Just woken up after a short sleep to see the latest. Good grief.

By the way, those talking about Trump's mental health earlier, to be declared mentally not sane and therefore not fit to plead, is a definite decision in U.K. I believe. In that a defendant did not know at the time of offence that it was wrong. As opposed to knowing it was wrong but doing it anyway.

Sorry badly worded. But I presume similar in USA federally?

tobee · 07/01/2021 06:59

*definite determination

Lweji · 07/01/2021 07:05

Is this still going on? Hmm

I could have been impressed by last night's Graham's speech if he hadn't contributed to the election fraud conspiracies.

Presumably Mayor Bowser has made this decision in consultation with police and security officials both local and Federal, and it is based on credible intelligence.

Her own intelligence should be enough. It's clear that the Inauguration will be a target day as well.

TurquoiseBaubles · 07/01/2021 07:16

I'm up now and they are still going Shock.

This thread is worth looking at: twitter.com/RespectableLaw/status/1347055062284120064

It's extraordinary that a senator (Matt Gaetz) should stand up in the senate and say that the rioters weren't Trump supporters without at least checking his facts. It's pathetic

BabyLlamaZen · 07/01/2021 07:16

I don't understand how they all got in. Lack of security? You'd think more would be shot. Trump controls everything and it's so creepy.

borntobequiet · 07/01/2021 07:17

Catching up. Amazed to see posters simultaneously ignorant enough to confuse Washington State and D.C. and stupid enough to post comments on here displaying that ignorance (re open carry).
This sort of violence if Trump lost the election has been predicted (or at least thought likely enough to happen) on these threads for a long time now, as a PP mentioned, Charlottesville alone was a good indicator. Best wishes to all in the US and thanks to knowledgeable people on here who have educated me in US politics.

NEWS: Twitter says Trump removed the offending tweets that led to his suspension and Twitter will restore @realDonaldTrump access after 12-hour block, per @business

TurquoiseBaubles · 07/01/2021 07:18

The New Zealand farmers have threads on this. I think they could be very useful to the US police, if of course the police are interested in identifying the rioters, which I'm beginning to doubt Hmm

TurquoiseBaubles · 07/01/2021 07:21

Pretty much every republican I've seen speaking tonight is wearing a mask under the nose. It's really disgusting how little respect they have for anyone.

TurquoiseBaubles · 07/01/2021 07:36

Just watching the house vote on Pennsylvania (I think) - how the hell can so many Republican members justify voting against a legitimate election. At least in the Senate there are only 6 of them, in the houseso far 3/4 of the Republicans are voting to overturn the result Shock.

Maybe they need to get rid of this altogether and just have the popular vote full stop.

tobee · 07/01/2021 07:39

Small thing but why are Sky News quoting Obama (and Johnson, Graham, AOC) commenting on this accompanied by pictures of them grinning?

CaveMum · 07/01/2021 07:39

Fastest moving thread since Election Night here! Fingers crossed that even if they can’t start the process of invoking the 25th DT has walled himself up in the Residence with no social media access thus making himself an irrelevance.

tobee · 07/01/2021 07:40

Looks like he'll be back soon on sm

Mypathtriedtokillme · 07/01/2021 07:41

One of the Republican Senators made that exact recommendation of dumping the electoral college as they have put grown it. (Wish I had caught his name but I had just flicked into the New York times live feed from US senate

Mypathtriedtokillme · 07/01/2021 07:42

Out not put.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 07/01/2021 07:45

I feel depressed that as a foreigner I know more about the US election process and states than the people who live there an actually got to vote.

Igotjelly · 07/01/2021 07:49

CNN pointing out that impeachment unlikely to be possible in the time left but should be pursued as it prevents him being able to run again

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 07:49

The endless CNN coverage calling the protesters 'disgusting' 'terrorists' and all the rest is not helping at all. Do they not realise this will only add fuel to the flames? Ditto Biden's speech.

What actually needs to happen is dialogue at this stage, people incite violence and protest when they feel ignored, marginalised and unheard.

Biden needs to get a grip on this quickly. There are millions of disenchanted voters that feel seriously aggrieved. The right thing to do is to tell them that he stands for all of America, including them, and their needs will be listened to - they will continue to be represented and he will continue to unify the whole country. It is imperative that a mature and considered approach now takes place, otherwise the country can look forward to a civil war.

You have to take everyone with you - as far as possible. A fracture of this magnitude, does not need insults hurling around on live TV, screeching politicians adding to the chaos, but a thoughtful road map to bring these people back on board, to talk them down and show them that a Biden administration can and will be there for the whole country including them.

Roasteros · 07/01/2021 07:53

"It's extraordinary that a senator (Matt Gaetz) should stand up in the senate and say that the rioters weren't Trump supporters without at least checking his facts. It's pathetic"

He has shown his lack of a spine on many occasions. He is an opportunist, only
concerned with his own political career. No moral fibre at all.

tobee · 07/01/2021 07:53

Again with the argument "you made me vote that way"

tobee · 07/01/2021 07:55

It's the responsibility of the republicans to clean up their act

mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 07:59

I disagree, @Icanseegreenshoots.

There is something fundamentally wrong with all those angry white men we saw today, and the women who were with them.

Their anger does not stem from a feeling of not being listened to. They are 'seriously aggrieved' because some women and some black people now have power in America, real power.

They do not want a unified country. They want 'their' country back, that is to say, the country where women and black people knew their place.

They are fueled by hatred and they have no fellow feeling whatsoever with the US voters who voted for a black President.

inquietant · 07/01/2021 08:00

I'm not surprised but it is still incredibly shocking to watch. I always feel it is better when true colours are shown though.

RedToothBrush · 07/01/2021 08:00

@BabyLlamaZen

I don't understand how they all got in. Lack of security? You'd think more would be shot. Trump controls everything and it's so creepy.
The police opened the gates to let them in.
mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 08:01

the country where women and black people knew their place... and the police could abuse black people at will with nobody filming them and no public outrage.
