To cringe when people over describe their food?

Lighthearted Grin

“What did you have for lunch?”

“Oh I had soft scrambled eggs on crusty bakery sourdough, topped off with sun blushed vine tomatoes and a sprinkling of cracked black pepper”

So you had egg and tomato on toast then Grin.

I get the similar cringe when people describe having toast with “lashings of butter” Envy or a cake with “oodles of cream”.

Anyone else? Grin
@BooFuckingHoo2 but some people like scrambled eggs soft, and some people like scrambled eggs done considerably more than that.

H cooks scrambled egg (very gently slowly), serves himself and then stirs it a bit more before serving mine. And he still manages to serve me egg which I consider barely edible. I have to actively refrain from comparing his to vomit (full disclosure - I can't face carbonara).

I suspect H's preference would be described as "softly scrambled", what he gives me as "lightly scrambled" and mine as "confounded within an inch of its life" Grin
Quite agree. 'Soft' scrambled eggs is a definite thing. 'Softly' is not.

Also people 'frying things off' gives me rage - 'I'm just going to dry these onions off'. Fry them off what?? A cliff???

AtleastitsnotMonday · 06/01/2021 21:33

This reminds me of a colleague who, every day, insisted on describing her sandwich as being made from home made crusty bread. However, every single day she would leave the crusts!

Ditto. James Martin always adds an extra preposition. (Petty I know) but it makes me shudder. Example: I'm just going to "sugar this UP" or "butter this UP". Please drop the extra word!

Imissmoominmama · 06/01/2021 21:35

Yummy scrummy for my tummy!

Fry something off means fry it quickly. It's a term. Like sweating the onions
BooFuckingHoo2 · 06/01/2021 21:36

Yes to PP who said “and all the trimmings”. People have such different view on roast accompaniments, you’re going to have to specify!

Can't be arsed thinking or talking about food any more than absolutely necessary, tbh. I find food an incredibly boring topic.

Here's one - "mouthfeel". Disgusting!

Lemmeout · 06/01/2021 23:49

It’s food porn

YouokHun · 07/01/2021 00:01

@Shelag, “mouthfeel” sounds like some special service you’d have to pay a lot of money for🤢.

And you can guarantee that at least one ingredient in every course will be foam that reminds me, have pretentious restaurants stopped the sauce skid mark trend? I remember going to a very expensive hotel restaurant with my DD when she was a few weeks old (unwise), changing her nappy before going in and then being confronted with exactly the same formation on the bone China as I had just dealt with.

Any discussion on MN about Christmas breakfasts and some fucker always treats us to description of their perfect whacky family 'munching' or 'grazing' or 'chomping' on selection boxes. Just eat the finger of fudge ffs.

TheSoapyFrog · 07/01/2021 00:13

"And some bread to mop it up with" makes me feel weird.
Someone on MN said they were going to spend Christmas morning with a "freshly poured glass of bucks fizz (I think)" and it's been troubling me since.

Picky bits
JamieLeesCurtains · 07/01/2021 00:16

Oh yes, @TheSoapyFrog, that's a disconcerting portmanteau middle-ground of 'not freshly squeezed as such' and 'I don't actually swing it out of a bottle'.

allthewaterinthetap · 07/01/2021 00:17

Scrumptious Xmas Envy

Haha I don't mind that much but I hate:

'All the trimmings' and 'Lashings of' too!

dancinfeet · 07/01/2021 01:59

Someone I know always adds a random Eeek! to her OTT descriptions (which usually are on FB).

Eeeek! Girlie night in with my bestie treating ourselves to a home cooked roast with lashings of mash and my most favourite ever gravy. Thank you mumma for making us your home made yorkie puds and dropping them round- a roast dinner just isnt the same without them. Eeek! I can't wait until it's all ready!! #bffsroastdinnerday #girlienightin #mashngravy #mummasyorkshirepuds

We get the same excited Eeek for every feckin FB announcement. Makes me think of a pissed off parrot.

Chestnut23 · 07/01/2021 02:51

When people finish off their description with an Homer Simpson style drool.

Cameleongirl · 07/01/2021 02:57

My SIL takes photos of all her meals when she’s on holiday. Not just special or unusual cuisine, ALL her meals. Then shares these photos with her family...what are we supposed to say, yummy? 😴 zzzz.
