnest as secession and independence of certain states becomes the goal. America is clearly on a path towards civil war. Again. The only thing that could possibly rein it back would be an invasion from an external enemy. And let's face it, the US has plenty of those - very powerful ones.

mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 09:13

Clearly not every Trump supporter is a thug and a criminal even if you don't agree with their politics.

Anyone who is still a Trump supporter after today's performance should be suspected of sympathy with insurrectionists. It is absolutely clear after today that continuing to support Trump means believing that the election was stolen, and refusal to accept the legitimacy of the Biden election victory. It is time for the Republican party and all Republican voters to publicly rebuke Donald Trump and everything he stands for. His 'politics' is repugnant and that should be stated very forcefully.

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 09:13

Roussette Exactly. It was obvious at 11am. Army arrived around 4pm.

CrotchBurn · 07/01/2021 09:14

To clarify I think it was a double effort with both trump and Biden working together to stage it, as it works to both their advantages.
For Biden, it makes trump supporters look dangerously insane
For Trump, it makes his party look like the party of action

Theres no other explanation for such an OTT and uncontrolled event.

The cable ties really tipped me over into thinking it was all staged. Because obviously you'd be wandering around with a bunch of cable ties as opposed to keeping them in your bag in this age of mass surveillance 🤨

cbt944 · 07/01/2021 09:16

Jaysus! We'll run out of tinfoil soon.

Roussette · 07/01/2021 09:16

The MAGAs are so emboldened now

So agree with this. Listening to interviews with these terrorists/protestors they are beyond jubilant. They have made a point. They call themselves 'revolutionaries'

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 09:16

I think we have to be very worried that this is just the start.

The US needs to prepare for a time of great unrest.

I myself, am absolutely totally gutted for them. It is indeed a brilliant young country that deserves more than the carnage we saw yesterday. I hope they have made many arrests, and I hope they are all charged with the highest possible offences. But I am concerned that it is not the so called domestic terrorists we need to worry about, but the movement underneath them.

Justiceishalfblind · 07/01/2021 09:17

My DH is American so he and his (politically divided) family are very upset by the scenes.
I'm not, so for me there isn' this visceral feeling.

for me it's a case of "has Biden been damaged?" "has Trump been damaged?" And the answers are no and yes respectively.

I appreciate it was cockup not skill but in truth it's great that there was so little violence and that the protestors just wandered around looking idiotic. If we were waking up today to cries of martyrdom, we'd have a real problem.

Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.

Roussette · 07/01/2021 09:18

CrotchBurn there is not enough tinfoil in the world to support your statement that Trump and Biden worked together to make yesterday happen!

UsedtobeDGR · 07/01/2021 09:18

Just popping in (username says it all)

Not sure what's going on at MNHQ, but here I am ...

Basecamp65 · 07/01/2021 09:18

This event showed that the problems in America go so deep

We spoke throughout the events unfolding how different the response would have been if the rioters were black.

Even the speeches and political comments were about sedition, anti democracy etc not plain CRIMINALITY like it was when BLM were marching.

The real test will be how much time is spent afterwards hunting down the ring leaders and the most active - they were filming it on their phones so the evidence of involvement will be easy to get. After BLM they used every available resource to try and identify the ring leaders and those inciting the violence

lets see how many are bought to justice - that will really tell you how broken the USA is.

CrotchBurn · 07/01/2021 09:18

Are you going to explain why my thoughts are implausible or just act like I'm a conspiracy theorist? 🤔

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/01/2021 09:19

There was an approved event led by Trump in the morning. That had permission but it was only supposed to be 5000.
Perhaps the police should have anticipated more turning up.
I can forgive the police for not anticipating that the current POTUS would tell them to march to the Capitol.

borntobequiet · 07/01/2021 09:20

It’s worth repeating: this situation has been predicted or at least speculated about on these (Trump) threads for at least the last four years. It’s upsetting but unsurprising for anyone who has been watching what has been going on. The surprise has been in the ease with which the mob was able to access one of the most iconic buildings in the United States, the literal centre of its legislative structure, at such a pivotal moment in its constitutional process.
Platitudinous and wholly redundant advice to posters to educate themselves and consider a range of different views and interpretations of the situation is bound to irritate. In charity, one might consider that those offering such advice are unfamiliar with the discussions that have been going on here for a long, long time, but I’m more inclined to believe otherwise.

IamTomHanks · 07/01/2021 09:20

Are you going to explain why my thoughts are implausible or just act like I'm a conspiracy theorist?

Because it's the equivalent of saying Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler got together to plan WWII because it was a win-win situation for the the both of them. They didn't and it wasn't.

kirinm · 07/01/2021 09:21

@Icanseegreenshoots

God I long for an ignore button

Summarising perfectly why we are where we are today.

You can not simply ignore every view that is different from yours. You fail to educate yourself in other views, and then you become myopic rather quickly. Incapable of assessing neutrally.

Do you show this level of empathy for all terrorists or just white supremacists? Because all terrorists believe they've not been listened to or they are the ignored minority.

Stop smoking crack.

What actual power did Biden have in this? Working together?

Thats conspiracy theory nonsense and deserving of slapping down hard.

Trump incited his supporters after 4 years of encouraging the establishment of milita and weaponsing racism for his own political agenda.

What is so hard to understand here? Apart from trying to be a source of disinformation.

Biden has ZERO actual power until 20th Jan.

frumpety · 07/01/2021 09:23

Can't help looking at the two people in the front of the shot posted by RedToothBrush , you have one person very much dressed for a spot of nefarious activity, camo and body armour, gloves and cable ties, nimbly hopping over the barrier and the other wearing a purple hoody, bobble hat and their little rucksack on back to front, clearly pondering how to get over without doing themselves an injury. A bit incongruous as partners in crime ?

See my post above. You are a conspiracy theorist.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/01/2021 09:24

"It is absolutely clear after today that continuing to support Trump means believing that the election was stolen, and refusal to accept the legitimacy of the Biden election victory." But did you see that performance in Congress after the domestic terrorists invaded the Capitol building, @mathanxiety? Many Republicans carried on trying to abnegate the votes of the Electoral College whilst continuing to pretend they believe the election results are fraudulent and illegal this time round. There is truly something rotten in the State of Denmark that this still happened yesterday after everything that had preceded it. As Simon Schama said "It's very simple - the President of the United States has attacked the United States"

CrotchBurn · 07/01/2021 09:24

@IamTomHanks
But didn't something like this happen in the summer? I'm not talking about the BLM protestors, I'm talking about trumps far right troops getting uncomfortably close. I wasnt really following as I say, but I remember seeing a picture where they'd infiltrated something or gotten uncomfortably close.

So why the hell wouldnt you assume it would happen again?

Sorry but none of it makes sense to me.
