I just wondered because Pence taking over and knifing Trump would redeem him with the GOP and possibly save his career, enabling his alignment with Trump to be minimised as "Pence doing the right thing when it came down to it".

Loads of senior Republicans, including former Presidents, have gone on the record with public statements of dismay, placing the blame on Trump's incitement of this mob.
