I've just seen Nancy Pelosi speak. I think she looks very shaken which isn't surprising for a 70 year old who has just been shut in a bunker during a seige.

I am so angry on behalf of all the innocent bystanders - not just the politicians and their security people, but what about the admin/catering etc staff who don't get paid enough to put up with this shit Hmm

lionheart · 07/01/2021 02:52

@Jason118

Because he's a fucking lunatic
^ Yep.
allthewaterinthetap · 07/01/2021 02:55

Nancy Pelosi is 80, even. How awful for her to suffer this.

'Washington (CNN)After violent pro-Trump protesters stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday, a growing number of Republican leaders and Cabinet officials told CNN that they believe Donald Trump should be removed from office before January 20. Four of them called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked, and two others said the President should be impeached.'

Mattis says Capitol assault was "fomented by Mr. Trump"

Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the assault on the Capitol was "fomented by Mr. Trump," writing that "his use of the Presidency to destroy trust in our election and to poison our respect for fellow citizens has been enabled by pseudo political leaders whose names will live in infamy as profiles in cowardice."

"Our Constitution and our Republic will overcome this stain and We the People will come together again in our never-ending effort to form a more perfect Union, while Mr. Trump will deservedly be left a man without a country," Mattis added.

On the CBS website:
www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/dc-protests-trump-supporters-clash-washington-capitol-police-live-updates/

There is talk of invoking the 25th Amendment, and also suggestions of censure and of impeachment.

The great advantage of a successful impeachment is that an impeached President may not run for office again. Impeachment procedures can continue after the term of office has ended.

TurquoiseBaubles · 07/01/2021 02:58

Gawd, 80 Shock. She's bloody good for 80, even if shook poor woman.

I can't believe this Lyndsey Graham speech. I'm almost impressed.

mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 02:59

Lindsey Graham, sit down you hypocrite.

TheClaws · 07/01/2021 02:59

I knew this would happen 24 threads ago Confused Saddening to see.

Wackadoo · 07/01/2021 03:00

Please do correct me if I'm wrong, but Pence's speech only referred to the mob as "vandals" and made no association with Trump. That sort of minimisation really worries me and makes me think Pence won't support any invocation of the 25th Amendment.

TurquoiseBaubles · 07/01/2021 03:01

This looks like it might be unanimous, in which case surely they won't object to any other states and this might be all over soon.

I missed what Cruz said.

mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 03:01

Roll now being called in the Senate. Some very emphatic 'No!' responses to what is essentially the question of whether the objection to certification should be entertained.

FUBARandSNAFU · 07/01/2021 03:02
@FUBARandSNAFU - just had to say that your username couldn’t be any more appropriate right now!
Thanks! I was hoping it would only apply to 2020, but unfortunately...

Apileofballyhoo · 07/01/2021 03:03

@mathanxiety

Lindsey Graham, sit down you hypocrite.
He's such a snake.
mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 03:03

NY to send 1000 National Guard troops to DC for up to two weeks.

Apileofballyhoo · 07/01/2021 03:04

He'd get to be president for two weeks though.
lionheart · 07/01/2021 03:08

Kyle Griffin (MSNBC)
@kylegriffin1

'Breaking: 17 House Judiciary Democrats are calling on Mike Pence to use the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.'

AcrossthePond55 · 07/01/2021 03:08

@minou123

OK, im watching the BBC and there is "rumours" of invoking the 25th amendment and removing Trump.

AcrossthePond55 - have you heard this?

I've heard it from various sources. But almost all of them discount it. But at the same time pointing out that Pence seems to be running the show 🤷🏼‍♀️
mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 03:11
 • On a point from earlier, the reason not to use the name of the 'President' being addressed is that the office and the person are not the same. The office is the entity being addressed. This form of address has the same function as 'My Lord' in a British court. It puts the institution above any individual people who may occupy offices within it.
Furries · 07/01/2021 03:12

Am shocked that 6 still voted yes. Was difficult to hear who they were.

Kissthepastrychef · 07/01/2021 03:12

I don't have a great understanding of US politics, better than it was because of this election saga. But I really just can't believe what I'm reading tonight. That this can be happening in the supposed cradle of democracy. I thought months ago that it wouldn't take much for America to descend into chaos and the thought of a civil war that would have been ridiculous in august doesn't look quite so barmy now.

I can't really believe I am witnessing this history being made

AcrossthePond55 · 07/01/2021 03:13

Roll call vote had been taken and the injection has not not been sustained in the Senate.

McConnell just said that the House vote will take place around 11.30 pm EST.

It's gonna be a long night!

TurquoiseBaubles · 07/01/2021 03:13

The 25th has to be carried by 2/3rds of house and senate.

I doubt if 1/3rd of Republican Senate/House members would have the guts to vote for it, so it's probably a waste of time. I suspect Pence has been running the country for a while and will just continue to do so. What he doesn't want to do now is rock any more boats and hinder his 2024 campaign.

Kissthepastrychef · 07/01/2021 03:13

I mean totally genuinely, is this how a civil war begins ?

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/01/2021 03:14

Dan Rather on FB an hour ago, for those of you in the US:

"A word of notice. I will be on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this evening to talk about today's unprecedented moment in American history."

I wish I could see this, but am far away in another country.

Who are these people who are equating the police-dominated peaceful BLM protests with Trump's incitement of insurrection and coup attempt?

TurquoiseBaubles · 07/01/2021 03:15

So 6 fecking eejits voted for it. Who the fuck do they think they are and what are they hoping to achieve? Will they insist on objecting to every state? What a waste of everyone's time.

They must all be so tired after such a terrible day.
