To cringe when people over describe their food?

Lighthearted Grin

“What did you have for lunch?”

“Oh I had soft scrambled eggs on crusty bakery sourdough, topped off with sun blushed vine tomatoes and a sprinkling of cracked black pepper”

So you had egg and tomato on toast then Grin.

I get the similar cringe when people describe having toast with “lashings of butter” Envy or a cake with “oodles of cream”.

Anyone else? Grin

Anyone watched Food Network? One lady always says, So gooood after trying her food.

ThinkIveFoundYourMarbles · 06/01/2021 19:19

As long as it isn't then "washed down" with (insert drink). 🤢

Ninkanink · 06/01/2021 19:30

I’m unashamedly a foodie. That’s not an affectation at all, it’s just an accurate description. I remember someone on a thread a while back stating quite seriously that those of us who served things like blinis and smoked salmon at buffets were pretentious, aspirational & trying to be posh and no one actually just likes eating them. As if they were wildly unusual foods Confused Hmm I guess there are various camps when it comes to food, as with everything else...

Anyway, I balance it out by being a big fan of McDonald’s, KFC takeaway pizza (although I much prefer a proper Italian) and just about all foods known to man, ‘posh’ or not.

YouokHun · 06/01/2021 19:31

Should we just describe every meal so it sounds as basic and shit as possible then ? Like when people go, oh yeah I just launch it in the oven/bung it in the blender etc

That last part sounds a bit Jaunty Essex based celeb chef to me.

Carolofthebellies · 06/01/2021 19:38

I like modest description not the erotic one. Nouns need adjectives. I am also don't see anything wrong with "home-made". What's wrong with it? Obviously you can make food from scratch or using a ready mix. I wouldn't call a ready-mix as home-made really.

Kindlethefourth · 06/01/2021 19:41

I always think food reviews in the local free newspaper are written like this which makes you appreciate a great food writer more.

Ninkanink · 06/01/2021 19:45

I’m hungry now 😔😔

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 06/01/2021 19:53

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

Not quite as bad as those pretentious menus where you get a whole paragraph about how whatever it was, was gathered at dawn by vestal virgins, hand washed in mountain dew , lovingly hand-cut into alumettes....etc.

But presumably that’s where they get it from. Purple Foodie Prose.,

Still infinitely better than menus in very posh places that just list base ingredients with no hint as to what's been done to them. E.g.

Sprout. Malt. Coffee.
Beef. Egg. Cat.
Lavender. Absinthe. Tobacco.

PlantPotPat · 06/01/2021 19:59

@JesusInTheCabbageVan yes Grin!!! I specifically came on to say that the other extreme is so fucking annoying

user1471565182 · 06/01/2021 20:01

I think most people into food like that ninkanink. I like to ponce out when I can but I enjoy the taste of pretty much any food you can serve up to me.

user1471565182 · 06/01/2021 20:02

I often forget how nice just anything home made can be as well when ive been living off tasteless supermarket sandwiches and stuff as well.

partyatthepalace · 06/01/2021 20:06

My massive hate is the word sourced - as apposed the reality that you bought it, at Tesco.

I like a good good writer though, the bad ones however...

Dee1975 · 06/01/2021 20:09

I had expertly oven baked sausage tonight, which was lovingly cut into quarters, tossed through delicately cut tomatoes which were imported in a tin from Italy then folded in some pasta, added shavings of cheddar with sprinkles of pepper ..

BooFuckingHoo2 · 06/01/2021 20:10

I’m unashamedly a foodie what actually is a foodie though? 🤔

And you can guarantee that at least one ingredient in every course will be foam Grin

BooFuckingHoo2 · 06/01/2021 20:10

@JesusInTheCabbageVan I was about to say in the really posh places they go to the other extreme 😂

A greedy bugger who eats slowly (speaking as a self proclaimed foodie).
midnightstar66 · 06/01/2021 20:13

I blame M&S!

Blubbergalore · 06/01/2021 20:35

Yum, yummy, scrummy just awful, but I cannot stand “delish!”

FutureDuchessofHastings · 06/01/2021 20:51

Some descriptions I've seen are just absurd. It is so off putting to most people.
In response to the PP asking if all food should be made to sound as shit as possible, there are some wanky places that just present you with a list with just one word and one number and call it a menu, so:

Steak 17
Spuds 5
Pie 16

Usually served up in a welly or an old lamp.

I think they think it makes them appear 'edgy'. They often like to invite their diners to sit on overturned beer crates at wonky scaffolding board 'bars' and have exposed copper pipework everywhere too. It's not for me.

Pythone · 06/01/2021 20:52

You would think so, but actually I think a lot of people really aren’t. There are lot of people who aren’t particularly adventurous in culinary terms or don’t appreciate a wide range of food, in which case I wouldn’t say they’re a foodie...

Not that it matters! People are free to like what they like, or not.

See what Jesus said (Thank you, Lord).
ghostyslovesheets · 06/01/2021 20:55

Can we make an exception for Sean Pertwee please because that man makes describing food a filthy work of art

OhBollocksToIt · 06/01/2021 21:13

‘Lashings of butter’ really irritates me. I don’t know why but I hate it.

I also hate the phrase ‘and all that trimmings’. Like the fact that you’re making roast potatoes is somehow special.
